A few days back I was wondering how these divers are given points literally I couldn't see any difference for the most scored dive of all time. This video has a good explanation....
if you know anything about diving, you probably know that Chinese divers are arguably the most precise and technical with splash management, in fact this specific technique you talked about was first discovered by Chinese coaches a couple of decades ago. Yet the only time a Chinese diver shows up in your vid is to demonstrate a 0/10 dive followed by a pretty mediocre dive🥲 and big ups to the amazing 14 yr old diver Quan Hong Chan for scoring two perfect scores to win the Olympic 10m diving gold with a total score of 466(world record)🤲🏻 edit: in the current anti-Asian climate, this can come across as a little insensitive because dedicating a whole vid to diving techniques without showing any Chinese divers seems pretty intentional if you have been paying attention to diving in the past couple of decades. And since people wanna bring up the Chinese government and politics under this thread, yes we demand accountability from the PRC government, but how is acknowledging the athletic talent of Chinese divers related to glorifying political actions from the PRC and in your logic, should we not acknowledge the Canadian athletes because half of Canada's history is colonial genocide and the current Canadian foster care system is practically the legal version of residential schools? should we not acknowledge the American athletes because the whole of America is the definition of mass incarceration and institutional discrimination? We shouldn't be comparing problems with problems but since people wanna go there.
China is currently allowing the mass incarceration, and genocide of an entire group of people. Let’s maybe not glorify them or their athletes right now 🤗

So interesting! I always thought the splayed out arms under water were simply to stop the divers' momentum down to the bottom of the pool. I would have never thought any movements after they are underwater affect the splash.

All of the perfect dives ever but one in international events were performed by Chinese divers, and yet the only Chinese dives featured in this video is a failed dive and a below average one (in fact, the worst dive from her in that final). It is like a video talking about how to shoot 3 pointers in basteball perfectly, and showing footages of DeAndre Jordan making threes as postive examples and Steph Curry sliped at the dunk attempt and shot an air ball from the corner afterwards in staples center as a negative example. Not mentioning the techinique to minimize the splash are discovered by Chinese coaches back in the days. The same "non-obvious" double-standards were featured in many Vox's videos since 2017. Honestly I feel sad for the American general public, they have no ideas about what is really going on in China because of this propagandas, while most of the ordinary Chinese know exactly what is going on in the US. If the day that two giants clash together comes (hopefully not), the Americans would suddenly realize how "arrogant" they had been this whole time.
@@bea8861 you're kidding right? The only failure in the video is of a Chinese diver while all successful ones are of Americans. This wasn't an "example". It was an attempt to minimize China's dominance over the sport.
And winning both Gold and Silver in the individual men's 10m platform--Cao Yuan and Yang Jian! I like the American divers, especially Jordan Windle. But the Americans did not do well. Plenty of splash.
This was so interesting to watch! I never knew the methods behind the palm facing entry into the water. However I wonder why palm first is better than a streamline entry because wouldn’t streamline also cause little splash?
No because straight hands would cut the water until it reaches the head where the airbubble produced will be bigger, by cupping the hands you create a small opening for the head and torso to pass throug that will reduce the splash, allso, diving with straight hands makes the head take allot of the impact from the water which can hurt quite a bit. In cliff diving breaking the surface with your hands is important to not dammage the head.
Any way China was only dominant player of diving games and she falls accidentally but she got bronze medal in that competition. Try to find another example of your video edition American first and heal your prejudice against China.

The Chinese guy Cai Yang won the diving competition this year on all three categories. It's a historic win for China. UK's Tom Delaney got the Bronze medal. It was a fantastic competition to watch. All the same, all the divers looked really beautiful and graceful.
The fact that what you do under the water affects the splash is something I'd never considered, but makes so much sense now that you mention it
The bit about the hands was really interesting and counterintuitive. I just assumed divers got their hands really pointy like a waterbird's beak 🐦.
Then making all that froth and bubble underwater was amazing. Just goes to show how much science has to be learned in sport.

Nitpicking but it bothered me as someone who used to dive. They didn’t scratch her dive because of a big splash. You can have a huge splash, you’ll just get less points.
They scratched the dive because she didn’t complete what she said she would. You choose the dives you are doing well before the competition starts, and there is no changing it. If you see you will do a reverse one and a half, you won’t get points for a reverse flip or a reverse double. You have to do the dive listed.
Im nitpicking at this too. Vox has some really insightful, quality made videos but they really slacked in the research department this one time.
What a painstaking effort to avoid praising any Chinese divers.

China definitely nails it in diving
what's that to do with the video about physics?
@@Vapouriste how they compare a 0 mark Chinese diver, with a 7-8 mark American one. If they really wanted to compare, why not use a full mark (perfect 10) as a reference? The Chinese divers got a perfect 10, yet there is no mention or analysis of why they got full marks.

