It has only been in the last few years that I've had time to explore the Island and have still not made it to the northen tip. I will say there are so many hidden gems that this video didn't talk about and neither will I. Saving those for the folks who live here!

Witty’s Lagoon has warm water and is great for kids as the tide goes way out and the Sooke Pot Holes are stunning. And there’s a lot of beautiful beaches and camping starting about 20 minutes past Sooke on the west coast. And don’t forget Port Renfrew!
A couple things to add to this list (from a person that has lived on the Island since 2005). Gas is 5 cents more per litre in Victoria due to the transit tax; Ucluelet is 1000% nicer than Tofino and most accommodation is also much cheaper there; and finally; there are a lot of cellular dead zones (including most of the drive between Port Alberni and Tofino/Ucluelet and a lot of the North Island) - make sure you don’t rely on Google maps (have a GPS or paper map as backup)
Born here in 69. My big brother and I when we were kids (summer of grade 3 and 4) use to ride our bikes to town, lock them to the railing in front of the Douglas building, take the stairs to the Basement, then take the tunnel that led to the East side of the Parliament building first level basement. There is a tunnel that leads to the Empress. Way back in the days, the Royals when they stayed at the Empress would use the tunnel underground systems for security reasons. My brother and I spent 3 weekends/ many hours exploring the Underground network in and around the Parliament buildings in the summer of 1977. The first room we walked into had the door open, was full of all the plans of the Parliament building, surrounding building/ structures. We scanned all the planes for anything that had dashed lines and took notes. All of a sudden, we had a feeling someone was watching us. We looked at the door that we had left open a crack like we found it, to see an eyeball staring at us, the door opened to the Guard asking where our MoM was, I replied she is working in the Douglas building. The guard told us he did not have a problem with us being there, as long we put everything back, and you did not steal anything. As the guard was closing the door, he said, " You boys know there is treasure around here". My big brother and Eye looked at each other, as if to say, If there was, we will find it. Well Over the Average tourist has no idea how extensive the underground network is in this city. Take Government street for instance where that whale bush is, if you walk almost to China town, and look back towards the House of Parliament, you will see a hump in the road, that hump never use to be there/ when you walk into the stores on that hump, you are actually walking into the second floor of those stores. Where that hump is, if you walk west to the water, you will see a parking lot that has a retaining wall built from large rocks. those large stones were from the ballast of the old long-range sailing ships from South America, British Isles and Europe or so the story goes. The guy that built the Parliament, Empress and a few other buildings left too many clues about the so-called treasure that is hidden under this city. One of the best free things to do in this city is the Directed Tour of the Parliament building. As they tell you Gene wanted to fill the Decor of Parliament with so much gold trim, but it was shot down because it would have shown that house had too much of it. Gene was also rumored to have been kill in some sex scandal and died penny less as he was taken for everything he was worth as it was evident that he new something. Or so the story goes.
Fantastic video, your travel guide was spot on! I especially loved how you highlighted Tofino's beautiful beaches and glad you were able to make it to Tacofino. Keep up the outstanding cinematography and showcasing the best of our beautiful island.
We had a spectacular time on the island about 7 years ago. Stayed at Ucluelet, Port Alice and Campbell River. The last week of May through the first week of June...it was gorgeous and we beat the thundering herds of tourists...pretty much had the place to ourselves.
Don't forget the Comox airport, the gateway to the Comox Valley for golf Skiing on Mt. Washington hiking, biking swimming and lots more. The annual Music festival in July
Moving to Victoria from Edmonton was a culture shock lol I'm actually allowed sick days here and running late on account of the weather is actually a valid excuse!
I have lived on Vancouver island my whole life 37 years, and I have still lots to see here. Even air b and b's here book up super fast! We hosted air b and b guests in our home one summer had full capacity every night for the whole summer! Some of the best swimming and tubing spots on Vancouver island are in the cowichan river for tubing and the nanaimo river for swimming. Vancouver island has some of the highest gas prices in all of Canada! There are lots of bears on Vancouver island! Absolutely DO NOT FEED THEM.
I have Google search and can’t find where to go for the Cowichan tubing:-( We drove around, looking for it this evening to come back before it gets any colder. Any address we found on Google doesn’t take us to any tubing outpost.
I've lived on Vancouver Island and several Gulf Islands since the 1980's and I've never been to Tofino. I avoid crowds and touristy places - lot's of quiet secluded spots to explore

I was born in Victoria until I was 14 and went back in my 20’s to go to UVic working on my MA. I love Vancouver Island. Tourist season is very crowded. And expect Canadian money from ATM machines, if you do not have a Canadian bank account.

