I’ve lived on Vancouver Island for most of my life. In my opinion the best places to live on Vancouver Island can be narrowed down to a few communities.
The Comox Valley - half way up the island on the east coast. Recently voted one of the best places to retire. Offers endless outdoor activities between Mt Washington and the ocean. Skiing, golfing, boating and hiking. The International Airport makes travel a breeze. I grew up here. It's the best place in the world to be a kid.
Heading South on Vancouver Island…a few other best places to live on Vancouver Island are Parksville and Qualicum. Charming communities with long sandy beaches have become very popular retirement meccas for its mild climate.
Nanaimo, The Harbour City or Hub City for it’s central location. The ferry terminals take you either to North Vancouver or to the main Vancouver ferry terminals in Tsawwassen. A small international airport and from here you can easily drive to Long Beach and Tofino on the West Coast. Always something to see and do in the harbor.
Victoria, the largest city on the island. The most beautiful place on earth as described by most residents so most definitely agreed one of the best places to live on Vancouver Island. Often called Canada’s California as it is the most temperate spot on the Island and all of Canada. It’s a lovely city with diversified culture, history and lots of attractions. Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and home of the great University of Victoria making for a very stable economy.
And now for my favorite of the best places to live on Vancouver Island…Sidney. Just north of Victoria is the beautiful town of Sidney. A small seaside community on the end of the peninsula where the ferry lands from Vancouver. A gateway to all of the Gulf Islands. It is also home to the Victoria International Airport making travel a breeze. In my opinion and that of most who live here….the prettiest of them all.
There are far too many places to explore and things to see to be stuck indoors, which is why you see me out here enjoying the day in the middle of the week. Most of my friends are at work right now. I have the most amazing work - I love what I do and it allows me the time and flexibility to be here.

You are totally right, mate! The best place to live in North America. People are so nice , nature is stunning, environmentally conscious and cool mix of diverse cultures, Native Canadian, Asian, British, French and more. Love it!
Yes Sidney
I loved in Croften and Duncan
Crofton smells like cat litter
@@jackslabbath2434 Crofton smells like the saw mill that they have but when you live there you get used to it I also used to live across the road from Duncan's sewers but when you live there you just get used to it and don't smell anything
Comox Valley for sure
Courtenay and Comox are small out of the way shitholes too far from Nanaimo and Victoria the main cities and transportation hubs to the Mainland.
Well done Gerry! Great video. :-)

Thank you so much Geraldine!

What a Wonderful Video. but as some of the reviewers below have mentioned, once it is "discovered" something changes. I'm sure everywhere is more crowded.
Sounds beautiful - just worried about cougars and other wildlife when hiking
Croften and Duncan are beautiful to
DUNCAN IS A DUMP
@@maggieandjim1934 now it is but when I first lived there it was nice
Hi Gerry, what about Brentwood Bay?
I grew up in GVRD.. my first job was commercial fishing and my second was logging on Vancouver Island.. my opinion is opposite of yours.. the tiny towns in the middle of nowhere are my favourite towns..
You missed one of THE best spots: The gated community of Arbutus Ridge in the Cowichan Valley! Seaside living at it's best!
I grew up in the Cowichan valley...long before Arbutus Ridge was a place for rich people and golf-crazys....but it is nice, although IMHO it can't compare with Parksville or Bamfield.
Are these communities exclusively white , at least a majority?
I was born on Vancouver Island and South to North, here are the places I've lived ......Victoria,Mill Bay,Cobble Hill,Duncan,Port Renfrew,Naniamo,Parksville,Port Alberni,Campbell River...not a nicer place to live...hoping to be back permanently within the next 6 months(July 2019).....closest place to paradise I've ever been.
What about the threat of cuscadian subduction zone earthquake Victoria Island is a volcanic zone
@@maggiewang2948 there is NO Victoria island in the area people are talking about...it is VANCOUVER island...maybe if you knew the area you were pontificating about you'd at least get the name right....as for a volcanic zone...the island will sink into the Pacific ocean because of an earthquake long before it will be destroyed by volcano's,but if it keeps weirdo's like you away, keep on believing the cool aid.
How big is the difference in climate between Comox and Victoria?
Comox is a few degrees warmer in the summer and a few degrees cooler in the winter being closer to the mountains.
Victoria being surrounded by water and a bit father south is more temperate.
I've lived in both and they both get 5 out of 5 in my books
Hey Gerry, do you still have any advice or ideas for making money for someone who is looking to make the move to Vancouver island?
there is so much work here but finding a place is harder
Im coming to Victoria on the 10th and I'm going to need some work. I have nothing planned. I'm just winging it. Help! Lol
What are you looking for?
@@gerrymendria66 Sorry for late reply. I'm just looking for a job. Room and board. Cash. Anything really.

