You as an ex Brit should know what happens to salty covered vehicles. Hehe Nice to see your aussification is almost complete.
Well done Ross… looks like fun. I had not taken my Ute onto the beach. Dry bush tracks only. As mentioned by others, be sure to give the Ute a good wash, as required for any vehicle taken into a salty environment.
Cheers for the video mate. I just picked up a Cannon a few weeks ago and wanted to do Bribie for Christmas, but I was a bit worried about its capabilities on the sand. Question answered at the spot we wanted to go. Might have to pick up that pass.

I'm sure you have had so many tips of what to do and what not to do. You must have done most of it right, didn't get yourself bogged. But, sometimes getting bogged is a bit of fun and you do learn lots from it. One question if you read this, what pressures did you drop your tyres down to? There are so many great videos on UA-cam about all different types of 4 wheel driving, what type of equipment you need, but I'm sure you have been checking them out. I bet a lot of your friends give you a hard time having a GWM, I get the same, I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but don't you love driving pass the bogged Landcruisers.
I;m glad you had a great day out. FJI. There is another access road to the beach from which you can exit as well. It's all the way down the the south of the island. I always used to use this access. Perhaps they have close it off, IDK. The nice thing about this end of the beach is that there are fewer people there and no waves making it great for families with toddlers to swim! Good luck with your car.
Love it. Its great on the beach and a BBQ to boot. Just a few tips (like you don't have enough already). Always go with friends. take your recovery gear with you, buys some all-terrain tyres and don't forget to air them down. Finally keep your momentum as best you can and things should go alright for the easy beach stuff. Cheers.
Well done for a first effort. A smart move now would be to get some lessons in how to drive a 4WD properly. Books and mates can only teach you so much. Back in the day, when I worked up in the Snowy Mountains, we regarded most 4WDs as an accident waiting to happen. Some of the drivers would do the stupidest things, thinking that they would be alright, just because they were in a 4WD. But again, well done on your first effort.
We did it last week at inskip point best day ever and my brother in law has the 7 seat version of yours. No issues at all just dropped the tyres to 14psi and no issues 😊
let your tyres down right and you’ll be fine, try not to brake too hard on sand, reverse a bit before you pull off, you’re in auto so that makes it a lot easier for just driving on sand but if you want to go over dunes choose your gear
I own a Cannon X with 30000kms. I have always been a supporter of the brand until now. I went to the dealer Autostrada in Western Australia, for a service and had them look at a minor warranty issue for a delaminating park brake button, along with recalling for the headrests to be replaced. This work was booked in over a month prior to the service date. It’s been over a year and when going to book my 30000kms service I enquired again as the the park brake and it turn out that even though the dealer told me it was warranty and would be replaced they had not even ordered the part and not submitted a warranty claim to GWM/HAVAL. Not only this they did not replace the recall item on the headrests. When I approached GWM/HAVAL HQ I was told it’s my problem and they have nothing to do with it. So basically, your on your own. Ok so you might think this is a dealer/service department issue but can you imagine if this was a larger warranty issue and this was the support you expect to receive. I was going to look at a new vehicle next year and I can be sure GWM/HAVAL are off the list. Warranty support is critical to me and this seals the deal. Thanks for no support GWM/HAVAL, if warranty is important to you seriously consider other brands, as GWM/HAVAL do not provide customer support.
Thanks for the tip. I'll look out for those same issues. Unfortunately for you, let's hope it's just the dealer and not a wider issue for everyone else. Maybe try another dealership?