I'm going in mid-September and had no problem booking a small room on Saltspring less than a month in advance. Man, I must be out of the loop - I didn't even know what you were talking about with insurance for activities. Can you insure an outing on a kayak? I'm bringing my inflatable.
Call your insurance company to see if they insure you for the activities you plan on doing. a lot of the time they won’t based on how risky they deem it.
if you go swimming when the tide comes in, the water is warmer, especially at rathtrevor in parksville just be careful where you set up blankets and chairs because when the tide comes in it comes in fast. and there are a lot of bears and cougars on the island so be careful out hiking, chances are slim to come across any but they are there.
As an Islander, Tofino is great, but don't overlook Ucluelet, just to the south. I grew up in Southwestern Ontario and and frequented the freshwater beaches of the surrounding Great Lakes. Tofino & Ucluelet are analogs to Grand Bend & Ipperwash; one trendier, the other more chill. I have zero regret moving to this island.
I've been living on the Island for 50 years and still havn't seen all of it! Ironicaly never been to Tofino! Why?? Been to uculet. Tribune bay on Hornby island is amazing. When the tide is out the beach seems endless. And Hornby Island is like stepping back in time to 1969, complete with love beads, peace signs, and people wearing purple silk kimonos. If your into fishing Campbell River, and Quatsino have good R.V. facilities, but take the advice and book early they fill up. Yes gas is expensive here, and so are groceries. Thats one thing about being on an island, everything has to be barged in. It's hard to make out but my profile photo is me standing next to an 800 year old douglas fir, found it in Chemainus in a small local conservation area.
@T B if you go hauking enough, you will see black bears for sure. I've seen several myself. As for cougars, I hike often and work a job where I am in the woods all day and I am yet to see one. They are crazy elusive. Considering there's about 3500 on the island (most dense population of cougars on earth) its a wonder we don't see them all the time. They are everywhere but masters of stealth
The ferries can book more than 50% to 60% reserve traffic. It’s actually very fluid (pun intended). They base their percentage on how much traffic they’re expecting. So don’t count on a 50% drive on ratio. Always always always book in advance if possible. It only cost about $17 extra but guarantees you’re on.
Many of the roadways are narrow and winding, with no sidewalks so don't ride your bikes, or walk, in anything other than single file at the edge of the road, and use any available off-road trails. Just because it's a vacation destination, the cars aren't made of marshmallow. DON'T forget you are visiting someone else's home, not a theme park. Treat the place and its people with respect.
I mean, a friend who I'm planning to visit lives on Vancouver Island, and he told me that when I'm gonna visit him, instead of booking a flight to Vancouver, I should book to Nanaimo instead, so that a ferry won't be necessary. Since I'll be staying over at Vancouver Island for the most of my planned trip.
You can fly into Victoria International Airport as well and it has more flights but it depends on where on the island you’re going. But if I were you and had never been here I’d highly recommend taking the ferry at least one way. It’s a beautiful trip and you wind through a bunch of the smaller islands, and only takes an hour and forty minutes to cross.
@@Trouble-Clef My daughter and I just returned from the Island 2 weeks ago and flew into Nanaimo; we usually do any way as we stay in Parksville. I always check the prices and it was $5/person less to fly into YCD vs YYJ. About $11/person less than YQQ, which we flew into the one time it was cheaper than YCD. Rental cars at any of the airports seems to be the same price. When the kids were young, the three of us would drive to the Island in the summer (July). We did this 4 or 5 times and only once made a ferry reservation, which was a waste, Unless something has changed since 2016, you do not need a reservation if you grab the first ferry on or off the island; few ppl want to get up that early.
As someone who lived on Vancouver island their whole life. I wouldn’t recommend Thetis lake sure it’s cool if you plan on paddle boarding swimmer or kayaking to the island but I you plan on swimming near the beach it gets really busy. I would recommend going in the morning if you want to go to thetis lake.
True. The largest number of cougars in BC in a area near Port Alberni plus lots of Black Bears. Use to live in Port Alberni. There are areas one can camp for free but there is no hookups for anything as you are out in the bush. You do have to know where to go as well. Most of those spots are accessible only by going on gravel roads that can be very rough for many cars. Plus the time of year make a huge difference. During July and August, when it is hot and dry, campfires are usually banned and some of the logging roads are closed because of fire risks. There are also many lakes on the Island that have nice beaches and warm water. The lake in Victoria is not the only one.
Feeding the seals At Oak Bay Marina began when the Marina's marine shows closed. The shows featured trained Orca, seals etc during a time when we thought that was an okay thing to do. When we figured out how cryel that was, the animals were moved along, but the released trained seals, (we locals always remember Tea Bag fondly😊), stayed in the only waters they'd ever known and kept hanging around the docks doing tricks for the fish scraps from the fisherman cleaning their catch at the washing station. Just a bit of backstory for you 😊. I'm 57 and a born and bred Victoria native. Feel free to ask questions 😊