A few days back I was wondering how these divers are given points literally I couldn't see any difference for the most scored dive of all time.
This video has a good explanation....
Came here because of the 14 years old just won the Olympic 2020 with a perfect 10 score 👍
Quan Hongchan is her name.
if you know anything about diving, you probably know that Chinese divers are arguably the most precise and technical with splash management, in fact this specific technique you talked about was first discovered by Chinese coaches a couple of decades ago. Yet the only time a Chinese diver shows up in your vid is to demonstrate a 0/10 dive followed by a pretty mediocre dive🥲 and big ups to the amazing 14 yr old diver Quan Hong Chan for scoring two perfect scores to win the Olympic 10m diving gold with a total score of 466(world record)🤲🏻
edit: in the current anti-Asian climate, this can come across as a little insensitive because dedicating a whole vid to diving techniques without showing any Chinese divers seems pretty intentional if you have been paying attention to diving in the past couple of decades.
And since people wanna bring up the Chinese government and politics under this thread, yes we demand accountability from the PRC government, but how is acknowledging the athletic talent of Chinese divers related to glorifying political actions from the PRC
and in your logic, should we not acknowledge the Canadian athletes because half of Canada's history is colonial genocide and the current Canadian foster care system is practically the legal version of residential schools? should we not acknowledge the American athletes because the whole of America is the definition of mass incarceration and institutional discrimination? We shouldn't be comparing problems with problems but since people wanna go there.
buddy its america, it plays well for their small egos to do this
I mean, China are some of the best in the world at most Olympic sports. I don't really see why it's such a big deal.
China is currently allowing the mass incarceration, and genocide of an entire group of people. Let’s maybe not glorify them or their athletes right now 🤗
@@paradoxicalcitizen1139 Buddy, UA-cam is a worldwide platform. I won't point out your grammatically incorrect points such as its. Wouldn't want to hurt your ego.
Yeah, the West is racist. It's been that way since the concept of East and West existed. Vox is very left wing, so they supposedly aren't supposed to be as racist as the right wing, but the truth is that the left wing is also racist, but they hide it better and aren't as open about it.
I thought Vox was going to analyze dives from China's new 14 year-old Tokyo Olympics champion. Disappointed.
This video was published less than a day after she won. I don't think it took them less than a day to make this video. That is why she is not here. Common sense.
@@counterfeitt There are multiple examples to show how a perfect dive could be done from previous world competitions or Olympics, but they must choose one from the US team, and include one example where a Chinese diver failed (when it was more of an accident as the board was slippery, not of an imperfect technique or poor execution).
10 2006 Chinese athletes won majority of gold medals in diving, yet they pick a zero point player as illustration.

Oh my god, I bet Chinese media produce content that focuses on their strengths and accomplishments, too, like, do you go fuss at them for that?
This got recommended to me after China's pairs excellent dive
So interesting! I always thought the splayed out arms under water were simply to stop the divers' momentum down to the bottom of the pool. I would have never thought any movements after they are underwater affect the splash.
I was a diver in high-school, always made the smallest splash, the coach would always use me as an example..its all on how you hit the water with your hands..and go in like an aerodynamic pin. My best coach as my father..
Hmm. The feet have to do with it also. If the position of your feet are messed up, the splash will be huge
@@бронза.вафля.конус Not so much the feet as it is keeping your legs together and straight, then your feet will follow suit.

In an alternate reality, there’s an olympic dive event where the divers try to make the BIGGEST splash
The bigger the dive the higher the injury, I guess people from alternate reality don't want to injure themselves.
Belly Flop time
I've seen a video about that somewhere, idk where and I forgot when, but its about making the most splatter when in contact with water, its not in olympics tho. Or not considered to be professional sports. Just I think like one of those goofy sports like Slapping tournaments or smthn
Doesn’t Red Bull do something like that? Lol
In that case we'll probably be seeing obese people landing splat in the water
Of all the perfect and near perfect dives by Chinese divers (who have actually dominated the sport for decades), Vox chooses a blunder by a Chinese diver to demonstrate.
I always await that splash when I watch dives, it’s so satisfying to see how big or small it may come out >

What wonderful explanation video. I started diving in the 80's when the 'rip entry' hadn't really been discovered yet, and dives were judged very well indeed. It is such a shame in this day and age to see dives poorly executed but with a rip entry score 8.5's and 9's when they are scarcely deserved 😪

I always wondered the importance of showing the divers under the surface but now I know.

Im not a diving person, but while watching the Olympics, I thought about why those divers made weird movements once they were underwater. I seem to remember as a kid, I would do cannonballs and when I flailed my arms in the water, they would mess up the big bubbles and turn them almost foam like
Honestly, I’ve never wanted to be a diver, but it is really fun to watch

How is this video criticizing Chinese divers? He just used Chang as an example of how the Worthington jet works and even shows how she got much better dive later.
@@bea8861 It is certainly part of Vox's anti-china propoganda since 2017.

I love this it explains a lot of stuff I never knew or understood
Any way China was only dominant player of diving games and she falls accidentally but she got bronze medal in that competition. Try to find another example of your video edition American first and heal your prejudice against China.

Great video. The way it is explained and showed is amazing. As someone who has no interest in olympic diving, it was a very interesting video. Great job whoever was behind this.
I know this is random but if you were covered in oil, would the cavity be both air and oil? And would you technically be touching the water? (Cause you knows how water and oil don't mix.)
The impact and position of the body underwater all affect the 2nd burst of water above the water.
That was delightfully informative...I love something new everyday!
Please make more "Physics of Sports" video.
0:57 "Divers can't change much once they're in the air" wow, that's such a wrong statement to make in a supposedly well documented video. Divers can perfectly change how much they're rotating in the air (Except if they dive straight with 0 rotations) so of course they can spin faster if they notice they're short of spin or spin slower by opening up if they notice they will pass the desired spin.