Yeah ppl get really hung up on the land cruiser/hilux/pajero thing. My dads old Kia Sorrento (back when they did them 4wd) went so many places that thing was bashed to shit over the 15 years he had it. Did have issues with sand getting into the timing chain when beach driving (happened twice) but Dad worked out the issue and was able to fix it. That thing drove Perth the Alice and back, did a few of the more well known 4wd trips around Perth as well as a lot of 4wd club events. Driving technique, knowing what to do and how to place your vehicle will get you through most places. I'm assuming Brisvagas is the same as Perth, but next time there is a 4wd show on (aka vendors set up booths and sell you stuff) a lot of the 4wd clubs will also have booths to try and sign up members. Joining a club can be a good way to meet more new people who have a similar interest and have support along the way. I'd probably recommend trying some of the smaller shows first because you might get more of the smaller clubs that are less focused on being car brand specific. It can be difficult to find a club that isn't just ppl wanting to f* shit up or people who just solve every issue by throwing more money at more expensive gear to get them out of tight spots. Some will also run camping trips as well as just day trips which can be a fun way to see places and some are more welcoming of people with kids than others. Shop around, don't be surprised about the politics (it's wild what can go on sometimes) but you get out what you put in too.
Mate the Ute looks great and good to see you having fun with it. I’m looking at one too and noticed you have a car seat in the middle - they don’t come with an anchor point in the middle - did you get one put in? If so how’d you go about it?
Just started the video - not sure if the big question is if the car can cope driving on the beach or if the big question is can YOU cope driving on the beach - guess I will get to find out!
G'day, Go with some friends and learn how to do various recovery techniques. That way you know your limits and what to do to get others out of a tight spot.
Hey mate I was just wondering about where you got the nudge bar with the spotlights for your car. I’ve been looking for something exactly like that for my cannon and I just can’t seem to find anything.
Update on dealer. I moved to a new dealer in Melville. Autostrada were just really bad at their role. I found the new dealers service and care much much better. I still found GWM's response to my concerns less than expected, but from what I understand most manufacturers are poor in the warranty space. This seems to be an industry wide issue and will only change if there is much more customer pressure to do so. All in all I'm still happy with the vehicle of course, and any negative I have reported has nothing to do with the current operation of the Cannon X

Oh, it's on its 5th clutch, 3rd gear box.
Unbreakable bullshit advertising.
Go the GWM experience.
For the record, I purchased a Toyota 76 series, it was the most overrated piece of crap. Sold it off, went back to a underated Jackaroo that was more comfortable & capable than the famed 76 series I brought to replace it with.
Provided a vehicle does what you expect of it, you'll be happy with it.
Again, go the GWM.
Great tips. Thanks Ian
Tyre pressure is everything!! Any 4x4 at 15psi will out perform any 4x4 at 40 psi.
Great advice 👍
@@ThatJohnstonLife Watch Inskip point video's on the 40lb club getting bogged
How much is one of those Chinese 4X4s then in $AUD? Thanks
I'll probably never see one of these GWM pickups in the US, the Chinese can't import automobiles here. Looks like fun though!
Hope you lowered your tyre pressure for the sand , Ross?🤔
Of course
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey buddy what air compressor do you use please??
The double one from Kings
@@ThatJohnstonLife thank you just got it. We shall test it out over the weekend!!
will we get it i the uk
Love Bribie Island
It's awesome there 😎
😂Thank you very much for the video, great happiness❤❤❤
Thank you too
What would your advice be for a 17 yr old who wants to make the move in the future?
Get educated
A mate has one and calls it his “Great Wally”
Ha ha. Sounds like a great nickname
Tyre pressures as low as 12 PSI and go with mates... spend hours washing that sand and salt out or that GWM ute will look like a 10 yr old pommie car..... buy anti salt wash and keep washing the chassis, did I mention wash the car ???? Our family group owns 4WDs for Fraser and Noosa North shore for more then 35 years, cant stress enough washing down after .... get the hint? Make sure you carry your own recovery gear, people prefer to break yours and not their own
😆 what brand is this anti salt wash?
Maybe you can upgrade wheels and tyres, a little bit more confidence and your set 👍🏻
That's the plan!
So sad that the Ute industry has gone so overboard on price that china has to step in and sell us this cheap crap that won’t last 5-7 years.