Born and raised islander, there is an island tax get ready. As for bears more than you think. Tons of Cougar, most folk go their whole life never seeing one but the island is small so you are more likely.
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Since 2012, Vancouver BC has been my favorite vacation spot. Since 2013, I've wanted to drive from Prince Rupert to Prince George. I would visit Victoria more often, if it wasn't for long ferry rides, and long ferry line waits. Before the pandemic, I discovered this Port Hardy to Prince Rupert Ferry. I know that it's costly. I thought that it would be neat to see the inside passage. I'm afraid that I would waste a lot of time, sleeping in the cabin! Part of this trip should be looking at the scenery. It's essentially a cruise. I have only one flaw as a human being, but it's a big one: I'm not a dog person. I hear that dogs are allowed on certain decks. Did you see a lot of dogs on your ride?
@@tourdedogue4952 Hi Toure. I have NO ill will against dogs. I cried when I watched My Dog Skip, and I was 31 at the time. I JUST don't like poop bags, dog barks, dog slobber, and I just don't feel like they're the cleanest beings on Earth. But, I absolutely do not condone any mistreatment of dogs. I just prefer not being in their presence.
Don't forget Victoria's Gorge waterway for warm-water swimming. There is the swim dock at Banfield Park, Curtis Point and Craigflower-Kosapsom Park beach. Gas on the Island isn't just high because of taxes, but because it has to be transported to the Island by boat - and also, the Petro-Robbers KNOW they have Islanders over a barrel. Another nice lake in the Victoria area is Matheson Lake. Then there is Elk Lake, Beaver Lake and Shawnigan Lake. Further up there is Cowichan Lake.
Elk and Beaver frequently closed due to high fecal count. But, yes, the Gorge is a great place to swim. It's fun to play in the whitewater below the Tillicum Bridge when the tide is ebbing.
We are flying to Vic from Van, but on the way back... I reserved the ferry back from Victoria. What's the best way to get there from Victoria? Uber? Bus? Walk? What do you recommend. There are three of us.
I've live in Victoria and visited many places on the west coast here on Vancouver Island. There are no more retired people here than anywhere else. That's an old wives' tale and no longer applicable as it may have once been.Sorry if you don't like having reasonable speed limits of 60 km on one lane, winding coastal roads that hug our beautiful coast e.g. from Victoria to Port Renfrew. They're like that for safety reasons. The construction is all about upgrading the roads, keeping them smooth and safe, not full of pot holes and erosion, like other places in Canada or North American. If you'd prefer to just zip through and and speed then don't come to a beautiful scenic place like this. Part of the leisure and beauty of living here is the beauty, and taking it all in, in a relaxed atmosphere, not being fixated on getting someplace, but enjoying the journey.
Oh… I didn’t hear them complain at all about it. Sounded to me like they were just explaining to people not to rush and they were letting people know that sometimes there are longer delays with construction. I heard nothing rude in their tone like I do yours.
Lived on the island for over 30 years NEVER booked a reservation BUT never travel on a long weekend….that is awful and even with a reservation the lineups so long you miss your reservation
FYI... Beach fires of the sort shown in this video are not allowed on Tofino beaches. They've been banned since before this video was even posted. Propane fires are allowed as are vented wood burning fire rings that lift the fire off the sand.
Most roads are 60 km/hr? Hmmm…not anywhere that I can think of except urban areas. Hwy 19 is 110 km/hr from Parksville north and 80 or 90 for most of even the Malahat (except for a short stretch through the goldstream area. Granted, on a trip from Qualicum Bay to Victoria (175 Km), you will average around 80 km/hr. The highway is mostly 4 lane but not a freeway and goes through Ladysmith and Duncan and there are numerous traffic lights to contend with. Google maps says it will take 2 hrs 36 minutes, where it normally takes me 2 hours pretty much on the nose and I’m travelling with the flow and not being aggressive.
In the summer the ferries are busy and reservations are just a rip off, be prepared to wait, avoid the weekends, also the food is terrible and expensive! Everything is expensive in BC especially Vancouver Island. The best way to really see the Island is with a 4x4 or offroad bike and go camping with the bears and cougars. Avoid places like Tofino!
Do not feed the bears, it is a death sentence for the bear. They get comfortable with people and then they’re put down as a “problem bear” , and the fines are very heavy to the feeders. Enjoy them from a very safe distance as they can run way faster than you. Come and enjoy our Island paradise, if you like being out doors there’s a ton of great activities to do.

