  • Preventative maintanance....... This is what this build was... Now look whats happened! Ive had to remove the entire rear quarter from this 1984 classic Porsche 911. We just keep finding more and more rust. On the sills, the tub, the inner wheel arches and the kidney bowls.
We stripped the remaining of the underseal and called in The Ice Blasters to give this a once over. The underside is looking fresh!

This PVC undercoating was widely in use with german car manufacturers from the 70ies on. It is great for sure in matter of protecting against stones an other hard stuff being thrown at the body. Bus as soon as it gets porous or cracky, things get terribly wrong as moisture and salty water gets trapped behind and rust is growing in secret, only showing when it is far too late and steel has left the chat.... Most of your projects show this issue in various states... But this keeps your business alive and growing ;-) And we have nice videos showing your great talent in getting all this nastiness perfectly sound again!

I've been seeing it a lot too.
Now you can get a far better version of the anti gravel stuff on a rattle spray cans from cheapo places like Princess Auto/Harbor Freight/Biltema, and probably also the UK equivalent.
I've been testing it (and other stuff) on deliberate botch jobs (personal cars) to see how it works.
Compared to the old PVC stuff it scales off when the steel underneath starts rusting, just enough you can see it, rather than staying on to hide what's going on.

Old underseal often gets a bad rap, but it's done a job on protecting the majority of metal on that 40 year old car.

Great work at usual, it is so refreshing to see you working with PPE...all the young people now have a role model. In fact everyone that works in works shops will take notice...I sold my 1980 911sc, just wondering if it was like this undeath?.. makes me thing twice before buying another old 911.

Weren't these 911's zinc coated to prevent rust in case of undersea failing? Surely stripping sealer with the SCT removes this coating while wire brush will keep some.
How will you be properly coating bare steel back to factory level to keep future rust out?

    • @AMLagonda

The front "repair" is no repair I think, there is a damper installed for the front bumper, so it is a US importes car. I think this was installed due to us regulations and maybe it was not done by porsche but anywhere else 🤷
Anyhows, sorry to use this video for this question but what about Matt`s BMW? Did I miss Something? Will you finally assemble it again?

Hello captain yorkshire I was visiting my brother other day when it came on and we were fixing to watch it and he started having chest pains and we had to take him to the e.r. he took some nitroglycerin and had to take two before he got relief and was able to get to the car but luckily he didn't have a heart attack but it was definitely scary time. The Dr told him to call his cardiologist and do a follow up so he called and they can't get him in till Aug. Hoping everything works out till then. 🙏 tell everyone I said hello 👋 take care buddy.

I thought Porsche had introduced zinc galvanisation of the whole, unpainted body by then, but I guess I’m just wrong about that.
By the time of the 966 generation (my own car) they’re pretty much sound. Not a spec of rust on my 2004 car, thankfully.

The SCT is way too heavy to be using above your head. Also, get the wire drum. It is much better for stripping under seal and is also better for uneven surfaces.

I understand wanting to keep it together as much as possible (not dismantling unless absolutely necessary) however in order to do a full restore surely it would be beneficial just to strip to bare shell and fo from there?
Yeah, stripping it all initially is a time investment but so is having to stop dismantle further and then start repairs again?
Love the videos just trying to understand your thinking man. ❤

The tool I used to remove the underseal also polished removed the rust and polished the metal, hence why you couldnt see the smaller bits of rust on camera

It's interesting that my SC had rust in many of the same places as this Carrera. Overall, the underseal does a pretty good job of protecting the car and it's generally not necessary to remove all of it. But there are a few known trouble spots as you've pointed out (namely the kidney bowls, around the oil tank and strut towers, etc.) The dry ice cleaner did a great job too and saved you a lot of time. Love your work chaps!

  • @rblubb
    @rblubb 3 місяці тому

You're doing a great job, fantastic! But I always wonder when I see how much you're sanding the paint; wouldn't it make sense to completely strip the bodies? For example, with pyrolysis and subsequent dip stripping, the bodies would be like new from the factory and everything would be visible. Or is that just too expensive?

Since the rust goes up inside the interior panels, it might be more expedient to get a cut off from a donor/junked 911. At some point it must be faster and reduce the cost than fabbing the parts.
