Everything you need to know about Sapporo, Hokkaido Japan. We visited Hokkaido during winter, beginning Feb 2023, with heavy snow days and average temperature from -12C to highest was 5C. What should I prepare for winter in Hokkaido? Layer yourself with thermal clothing, waterproof warm jacket (snow jacket is very useful), snow waterproof boots (trust us, the road is SO slippery) and warm scarf, gloves and beanies. Even if you don't go skiing or snowboarding (like us), bring snow jacket or snow boots as the snow can be really heavy.

00:26 How to get to Sapporo?
1) You can get to Sapporo via shinkansen or bullet train or domestic flight from Tokyo. We decided to take domestic flight because it was cheaper than shinkansen. If you buy the JR Rail Pass then it might be worth the effort to travel via bullet train despite longer travel time.
2) How to get around Sapporo?
We got Hokkaido Rail Pass that cover all JR Hokkaido lines, available for 5D or 7D. You can buy the ticket from Pelago: tinyurl.com/4tc88hrz with discount code: PEL15NAH
You can also hire car rather than public transport, very useful if you travel to other cities.

3) We stayed at Onsen Ryokan Yuen Sapporo because we love onsen! For first time traveler, we suggest to stay around Susukino, Odori, or Sapporo station. There are plenty of restaurants, cafe, bar and accommodation around this area. The best advice to choose hotel/accommodation in Japan is to stay near the train station if you are not driving.

4) Hokkaido ramen in Sapporo that you need to try is Ebisoba Ichigen - miso ramen with pork and prawn broth, super delicious.

6) This is quite different with other Japanese curry but more toned down or watery curry with lots of vegetables. We tried Suage+ famous Sapporo restaurant for soup curry

7) which is like Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory of Japan
We thoroughly enjoy this chocolate / cookie theme park as we learnt a lot from the history, process, behind the scenes while still having fun in this mini themepark.
07:50 Sapporo Beer Museum
8) I mean when you are in the birthplace of Sapporo beer, of course you need to drink Sapporo Beer! This is one of the most famous tourist attraction in Sapporo which you can't miss it

9) or Mongolian style mutton barbecue is another must try food while you are in Hokkaido region. There are many places that does Genghis Khan and we tried Daruma

10) Visit the Sapporo Curb Market in the morning to get the freshest seafood like crab and kaisendon or fresh seafood rice bowl

11) If Sapporo Crab Market is too far, you can visit Nijo Market. Whilst smaller than the wholesale market, it is closer to the city center
13:03 Sapporo Snow Festival
12) Iconic yearly event in Sapporo where people around the world will gather to see the finest Japanese craftsmanship of ice and snow sculpture displayed in Odori Park. Check the website as the dates are always different every year
14:16 Sapporo TV Tower

Great video guys! Would recommend to anyone, if you're travelling in winter, to pick a hotel close to an underground entrance near Sapporo, Odori or Susukino station. There's a huge underground tunnel which makes getting around easier when it's snowing. Otherwise you're going to be humbled when dragging your luggage through snow.

Yeah, it wasnt too bad - most places around there do have english speaking vendor - otherwise you can always use google translate app and just show them what you want

Special ones with grip - i bought mine In Tokyo few days before our trip to sapporo which was early February and it was slippery still - so better be prepared if you are going end of jan / early feb
