    This is literally the only video I've found going into great depth about using this XLR K3M. I was concerned it wouldn't be a smart investment because I don't want to deal with having to rewrap audio files in post before using them, but because I edit on Premiere and have the latest version, this video cleared that up for me. I actually am leaning towards purchasing an FX3 and my understanding is that the audio module on that camera functions similarly to the XLR K3M, so now that I have some clarification I feel a lot better moving forward with it. Thanks so much!

      Can you talk on your experience? Thinking on FX3 because of the better XLR, but doesn’t have the EVF like A7S iii. I’ve watched numerous videos on comparing the two, but rarely any talk about the actual XLR. Especially with Shure SM7B, which is why this video was helpful from the A7s iii perspective

      to be honest, I think it sounded better on the a7iii than the a7siii, but I also had a better understanding of my a7iii since I've used it way more. It is a great piece of gear for those looking for the convenience of audio straight to the card.

      Sony has two types of MiShoe, the one in your video and the one on my FDR-AX100E, both named the same but not compatible. This is not documented anywhere. Shame on you Sony.

    Thanks for the helpful vidéo ! Just found out a big problem on the A7S3 audio monitoring (using XLR-K3M with my A7S3). You can't chose which channel you want to monitor UNLESS you record 4 channels of audio (which is basically useless because not supported by NLE software). So if you're recording only two channels of audio (CH1/CH2), you CANT decide to monitor only CH1 or only CH2 in headphones. That sucks big time.

    Great Video. If you had the previous models K1M or K2M could you test on the a7Siii as most operators may own those previous models. Because of a7Siii wanting a digital signal, a test with previous models would be an interesting and informative video to see if they are even compatible with a7Siii. Thanks.

    I think a (magnetic) shielded USB cable could help to eliminate the interference. Is the quality of this module at a level that the audio quality is on thr the same level as the audio recorded with the FX6? That's an important question to answer before making a decision.. Besides this you are right that a cold shoe would be very handy for a lav receiver.

      Oh this is a reason I purchase the A7SIII. To get 4 channels otherwise, need a $$$ cinema camera. Do not want to add encumbrances of off-camera recording, in the field. 240 fps slo mo is also useful to my work. I've used an older version of the XLR adapter on a Sony camcorder for 10 years, its worked well. Does have a cold shoe on top.

    Panasonic has a similar XLR adapter, but also has a cold shoe mount... And it's $200 cheaper. Most people looking to buy something like this will already have XLR mics so it was beyond stupid to make it so you can only buy the adapter with an inferior mic.

    Great news! I have used the xlr-k2m extensively and had massive problems with the hot shoe connection. Its not very robust if you use it on a daily basis, so I switched to the xlr-k1m, which has an extra cable and mount for the unit so it doesnt put too much strain on the connector and it worked better but still I had some connection issues after a few months. I am not sure if the digital connection will work better. Right now I am sing a sound bag and record audio externally but its quite heavy, so I would be glad to switch back. Another problem was the mic mount which wasnt very shock absorbant. I had a lot of noise walking around, so I had to add a rycote shock mount and everything got a litte heavy and cluncy. I am afraid tha mic mount didnt change at all, so I am not sure if this is a great solution for documentary work..

    Nice review and those additional channels are a serious upgrade! I've been using the XLR-K2M for the last 4,5 years and it always worked nicely. It also doesn't come with a coldshoe mount on top but I think they did this on purpose. When I attach a wireless receiver like the AVX system directly into the XLR-K2M I sometimes get interference. Just to be safe I always use a XLR cable to move the receivers away from the adapter. I'm curious if the same problem would occur with the XLR-K3M because this makes me rig up my a7sii+xlr-k2m combo, which is a bit of a bummer. It would be nice to keep it compact.

  • @The22Century
    @The22Century 3 роки тому +1

    If only Sony XLR-K3M had 3 XLR inputs I'll buy it with no hesitation. But I need a shotgun mic to XLR and 2 LAV's Sanken COS-11D which also have to go to XLR's... for interviews setup. And for that works something like Zoom H6 which could be routed directly into the camera through the line out: all tracks will merge into one and no sync is necessary. But XLR-K3M is "more native" to Sony cameras and there is no line out, sound is being recorded directly with a hotshoe mount. Honestly it is sad that after K2M Sony didn't think about that. Who needs 2 XLR and 1 TRS input?? If you go with XLR you stick with it. I'm gonna have to go with Zoom H6 until there is the Sony XLR-K4M :))

    • @JavierMercedes
      @JavierMercedes  3 роки тому +2

      Understandable, One hot tip with the Zoom H6 and using the line out into your sony camera is to PAN your inputs hard left and right in the mixer. If I were in the situation I would split the Lavs to one side and the Boom to the other, that way you have some sort of isolation. You could also still utilize this technique with your h6 going into the stereo input 3 of your k3m, but it would still require an h6 to be handy.

