There is innovation and then there's is adulteration. Total appreciation for their energy, spirit and enthusiasm but beyond that this for me is a confused mess of a quickstep done to ridiculously inappropriate music. Why is Ballroom dancing resorting to this outlandish stuff. I personally don't understand or see the need, but I'm happy to hear from others why this is a good idea and why it is good ballroom style dancing.
Joe Testa . Greetings. Their quickstep offends me least of all their dances. Probably because they can’t do much more than keep shape and move across the floor. Yet I can’t read this mash of musicality, and find them arrogant because they appear to try to put little artistic effort into their show dances, which is insulting to the audience. As if serving up anything is good enough because they’re the great champions. You are correct. WDSF ballroom is ultimately doomed because the basic principals of rhythm, movement and technique are interfered with, which puts them on a path of no return. There is nothing more breathtaking than beautifully executed feather to reverse turn or reverse wave in foxtrot, or a natural turn or pivots in Waltz. Tricks are not always necessary and can be so overloaded to the point where there is no balance. I want to see some quality of movement, two people moving as one. I’m all for development but not at the destruction of the dance . Cheers mate. I said a lot hey
Brad Cherrie. Greeting to you too. No argument from me, I see exactly the same things. A couple of thoughts crossed my mind when watching this. One, I wonder what the great and late Bill and Bobby Irvine would think about this ( can't see them being awash with joy myself) and two, I had visions of twelve couples in a semi final all dancing like this. Calamitous is what sprung to mind and its likely the front line of a war zone might be a safer place to be than on the dance floor. If the elegance and sophistication of ballroom isn't protected and held as paramount and without the correct foundations that underpin great dancing, I can only but see dancesport especially wdsf reducing itself in the foreseeable future to resembling no more than circus acts. This one isn't that far off that for me. No sophistication at all and no respect for the dance and its origins and musical background. This is a swing dance, where was the swing Lots of promenade runs and scattered chasses, locks, tricks, exaggerated body shapes and heads thrusting around like broken puppets. I know this is a show performance and one want to show something different, but please don't replace real quickstep with trickstep.
Claudia M . I agree with progression, but I don’t believe in progression for destruction. There has been significant progression in the WDC style. My concern is that when you obliterate most standard technique then you will ultimately cause the destruction of the style, because the emphasis is wrong and the progression will continue down one track only. Time will tell.