+BRUCE LEE.....Great Bruce..thanks ever so for that tip on the RV parks....saving madly for Class B to do this for next Siberian season. Must have looked at every site on line for something in my range....not much out there so far...but finger's crossed

I used to go see Grandma every August in Bouserier and my Cousins in Transcona.I grew up in Sudbury stompin Tom country.Drinkin.....fighting.....and then a girl and more fighting.
Sudbury would be great if it was affordable, cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. After MANY searches people said that you need a million to move to BC.I stumbled on good rates and great views.YOU will find your RV at price.....it will be their just I was their to help.
PORT ALBERNI IS VERY AFFORDABLE AND PERFECT FOR A ARTSY.
What'd be a better option for international students in nanaimo?
I'm not sure what the question is?
@@gerrymendria66 oh sorry my bad, i should've been more clear. What i wanted to ask was about housing options for students coming to nanaimo
(Those not wanting to stay in campus)
Is it possible to get good rentals?
I would try Used Naniamo.ca and Craigslist for rentals
Also most real estate offices have a rental department
@@gerrymendria66 thanks sir
I heard there's a valley where it never goes below 10 degrees. Where?
No such place i am from the island
I found out its Victoria. But the Person was exaggerating about the 10 degrees. It supposedly never gets humid in summer or wind chill in winter though.
True not Humid , As far as snow goes Victoria can get every few years extreme heavy snow storms ,,This happens when extreme cold Air comes from the north or the Mainland ,, Victoria can get Sea Effect Snow like Buffalo NY gets , normally the precipitation comes from the Pacific West of Victoria , but when it gets really cold it can pick up moisture from the Straight of Georgia in between The Island and the Mainland a few years ago Victoria had 4.5 feet overnight ,normally this last only a few days
Aww man, I was told Victoria has the nicest climate in Canada. I wanted to go there for this reason. Now You got me second guessin.
This is a Very Very Very rare occasion most of the time it is mild
just wondering - why were you in a car?
Hi Nate,
I was waiting for my wife thought I would make good use of my time!
Cheers Gerry

Yes.
I am going to have a small pension, where is the warmest and most affordable place to live?
Not on the island mexico
@@Karen-fs6lf No thanks , I am a loyal Canadian . A mini van as home on Vancouver Island , shall be okay .
man sitting in a car. talking. ?
Yup sitting in a car and yes I'm talking ,I've lived here over 50 years and been to every big and little town so Yup man sitting in a car. talking. ?
glh how can anyone stand in car and talk ?? 😂😂 Just kidding..
Is that a problem?
You're generous. Lived in Victoria for twenty years, the people there are the crankist in Canada. Even had some guy threaten to beat the crap out of me because I dared to cross the road with a stroller on a pedestrian crosswalk. No one says hello, they're all in their own little world. Couldn't take the bs anymore and moved back to Ontario.
Sorry for your poor experience, I have lived here on Vancouver Island for 50 years and I would say the exact opposite. There are cranky folks all over the planet but I can say I have never ever questioned my decision to move west from Ontario back in 1969. Best decision I ever made excepting of course marrying my wife.
Jerry.the reason you are sitting in your car is probably you are stuck in traffic and have lots of time to talk.
I have been here 53 years. Quality of life as gone down hill.there are to many people here, crime is rampant, tent city's are increasing as we speak.every body collecting government checks.yet there is a shortage of workers.lets import more people and compound the problem.!anybody thinking of moving here ,,go somewhere else we are full!!!
People were saying we're are full 53 years ago...Victoria is no different than anywhere else with problems. Personally I don't know anyone not working or milking the system.Yes It is busier and Yes More people but it still is an amazing place to live.
PS I was born and raised here on the island and have seen many changes in my 58 years here. And change can be hard but it is the only constant in our live.
When Change stops it usually means your dead.
Just My Humble opinion...
Cheers Gerry
Or maybe you opted to be a ghost town where people are all moving out due economic reasons. Houses are abandoned and rotting to the ground.
Every place changes as years goes-by, as long city or municipal controls the development of the island for the betterment of the people and the environment.
How is the Paky and Jake problem ,are they there now? I am looking to get away, but everywhere I turn, I see them.