      @The22Century 3 роки тому

      @@JavierMercedes Still thinking. Zoom H6 is great but you have to feed it AA batteries... which I hate to use and they're bad for the environment. Here is a thought, maybe with K3M you could use a shotgun mic to XLR input, one LAV with a Rode VXLR+ adapter to a second XLR input. And lastly, second LAV mic with it's 3.5mm to the 3.5 input. So... is it possible to record 3 audio tracks simultaneously?

    • @The22Century
      @The22Century 3 роки тому

      Got it anyways :) With a Rode NTG5. Just have to get next few things too if you have an XLR mic that you want to use as a camera mic (setup for Sony A series): SmallRig 3008 kit + Rode SM3-R Camera Mount + short XLR-XLR cable + (optional) SmallRig HSN2093. Mount a mic on one handle (right is best) and external monitor on another. As for LAV mics, opted for two Deity w.lav pro's: one goes into 3.5 and another into second XLR input with a help of Rode VXLR adapter. Maybe this will help somebody :)

      I have a slightly different scenario. I want to take stereo out of a mixer via two balanced 1/4 inch cables into the XLR combos on the fx3. Then I will use wireless go II into input 3. That would support both transmitters for either 2 channel, backup padded channel or mixed mono. Having hooked it up yet but will soon

    Does anyone know if this adaptor bypasses the preamp in the camera body?
    When using this adaptor can you go to the menu in the camera and turn the record level all the way to zero and still get an audio signal?
    I use a7iii and want to bypass the camera preamp

    Javier Mercedes I'm trying to use my Sony URX- P03D wireless system with the a7siii. The niShoe Audio Set. menu remains grayed out. Any suggestions or is this wireless system not compatible with the a7siii? FYI, the hot shoe is powering my receiver, just receiving audio in the camera. TIA.

    Good video! Post production convenience aside, how does the k3m compare with the zoom h6 in terms of pure audio quality?

    • @JavierMercedes
      @JavierMercedes  2 роки тому +2

      I use my K3m audio all the time and haven’t used my h6 since buying the k3m for the most part. H6 might have better quality but I haven’t noticed since using the k3m for convenience. Hope that helps!

      this is being recorded directly into quicktime via a camlink, Quicktime is known to drop frames while doing movie recording like this.

    Hey Javier! Sorry for the rookie question: I’m not sure if I understand the whole functionality of the K3M… Is it main that is it an adapter to use XLR/phantom power mics with your Sony camera… Or does it also provide superior preamps and sound procesing?

    • @JavierMercedes
      @JavierMercedes  3 роки тому +1

      Yes to all of those kind of. XLR inputs, Phantom Power, superior preamps, ultimately it saves you time by having the capability to record professional audio directly into the camera so you don’t need to use an external recorder.

    Hi Javier, I’ve been having an issue with my K3M on my A7S III. Might be a very simple error but I can’t seem to figure it out. When I record with my Rode Procaster plugged into either Input 1 or 2, when I play it back I can only hear the sound from the left speaker/headphone. No idea why. Any help would be most appreciated

      Yes you can! I tried to do this as well but I just got electrical noise on the signal, but definitely worth trying it before buying a splitter. It may have been how the electrical is setup in my workplace.

    Zoom h5 external, wouldn’t that be out of sync with video need post clapper board sync. However get this and vid and audio are perfecting in sync and saved on camera sd card as video and audio. Or am i missing something? Is two channels of recording the same as stereo line input though?

    • @JavierMercedes
      @JavierMercedes  3 роки тому +2

      Yes two channels of recording is same as stereo if you use stereo input. This can do up to 4 on the a7siii. You can split the input to two mono if you use the xlr or do stereo. Depending on how far away from the camera you are a clapper would still be needed to have perfect sync.

      @@JavierMercedes Sorry for being so unspecific. I meant using 24bit recordings in editingsoftware. I use Davinci Resolve. Are the files still unusable/ unhearable? Will Sony tell us whether they have fixed te problem? Or do I have to contact Davinci?

    Thanks! So with the a7iii it is only 2 seperate channel recording right? Or is it possible to use the mic input of the a7 iii when the k3m is on top?

  • @dsolproductions
    @dsolproductions 2 роки тому

    Hi! now that you've been using this - can you tell me if this is actually recording separate 4 channels of audio on the physical video file (2 stereo tracks), or if it's simply mixing the 4 channels of audio on the K3M inputs down to 2 channels of audio (a traditional stereo file connected to the video file)? I have an A7Rii btw,. Thanks for your advice! It would be great if I could capture 4 separate audio signals.

    • @JavierMercedes
      @JavierMercedes  2 роки тому +1

      4 separate channels paired to the one video file. Unfortunately you need the digital hot shoe mount on your Sony camera to access this. The A7Rii does not have this, it’s only analog. I think A7R4 and a7siii were the first camera in the alpha line to have the digital shoe mount.
