It probably would have if it was the original motor that came on this 💩 Axminster lathe. But that gave up after a year of bowl turning so I replaced it with a much more powerful and well built motor. 👍🏻 He needs a scarf… we can’t have him getting cold can we 😉😉
I really was wondering where you were going with that, it was only when you started with the details that it all came together! Great work, thanks for the smiles!
Great job. I’ve turned loads of snowmen, but nothing to this scale. Not even sure o want to turn one that size. Fun to watch though. Thanks for sharing.
@@JackMackWoodturning Making the poor thing turn half a tree, you said yourself you thought you had maxed it out when you made that four part vase, and yet here you are turning something even bigger. On a slightly serious note i do have a trunk of a cherry tree about 600mm dia, and would love to turn something large with it but am worried about damaging my lathe, did you just chuck it on there and go for it or is there some sort of formula
I don’t think so.. the bearings and motor that this lathe came with couldn’t handle a log half this size. The body is a lathe sold by Axminster but I have modified it drastically. It took very little to kill the original motor around 1 year of full time bowl turning and the bearings were shot in less than 18 months from new. That is the reality of lathes sold by Axminster. Or any of their branded machines for that matter.
Well, it's definitely working for you, your stuff comes out looking great! Except, imo, the banksia. You didn't do a bad job, that stuff just gives me the creeps 🤣
I’m not really sure what to say Jack! I thought I had done well turning a 200mm snowman. Mrs Rose thinks you are incredible. Have a great Christmas and thank you so much for sharing your expertise.
Hello again Jack. Wow wow wow I’m in awe. From the back yard with the chain saw to the crane then the tomahawk.once again wow wow wow. I love the way you polished the nose with the sawdust. He’s highly dignified. Best snowman ever. He’ll last a lifetime. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Blessings for you to . Great job 👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎
4:30 ... that's a feat in itself - nice, perfectly round log. Ikea sells those for $400 each lol. Nice work Jack, loved watching the curls fly. Thanks for sharing.
You know when you need a hoist to put a bit of wood on a lathe you're going to have fun ... I can imagine the trepidation when starting the lathe for the first time ... excellent 👍
Unbelievable!👍 I couldn't imagine what you were making until the black buttons then it hit me AWESOME DUDE!!!👍 From the shop at Happy Wood Turnings Ducklake Maine!
I often wonder if you’ve got a pack of gerbils or bunnies or SOMETHING to use up all those wood shavings! This one was amazing, that’s a wonderful piece.
That's really cute! The details especially made me smile- loved the carrot polishing. Going to make a turned ornament display? Could do the main parts of a Christmas tree, angel, candle (or angel holding a candle, maybe). Maybe even a 'stained glass' resin star inside a log section, like those cookies made with crushed hard candies? Just daydreaming...
@@JackMackWoodturning I'm going to cook up one of my famous turkey dinners with all the trimmings this year instead of the usual ham. Cooking fer three this time. Reminds when friend made his chess pieces out of birch and oak. When playing with 'em, you really didn't need to go gym in that week. Since oak queen weighed about 40-50kg, birch queen weighed 5 kg less
That must be the most ridiculously heavy Christmas decoration ever! When I still didn’t know what you were making and you started to make his nose I started thinking why is he making a spike?does he have a vampire to vanquish, lol.
Oh how wonderful. Keep him by the workshop all year and dress him in different seasons. He is magnificent Jack :)

Great ideal!
Put a big smile on my face, well done Jack!
Thanks D. Did it get you in the festive spirit?
Just love that snowman!!
Thanks Rena. Are you a bee?
@@JackMackWoodturning yup. I’m sweet as honey. Lol

Frosty!!! He would make a grand greeter to visitors to your shop!!!
Haha! Not a bad plan 😊👍🏻
Frosty the sculpture
was a jolly sort of dude,
with a body made of finest beech
and a nose made out of yew!
holy crap! That is a beast. Turning at 170 tells quite a story. I can't believe the log stayed so well suspended between centers!
Same here 🤣 it was almost a tonne. I have a new lathe coming so had a back up if the bearings went. Surprised she held up.
I appreciate that you showed the whole process of how you even got that log in place
Glad you enjoyed it M. It was very heavy. 🤣
So cute glad you use lifts to help you
I live where there's no snow. This gives me a great idea to make one of my own. Very cool!
You should! Let me know if you do!
I love it all, but the orange finish for the nose is a genius touch.
That’s just orange wood 🤙🏻
The scarf was a nice touch. When you pushed the button to start your lathe, I was surprised that you didn't burn out the motor.

As you started painting I realized what it was. Nice!
As soon as I seen him turn the nose I knew it was a frosty !!
Brilliant snowman ☃️ ⛄️ 🎅🎄🎁❤

Amazing snowman Jack,
Nice one Jack. How’s it going?
Brilliant job as usual Jack, but i do have certain sympathy for your poor old lathe

What did you do to upgrade the lathe? What size motor and is it direct drive or belt driven? Just curious, because that is truly amazing.
Very cheery, love it.

Happy Holidays to you buddy. Live Long and Prosper

Good job mister Jack well done

I absolutely love this guy! He’s sooo cute ☺️
Me?
Of course! ☺️
Question: How far do you actually plan out your projects? Do you go in with a general idea and wing it, or plan it out to the last detail?
Neither.. I always have a plan but never down to the last detail.

Love the long ribbons you were getting with that big roughing gouge….great job!
