The DW certainly has more depth and complexity. However, for someone starting out, or someone who played back in the day and wants to get back into it, id recommend the 400 set all day long, it, actually sounded great.
For sure man
The DW Kit is much better! But I agree ( as I do the same thing) leave the larger expensive kit at home and take out the light weight cheap kit for gigs!
My breakbeats arrived today. Stoked! Love how you got that 16" kick to sound, you're getting some serious thud out of that little guy! Great video!
Thanks bro, enjoy it!
i didn't know ed sheeran can play this well ❤️
Lol
😅 gebleg lu pEa
LOL.
That’s a 13” x 13” floor tom. Not 14
You are correct, thanks for the correction!
I use a red burgundy sparkle Breakbeats kit W / matching snare on my Jazz gig. For Jazz standards the Breakbeats kit works for me. Very easy to fit the entire kit in the trunk of my car. The only modification I used is changing the snare wires to “ Puresound “ 30 strand snares.
Nice yeah man for sure. I’ve literally had my breakbeats kit in my car like the past month or so now Lolol
Use them along with some good hand hammered light cymbals and your good to go. 👍
I have a DW kit for some 22 years and bought a Breakbeats kit about 2+ years ago to have for local gigs and for the simple aspect of a different kit. I love it! With drum head upgrades and good tuning it sounds fantastic and has no lack of punch, and has warm tone. I do prefer double wide snares and that really gave the snare drum some growl and snap. I recorded with it and got great results out of the recording session. The weight and compact size makes for much easier gear load in and set up. I did alter one aspect,...I bought some spacer washers to place in between the kick riser mount so that my kick pedal and beater head had clearance from the hoop. It worked and have never had a problem with that.
Smart on the washers
Wacky. Those Ludwig toms just sound great. Most interestingly, I like how YOU play on the Ludwig kit compared to the DW. You just seem more comfortable and natural on the Ludwig.
You got me! It’s more fun lol.
I think one could get more variety with tuning the breaks….but they are different sizes than the DWs. Very nice drumming thanks
Don't forget one is on a rug and the other on a wood floor. It's like doing a cheap vs expensive guitar ''War'' and using two different amps and two different microphones, makes zero sense to me, but aye, to each his own I guess?
I think here doesn't explained the difference of 3.600 bucks up for the DW cause the sound is similar with not so much difference in tone as Ludwig and the Ludwig kit sounds awesome. All the game played with the mixing and effects so i think the winner here is the Breakbeats , cheap , small for caryying by easy , nice sounding and honest kit .Yeah!!
Let’s put this way, the Ludwig makes me money and the DW takes it away, lol!
You've got that little bass sounding awesome
Mr. Friendly thanks bro
Interesting comparison. With just the camera mic the DW has a bunch of inherent vibrations and resonant sounds that I would spend getting rid of when recording. The Ludwig would probably be ready to record as it is
I def agree. DW rings for days, I have an O Ring but also need to buy more moon gels or try those drum tacks that guys are using
@Bill Perri armory is cool I’m def a Saturn guy though. That’s my gigging kit
The Ludwig would be the better kit for recording if you’re using other samples around it
Most definitely awesome for recording. I’ve tried it. Also they come stock with Remo Pins which sound great for recording. Kind of miss that Pin stripe sound. I changed my tom and floor tom heads out for Remo white coated Ambassadors. . They sound great for the Jazz gig. But I held onto the Pins in case I need em someday. Can’t go wrong with Pin stripes. Especially for Rock.
Both sound great for 400 can’t beat the Luddys but of course sound wise the dubs. Nice video brother 🤘🏻
I was a child drummer and have lived in apartment complexes, which haven’t allowed me to purchase my own drum kit.
I am getting ready to move into my first home while serving in the Air Force.. I am excited to finally get the Ludwig Breakbeat kit! It’ll be the perfect solution for me, and it’s easy to pack up if I have to move to another military base!!
Breakbeats is crazy good!
The DW is way better. Get the muffling off of it and tune it properly and it will go head to head with any kit out there for any price. The Ludwig is a fun kit but very limited in application.
Can you explain the difference of 3.600 bucks of these two kits from what you listen here??
@@Drumsholic Well a good portion of the price difference is due to better wood, better shell construction, better finishes, and better hardware. The rest is because of the DW badge.
