The 2 best sounding were the Super Directional with Noise Cancelling OFF and Super Directional with Noise Cancelling On. Actually it would be nice to play them back to back because it was difficult to compare the 2. I tried using the time bookmarks, but its not as easy to compare.
Super Directional with Noise Cancelling sounded the best to me. I’m always dealing with background noise. I wonder how it compares to the ECM-W2BT Sony Hotshoe Lav mic.
Hi James. The marketing for the XLR-K3M suggests that you can record FOUR channels of audio (two XLR inputs plus one stereo input) into cameras with the updated hotshoe. I would like to know if it is possible to record THREE channels of audio using the ECM-B1M (one from the shotgun plus one stereo using the camera's own 3.5mm input). When you have the ECM-B1M on the hotshoe and - say - a lavaliere plugged into the camera, how many audio channels get recorded? Great videos, by the way.
Hi Daniel - interesting thought. I suspected the digital interface on the A7R IV would take over and not allow the analog signal through - but I just tested it out, and the wireless lav plugged into the mic input on the camera seemed to override the ECM-B1M. Now, I haven't looked into whether there's a special setting on the camera to allow recording to separate channels - nor have I tried to record four channels on the XLR-K3M, so I think there's some testing left to do. But based on what I tried today, I doesn't look like the ECM-B1M and the camera mic input can record in tandem.
@@NeverStark Thanks for going out of your way to test that for me. If this feature were ever implemented, it would be a deal-breaker between these two products. The XLR-K3M looks bulkier, heavier, and - if I ever need XLR inputs - I'll use an external recorder. I shoot everything on a gimbal. It would be much more efficient to have a light, cable-free shotgun as a catch-all sound device with the option to deploy up to two laveliers (one to each stereo channel). But alas, Sony has dashed my dreams of the perfect run-n-gun rig.
@@danielfullwood8759 i was hoping to do the same thing! After alot of research it seems as the K3M records 4ch 24bit audio ok an a7siii, but probably not on any other cameras. You can still record 2ch (shotgun + lav) or 2 lavs with the k3m digitally to the camera though, saving batteries and wires... it would be nice if the other hotshoe compatible alpha cameras would support up to 4ch, but I have a feeling sony kept that feature only for the flagship a7siii

Exceptional comparison work, James.
Good job! I have the ECM-B1M and have been quite happy with it. Great to see you compare it to another Sony mic.
Beautiful focal speaks in the back!
Also thorough comparison, thanks for the video!
Excellent eye, Patrick! Thanks for checking out the video.
This is not just helpful, this is money saving! Thank you.
Really glad to hear that!

That's interesting, I did not know about the noise cancelling on the B1M. I'm also checking see if that mic pics up camera movement sounds.
I actually tested that in another video. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/QYvhEw-wmVk/v-deo.html
Really appreciate your videos. Thank you.
Thank you 🤗

That is lazy of you for not reshooting 😎😎
Still great video😊
Heh, thanks Ramon - and I can't argue with you!
I forgive you for getting the name wrong. Sony has the ugliest names for their products lol.
Truth! Thanks Joshua.