I mean the warranty is seven, but it might not last 8
Toyota stopped the v8 diesel this is an opportunity for gwm to put a v8 diesel in one of these .
*the car did alright, put the others to shame. Must be a nervous drice though haha*
Little bit worrying at times!
Ross well done
Thanks Peter
Any car will cope on the beach if the tyre pressure is adjusted.
Make sure you disengage abs and traction control when driving on Sand
How did those Landcruisers get stuck, more money than brains,a Rav-4 could have driven all that...
Stay tuned guys to see the next adventure of the Chinese ute. 😜😂
Ha ha. Absolutely right!
Borg Warner 4WD system (USA), ZF 8 speed transmission (Germany), Bosch Vehicle Stability and Safety system (Germany), Bosch and Delphi (Germany,USA) engine management system, Borg Warner two stage turbo, Japanese airbags, made from Australian iron ore heated by Australian coal, etc.,etc.. Designed by ex head engineers from WV, Land Rover, BMW, Toyota...manufactured in an Europen built, state of the art, fully robotized factory. So, just exactly how Chinese is this truck/ute?
Just remember if you're stuck with no one around, just keep lowering your pressures.
Until there's no more air left Robert?
@@ThatJohnstonLife
If that's what it takes
2-5psi is a far bigger contract patch than 18psi.
The majority of bogs you see are just tyre pressure.
If you search Tyler Thompson "nearly lost the nav". You see how he got out of bad bog in really soft sand.
And there's the "old" pommie you coming out with that comment - m8 you have NO reason to explain to anyone why you bought that ute - your reason's are your reason's and it's NOT a game of who can afford the best ( we call it competing with the Jones's) just not necessary in Australia.......Congrats on the new ute for you and the family to explore Aus the fun way, in a 4 x 4 ute. So, have you decided on "her" name yet ? it is traditional here to give your car a name. It's normally a female nic name, but can be anything really (I had a Hyundai Sonata who earned the nickname "turtle"). You guys will make great memories in that new ute. Enjoy and I sure hope (insert nic name here) IT gets to explore the beaches again real soon
Thanks Roslyn, you're absolutely right. I'm thinking of going with Wally. What do you think?
@@ThatJohnstonLife If Wally floats your boat, then absolutely - welcome to the Johnston family "Wally" 😄
Get a Mahindra Ross!
No need now
It's a Cannon!!!!!
Boom
Where’s the fishing rods? The only reason to go to the beach!
I need to be more Australian
@@ThatJohnstonLife you’re doing pretty great right now mate!
Gee, What a horrible way to spend the day. HAVING FUN!!!!
Absolutely terrible Kathleen
I love you channel guys and am sub. With respect to today topic and the Chinese vehicles in question, you would do well to follow this Aussie's channel and I'll post this to speed up the decision making process for you: ua-cam.com/video/u1UfDOLk8ic/v-deo.html Go straight to 24:42 and watch his assessment of Atico the importer of LDV's and other Chinese vehicles. Basically the vehicles are NOT built well, yet they are advertised as being tough enough to 'weather' the Aussie conditions/market. Me thinks NOT!
I heard that about LDV too. Just hope GWM is much better. Not heard anything yet
@@ThatJohnstonLife I hope all goes well for you and your family mate! If you ever get to Sydney. Drop me a line here and I'll get in touch and show you all around...👍
GWM is a factory backed outfit in Aus. We have 3 of them now and they are running faultless. I don't know how they are going to do in 15 years but I don't really care. We will keep them for 4-5 (like all our other fleet cars) and sell them with some warranty left.
you drove your chinese ute on sand close to salt watER. brilliant, NOW WATCH IT RUST.
BEFORE you go OFF ROAD> MAKE sure you know how to DRIVE OFF ROAD> or you may KILL some one
Is you car auto or manual? I live in Redcliffe we are always at bribie