@@EricT43 I believe you know clearly that with these money you can buy a great Tama Starclassic birch or maple and an amount of good cymbals so why you will choose DW ??It's not have sense. It's overpriced brand any quality's wood if will use.DW Hardware sucks in compare with Tama or Grestch.
@@Drumsholic Yeah, you can, but Tama Starclassic do not sound as good as DW Collector's. They are very good drums, but not on the same level. Tama Star, yes, those are amazing drums, but they cost even more than DW.
@@EricT43 ok i got it!You're a passionate lover of DW.Ok i agree that has super sounding kits but i'm closer with Tama. Take care buddy, stay safe.
Wish I heard the snare it comes with...
Ain’t much to hear man. I have another vid on just the Ludwig breakbeats, I use the snare in that one, if I’m not mistaken.
I use it for light jazz gigs, that’s about it.
If you were to close your eyes and not know the price difference...the Ludwig sounded way better!!!. Those Toms were awesome sounding. The nicest kits Ive ever played were Ludwig classic Maple and Sleishman.
If only I could afford a $4,000 kit, though the $400 one will do for now.. Plus it matters how you play it not what you have.
True. I’ve been playing for a long time. Mine was a tax write off for sure
I wish the breakbeats came in weird colors tbh.
If they came in orange sparkle, lime green, or something it would be a total perfect choice to me.
I’m weird
I actually agree.. weird colors for a weird kit would make it sooooo unique
@@davegarciaofficial Ended up scoring the 2020 Sahara Swirl which is now discontinued. Great little kit and cool wrap!
@@ChrisCadenhead yeah yeah rub it in!! 😆😆😆
@@davegarciaofficial lol ... I wonder if it'd be worth the effort to replace the wrap! naaaahhh prob not lol
That would be cool.
I’m getting a breakbeats for shows. I play punk rock and don’t need 6 pieces so I’m downsizing! Thanks for the review!
That wrap is beautiful
all i need is a cow bell :)
Gotta stay the breakbeats is better tuned , there’s a lot of nasty overtones on the DW but that may just be the way it is in the room .
Certainly not over 3k worth of difference in the sound in my opinion I’d play either happily but the breakbeat looks like I’ve stolen it off a small kid 🤣
This vid not the best example of my tuning skills lol. Other vids of this DW on my channel
the ludwig floor tom is 13 '' not 14'...
Just sold my early eighties TAMA superstars for $200 and snagged a mint used breakbeats for $400. Used 12 times. (I’m in Canada) I absolutely love them! Always wanted Lewds and I’m so happy with the sound and hardware quality. I’ll look into that kick skin you mentioned but it’s not like I’m suffering g with the kick sound I have. Maybe swap out the kick claws just to customize a little. Kinda basic. I tune my kit by hertz now and I’m loving the sound I’m getting. Great vid. Thanks.
Daniel Kernya great trade!
WHATS YOUR OPINION between the Breakbeats and the Tama club jam flyer?
I’ve always been a Ludwig guy. The only Tama kit I’ve ever really liked is the starclassic.
@@insanedrummer89 thanks for the super fast reply. I believe I will go for the ludwig. Any recomendation for drum heads that I should get to replace the stock? I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT DRUMS. Thanks
@Lekin Guitarrista I like:
Snare- Remo Ambassador
Toms- Evans G2s, or EC2s, whatever works.
Kick- (expensive but awesome) Aquarian super kick ii
@@insanedrummer89 thanks man. You got a new subscriber!!!!!!
@@lekinguitarrista8445 anytime bro
Nice vid. Any tips for getting that tiny bass drum sounding so good?
I spent $50 on the super kick ii 16 inch lol. But I haven’t had to buy another one yet, and I’ve gigged with one a shit ton, it’s my main gig kit
Be willing to invest in good heads. The Aquarian Super Kick II that he mentioned is very good, though I personally prefer the Evans EMAD.
Also get a DW bass drum muffling pillow, or an Evans EQ Pad for the interior of the drum. Much more reliable than a conventional pillow, blanket, or towel.
As far as tuning, I just tighten the tension rods until the claws that hold the hoops on don't wiggle anymore, then tighten just a little more to make sure they don't come loose. That will give you a big, beefy, punchy sound, even out of such a small drum.
What snare are you using with the Breakbeats?
Didn't you think that maybe you should've used the same drum sizes, and don't you think the same playing surface would've helped also?! Rug vs. floor is a drastic difference in sound projection, I won't even get into the drum size difference. This is like doing a cheap vs expensive guitar ''War'' and using two different microphones and amps, totally senseless.
