I got to see Cat Stevens twice in concert in 1971 (in a small venue) and 1972 (in a much larger venue). He was amazing both times. Fond memories. I had 4 of his albums that I wore out enough to have to buy a second copy of a couple of them. I love his music to this day.

The subject of the song is Patti D'Arbanville, an American model/actress who spent some time in the UK in her teenage years. During this time, Cat and she were a couple. She is also the subect of Cat's song, "Wild World." They both moved on to other relationships. Patti was Don Johnson's partner for most of the '80s. Cat had a transatlantic fling with Carly Simon which ended when she declined his marriage proposal.

The song also seems to have been inspired by the novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. A classic romantic novel set and written in Victorian England. At the end her true love is reunited with her for a short interlude which ends in a travesty of justice. She is hung - dead. This song perfectly fits as an epilogue as her lover/husband mourns her.

@@brandonious7732 Yeah, she dumped Cat for Mick. But they already had issues in their relationship since she spent a lot of time in New York on modeling assignments, months at a time. She became involved with the whole Andy Warhol scene -- that inspired Cat's take in "Wild World."

The song is written in the form of a Madrigal, and a Madrigal is both a type of song, and a dance. Most of the guitar work in this song is from Welsh guitarist Alun Davies. It was one of the first songs the two did together, after Davies was brought in as a session musician. Stevens and Davies formed a partnership through most of his career, and Cat invited Alun to perform again when he returned to music.

I always found this song to be so beautiful, yet always thought the lyrics to
    be unsettling.
The instruments become so upbeat as the lyrics display, the ending of her life, or the dissolving of their relationship.
When Patti D'arbandville heard this tune she knew their relationship was over. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Brandon. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

They had already broken up and he played it to her over the phone to see what she thought. It’s in an old interview somewhere. She moved back to US to do films and he was in London recording. It’s like an old bard with some kind of Spanish influence and melancholy

The whole album is great. So is the album "Teaser & The Firecat". He has had so many great songs in his career such as "Matthew & Son", "The First Cut Is The Deepest", "Father & Son", "Wild World", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train", "Morning Has Broken" etc. He is still recording & performing live & his voice still sounds great.

Cat Stevens was one of Britain's premier solo singer songwriters and an incredible talent. North America seemed to really corner the market with this type of artist with the likes of artists like Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Carole King, James Taylor, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen etc. but we had our great ones too like CS, Bowie, Gabriel, Sting, Elton John.

I've seen her in several movies, the muse Cat Stevens speaks of. She was married to Don Johnson at a period early in their lives, not sure if it was before or after Melanie Griffith. I'd say he was lucky, but so was I. As many of us are. Being an Air Force kid, far too many were broken at a terrible time. Others probably better that way. Music is the only thing that even came close to my obsession with cheerleaders & gymnasts. Or spinners as I call them, w/o ever saying who. I wouldn't expose anything that shared life & love with me. Many even with me being shipped off to Spain 3 months before turning 17, given more than 32 day's notice, I probably wouldn't have gone. I'd have missed so very much. Getting hired as lead singer & sharing Lead & rhythm guitar with the only Spanish guy in the band. All the rest were 10 years my Sr, but I was the only one who'd studied music theory. So within a month I was learning the new Top 40, teaching them songs I knew & wrote as well writing 3 & 4 part harmonies. Talent & head wise, I wish the band had been Stateside. Most of the others either had at least one anchor, or stricken with what Steven Tyler correctly named LSD. Lead singer disorder Lol! Love the channel, when medical bills aren't draining me dry, I'll take you through the best artists in rock, soul, Southern rock, soft rock to Glen Campbell. Who as part of the Wrecking crew was in 1966 alone was on over 650 Capital hits. Later, Ric C

@HarriBest Reactions This is one of my favorite Cat Stevens Song Yet, .....Do you the story behind Cat Stevens Lady D'Arbanville???? Its about the relationship between Cat Stevens & Patti D'Arbanville here is a quote from her Wikipedia page.
"In an interview with Warhol, she said wistfully that she had heard the song "Lady D'Arbanville": Stevens wrote that song "Lady D'Arbanville" when I left for New York. I left for a month, it wasn't the end of the world was it? But he wrote this whole song about "Lady D'Arbanville, why do you sleep so still." It's about me dead."
This is what I remember from that time...
She hadn't died, but she was a professional model and had to go to New York for a month for work, he apparently didn't want her to go, but her career was important to her and she went anyway and he felt abandoned and he grieved her absence . I cannot remember why he didn't go with her. But, shortly after she left he wrote recorded and released Lady D'Arbanville, and it seriously creeped her out because she was only going to be in the United States for a single month, but apparently a song about her death when she was young, alive, and well disturbed her so much so she ended the relationship. According to some gossip rags at the time she ended the relationship by having an affair with Mick Jagger, I know how accurate that is yet, I do remember that Mick & Patti did see each other for a while. Does that satisfy your curiosity? if it doesn't, and you want more just Google the relationship between Patricia "Patti" D'Arbanville & Cat Stevens, or even her and Jagger. I enjoyed your reaction very much.✌💖🙏