Hello! Im planning to visit the Island in September. Do you think is a good month to see orcas? They are my favorite animals and Im really interested in visit the island to get a chance to see them!
Its not the senior residents that slow things up its the hordes of tourists. Tofino so packed in summer and not very nice. Residents never go there then.
So here i am trying to learn things about this beautiful place as this nice couple is showing us what they said they would and I'm shocked with all the mean comments i read here. I used to think that Canadian people were polite and sweet but I'm changing my mind. Why do you guys have to be so mean to each other? Light up your heart and be kind to one another!
Know where to ride your bike. Most places by the water doesn't allow bikes, scooters and roller skates. Be respectful. If you don't see other people riding bikes is because the walk path you are is only for pedestrian. Dismount your bike and respect the locals! Also stop trashing the streets and parks with your liter. Take your garbage with you.
THETIS LAKE SAFETY WARNING: Please DO NOT suggest to tourists to "swim out to the island." Every single year, some foolish tourist/visiting International student decides to try it & guess what?? SOMEONE DROWNS every darn year. Besides, there are MANY LAKES on our Island, go up island & leave it for us locals plz.
You think you can see the entire island with a 2 month vacation? Haha, I have lived here for my entire life 60 years this July and I have not seen every part of the island, there are many places that you want and must see but you need a 4x4 to get there but it is well worth it.
I am from the island and here’s my don’t: don’t listen to this video. Thetis is nasty. Well thetis is nasty at the main beach so go around it and find a more secluded spot to swim. Also most of this don’t listen to it go wherever and do whatever
at oak bay marina you buy seafood inside the gift shop to feed the seals. I took my children & my grandchildren there all summer long as I hope to take my great grandson this summer as he just had his 3rd birthday. Where did they come up with some of this stuff. Duncan is called Drunken Duncan for a reason. Went to junior high there. There is nothing to see there.
The thing about the cougars is,usually, by the time you see him, it's too late.they are master stalkers.so always be aware of your surroundings in the woods. They are ambush predators.
Call us seniors not old people. Show respect towards your elderly. Shame on you. It’s bad enough that your describing us islanders as living in the sticks without any idea what civilization is.

UCLUELET!!! Quaint, quiet and friendly-and gorgeous, gorgeous...easy drive up to Tofino for a visit.

When i worked in Tofino back in 93 it was a ghost town, I miss those days!!!!

In the good old days, we could actually drive on Long Beach... Yes, I can remember how much fun that was... But then that was a long time ago...

#2. People can go on the Inland hwy. From about Parksville North bound, it's 110km. Only if you take hwy 1, it's mostly 60km.