What is the color name on DW kit? Thanks
dw grey oyster
The DW kit sounds $3,600 better.
I play guitar and they always compare American made a $4000 Fender Custom Shop with $600 Mexican made.
Now I have a $3000 TD27 👍 I wanted the DW Performance for half the price but...the noise factor was #1 priority. Baby and wife! Lol
I’m your 1,571 Sub!!! Keep it going!!!
I totally understand that! My wife is due in October, it will be a new life indeed!
Barret's Music actually practice more guitar while I’m watching the kid when he’s sleeping! I can practice n watch him on video!!! Good luck on the baby. It’s an amazing feeling!!!
Were you a tenors player in hs? Your style suggests that. Thanks for the review!
Na. Lol I’m just weird. Only marched bass and snare in hs and college.
I like the Break beats by Ludwig.
It’s a killer kit!
so the DW increased my lifespan but the Ludwig took me back to your childhood so, I am at a loss :)
Haha
Great video, bud.
Thanks man! Hope all is well, been a minute. Still got your kit?
Sick playin!!😝
Thanks. Cool name Baz.
No difference in the sound, or quality at all, DW is way up overpriced.
The cymbals sound clean on the big kit.
Thanks man!
Hum, I have Sonor Safari (600$) same size but I used coating drum heads and drums sound fantastic, probably better than you expensive DW.
Sonor is one of a kind and hard to beat! So I wouldnt doubt it.
Immediately switching out the snare on the kit and assuming everyone's going to do that was a huge mistake for a comparison video man
I mean it’s a very basic cheap sounding snare. I’ve used it plenty of times on jazz gigs but yeah.
Regardless of the quality of the snare, it is a part of the kit and replacing it with an expensive one makes it no longer a $400 drum set and makes the entire comparison worthless. Imagine if you were comparing two guitars, a gibson les paul and an epiphone les paul, but you switched out the epiphone pickups for Seymour Duncan's. You're no longer making a valid and accurate comparison
@@sivishankari true true
I can appreciate what you're trying to do but you would really need to have the exact same size shells, same heads, same tuning to make it legit. Otherwise you're not really just comparing the drums themselves.
Just entertainment bro. Every set is diff. I love them both. I have a Mapex Saturn as well.
I’m sure you’ve never heard this before. But you look like Ed Sheeran
First time for everything
Man you should have your kit set up for left handed
Mr Alex I’ve been playing for 18 ish years. Lol open handed is part of my style yo.
Barret's Music you’d have better control playing left handed. You can’t get the wrist movements opened handed. Try left you might like it
@@AlexJenkinsTTAhahahah. Please do tell your drum experience
Barret's Music actually I’ve been playing 21 years and had a couple of zoom lessons with Dave Weckl. We spent the whole lesson on technique, I’m not having a go. Take some constructive criticism on board and don’t get so emotional.
@@AlexJenkinsTTA lol you do you man, funny enough Ive never liked weckle.
I think you accidentally put one cymbal on top of another. Or are they very big hi-hats?
It’s a stack I made, basically two trashy type cheap crashes put together.
Ed Sheehan can sure play the drums
Thanks bro! I play and teach music professionally.
clean technique
Thanks bro!
0:34 Truly frightening!!
Haha 😡😡😡😡
Neither kit in this video particularly sounds good…
Haha fair enough!
I’ve learned a lot since then. Check out one of my newer drum vids
didn’t know ed sheeran played drums
Ever since he was 14!
@@insanedrummer89 🤣🤣
The cymbals you are using with the Ludwig sound really bad. The actual drums were not too bad but the mics sucked.
I don’t disagree!
They both sound fu..... awful.
eh raw sounding drums generally don't sound that great. You/everyone is use to hearing doctored up drums. EQ Compression, Reverb. mainly. I would know, I record drum tracks for people. Its about the equivalent to a raw singers track, most of the time it sounds like shit cause were so use to hearing perfection with plugins and pitch correction. Welcome to reality ;]
@@insanedrummer89 Nice comeback hahah! keep up the good work! Now I'm getting the SuperkickII for the kick thanks to you. cheers!
@@ChrisCadenhead love that head bro!
@beetha true yeah my channel is honestly always been about being raw and showing flaws no kidding.