When the tide is out the beach seems endless. And Hornby Island is like stepping back in time to 1969, complete with love beads, peace signs, and people wearing purple silk kimonos. If your into fishing Campbell River, and Quatsino have good R.V. facilities, but take the advice and book early they fill up. Yes gas is expensive here, and so are groceries. Thats one thing about being on an island, everything has to be barged in. It's hard to make out but my profile photo is me standing next to an 800 year old douglas fir, found it in Chemainus in a small local conservation area.
Vancouver Island has the ones of the highest densities of black bears in the world. Same goes for cougars.

@T B if you go hauking enough, you will see black bears for sure. I've seen several myself. As for cougars, I hike often and work a job where I am in the woods all day and I am yet to see one. They are crazy elusive. Considering there's about 3500 on the island (most dense population of cougars on earth) its a wonder we don't see them all the time. They are everywhere but masters of stealth
The ferries can book more than 50% to 60% reserve traffic. It’s actually very fluid (pun intended). They base their percentage on how much traffic they’re expecting. So don’t count on a 50% drive on ratio. Always always always book in advance if possible. It only cost about $17 extra but guarantees you’re on.

Many of the roadways are narrow and winding, with no sidewalks so don't ride your bikes, or walk, in anything other than single file at the edge of the road, and use any available off-road trails. Just because it's a vacation destination, the cars aren't made of marshmallow. DON'T forget you are visiting someone else's home, not a theme park. Treat the place and its people with respect.
I mean, a friend who I'm planning to visit lives on Vancouver Island, and he told me that when I'm gonna visit him, instead of booking a flight to Vancouver, I should book to Nanaimo instead, so that a ferry won't be necessary. Since I'll be staying over at Vancouver Island for the most of my planned trip.
The views from the ferry are stunning though. It all depends on how much time you have.
You can fly into Victoria International Airport as well and it has more flights but it depends on where on the island you’re going. But if I were you and had never been here I’d highly recommend taking the ferry at least one way. It’s a beautiful trip and you wind through a bunch of the smaller islands, and only takes an hour and forty minutes to cross.
@@Trouble-Clef My daughter and I just returned from the Island 2 weeks ago and flew into Nanaimo; we usually do any way as we stay in Parksville. I always check the prices and it was $5/person less to fly into YCD vs YYJ. About $11/person less than YQQ, which we flew into the one time it was cheaper than YCD. Rental cars at any of the airports seems to be the same price. When the kids were young, the three of us would drive to the Island in the summer (July). We did this 4 or 5 times and only once made a ferry reservation, which was a waste, Unless something has changed since 2016, you do not need a reservation if you grab the first ferry on or off the island; few ppl want to get up that early.

As someone who lived on Vancouver island their whole life. I wouldn’t recommend Thetis lake sure it’s cool if you plan on paddle boarding swimmer or kayaking to the island but I you plan on swimming near the beach it gets really busy. I would recommend going in the morning if you want to go to thetis lake.

True. The largest number of cougars in BC in a area near Port Alberni plus lots of Black Bears. Use to live in Port Alberni.
There are areas one can camp for free but there is no hookups for anything as you are out in the bush. You do have to know where to go as well. Most of those spots are accessible only by going on gravel roads that can be very rough for many cars.
Plus the time of year make a huge difference. During July and August, when it is hot and dry, campfires are usually banned and some of the logging roads are closed because of fire risks.
There are also many lakes on the Island that have nice beaches and warm water. The lake in Victoria is not the only one.

Feeding the seals At Oak Bay Marina began when the Marina's marine shows closed. The shows featured trained Orca, seals etc during a time when we thought that was an okay thing to do. When we figured out how cryel that was, the animals were moved along, but the released trained seals, (we locals always remember Tea Bag fondly😊), stayed in the only waters they'd ever known and kept hanging around the docks doing tricks for the fish scraps from the fisherman cleaning their catch at the washing station. Just a bit of backstory for you 😊. I'm 57 and a born and bred Victoria native. Feel free to ask questions 😊

Born and raised islander, there is an island tax get ready. As for bears more than you think. Tons of Cougar, most folk go their whole life never seeing one but the island is small so you are more likely.
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Since 2012, Vancouver BC has been my favorite vacation spot. Since 2013, I've wanted to drive from Prince Rupert to Prince George. I would visit Victoria more often, if it wasn't for long ferry rides, and long ferry line waits. Before the pandemic, I discovered this Port Hardy to Prince Rupert Ferry. I know that it's costly. I thought that it would be neat to see the inside passage. I'm afraid that I would waste a lot of time, sleeping in the cabin! Part of this trip should be looking at the scenery. It's essentially a cruise. I have only one flaw as a human being, but it's a big one: I'm not a dog person. I hear that dogs are allowed on certain decks. Did you see a lot of dogs on your ride?

I just prefer not being in their presence.

Don't forget Victoria's Gorge waterway for warm-water swimming. There is the swim dock at Banfield Park, Curtis Point and Craigflower-Kosapsom Park beach. Gas on the Island isn't just high because of taxes, but because it has to be transported to the Island by boat - and also, the Petro-Robbers KNOW they have Islanders over a barrel. Another nice lake in the Victoria area is Matheson Lake. Then there is Elk Lake, Beaver Lake and Shawnigan Lake. Further up there is Cowichan Lake.
Elk and Beaver frequently closed due to high fecal count. But, yes, the Gorge is a great place to swim. It's fun to play in the whitewater below the Tillicum Bridge when the tide is ebbing.

I've live in Victoria and visited many places on the west coast here on Vancouver Island. There are no more retired people here than anywhere else. That's an old wives' tale and no longer applicable as it may have once been.Sorry if you don't like having reasonable speed limits of 60 km on one lane, winding coastal roads that hug our beautiful coast e.g. from Victoria to Port Renfrew. They're like that for safety reasons. The construction is all about upgrading the roads, keeping them smooth and safe, not full of pot holes and erosion, like other places in Canada or North American. If you'd prefer to just zip through and and speed then don't come to a beautiful scenic place like this. Part of the leisure and beauty of living here is the beauty, and taking it all in, in a relaxed atmosphere, not being fixated on getting someplace, but enjoying the journey.
Oh… I didn’t hear them complain at all about it. Sounded to me like they were just explaining to people not to rush and they were letting people know that sometimes there are longer delays with construction. I heard nothing rude in their tone like I do yours.

Most roads are 60 km/hr? Hmmm…not anywhere that I can think of except urban areas. Hwy 19 is 110 km/hr from Parksville north and 80 or 90 for most of even the Malahat (except for a short stretch through the goldstream area. Granted, on a trip from Qualicum Bay to Victoria (175 Km), you will average around 80 km/hr. The highway is mostly 4 lane but not a freeway and goes through Ladysmith and Duncan and there are numerous traffic lights to contend with. Google maps says it will take 2 hrs 36 minutes, where it normally takes me 2 hours pretty much on the nose and I’m travelling with the flow and not being aggressive.

In the summer the ferries are busy and reservations are just a rip off, be prepared to wait, avoid the weekends, also the food is terrible and expensive!
Everything is expensive in BC especially Vancouver Island. The best way to really see the Island is with a 4x4 or offroad bike and go camping with the bears and cougars. Avoid places like Tofino!
Do not feed the bears, it is a death sentence for the bear. They get comfortable with people and then they’re put down as a “problem bear” , and the fines are very heavy to the feeders. Enjoy them from a very safe distance as they can run way faster than you. Come and enjoy our Island paradise, if you like being out doors there’s a ton of great activities to do.
Ferry reservations are a great idea. Look for super savers ! Arrive half an hour early. Correct book accommodations 6 months min in advance

Know where to ride your bike. Most places by the water doesn't allow bikes, scooters and roller skates. Be respectful. If you don't see other people riding bikes is because the walk path you are is only for pedestrian. Dismount your bike and respect the locals! Also stop trashing the streets and parks with your liter. Take your garbage with you.

I took my children & my grandchildren there all summer long as I hope to take my great grandson this summer as he just had his 3rd birthday. Where did they come up with some of this stuff. Duncan is called Drunken Duncan for a reason. Went to junior high there. There is nothing to see there.
