Fear is what keeps people from stepping into the unknown. Being a handyman is no different. I started my business without any experience. What I learned over the years is that "knowing" how to do the job is not as important as "willing" to learn how to do it.
Thats the worst advice I’ve ever heard. People are hiring you because they believe you’re qualified. No one hires people to learn on the job, thats how people get fucked
@@LosChongo That type of negativity will get you no where in life. I started with 0 experience yet, here I am 4 years later, hundreds of happy customers and I even got licensed.
@@utubehandyman I have zero experience or education on computer programming. Would it be wise of me to start a computer programming service?
@@LosChongo Ask yourself, what's stopping you?. Land a job, schedule it a few weeks out to give yourself enough time to teach yourself how to get it done. That's how I did it homie. Btw, most programmers are self taught. You need to think outside the box and can break away from the "system". System is designed to keep you down and afraid.
@@utubehandyman practically zero professional programmers are self taught, don’t be naive. I’ve owned a building and remodeling business for over 12 years now. Prior to starting my business I worked in the industry for over a decade and got a degree.
5:46 I always tell people. The only thing you need to start a business, is a table, some lemonade, and cups to pour the lemonade in. That is a legitimate business.
And now some places want you to have a business license to even do that 🙃
My only real experience was concrete and framing as a early teen, then at 40 I bought a quad and taught myself. After 12 years of buying & fixing my own rentals I started my business, I struggled with what to charge because I'd never charged anyone. After a year I gradually tripled my rates. My favorite is drywall patching, exterior painting and laminate flooring.
started my handyman business at age 38 with no formal training...or informal...armed with much common sense and you tube 10 years later and going strong.
I push for cash payments obviously and heck with a license, etc. until I am making enough money to have an issue. I also often take venmo.
The "income" reporting threshold for 2023 was lowered from $20k to $600 for online payment services like Venmo, Paypal, etc.
CBS News: New tax rule on apps like Venmo, PayPal could spell confusion for small businesses.
Thanks for always providing knowledge without having your hand out looking for course enrollments etc.
I am still amazed at how close our background, experience, and incite is. Even down to sir/ma'am. Good info.
Like the HM, I call my customers by their first name. I'm currently doing a reno at a Judges house and asked his wife if I should call him "Your Honor"..... she laughed and said "No, just call him Bob" (not his real name). Super nice people and a real pleasure to work for.
I started out as a handyman but found it too much of a hassle going from one trade to another. One day it's concrete, next day it's electrical, next is a paint job, then a plumbing job, then some carpentry. Too much aggravation, never really an expert in any field, tons of different tools and materials...ect
That's why I decided to pick one specialty and become the best in that field.
Carpet Repair.
I've been stretching and repairing carpet for 29 years now. I know everything about it and can handle just about anything that comes my way.
Today I have more customers than I can service. Everyday I get 5 to 6 new calls for carpet repair.
Making on average about $150,000 per year. I work alone, no employees and a 5 star rating.
Customers love my work.
This is great news! More DIYer's are trying to get work?! I'm happy to fix all of that!
Some solid advice Handydude. Looking forward to more.
Hard work plus advancing by self education & caring about the quality of work is a driving factor in success too
I started years ago in the remodeling trade then in maintenance , small engine repairs, jumped into the mechanic world, industrial machine & equipment repairs and now I find myself venturing into the handyman world because it's less stressful & more enjoyable
You're so helpful. I can't believe you do this... and yes... still waiting for that mountain bike video.
Be aware of customers that say they can only pay in installments after you present them the bill. I had one who strung be along for a few months, sending me $50/month and then quit. By then, it was too late to file a mechanics lien, since it was 90 days past the date I finished the work.
I worked for other contractors in California and Nevada plumbing, heating, AC, electrical and then managed apartments and did all the turn overs. Then i got my general contractor license and did all sorts of jobs for folks. Later i worked as director of facilities for large casino resort and then worked for the state as maintenance and construction supervisor. Now im going back into business for myself. Always enjoyed working for myself most. This is a great resource guys. I hope you make the most of it
One important thing to note is that in most states if you are a DBA ( sole proprietor) or LLC you don’t need to hire an attorney and I have found courts very friendly and helpful to small plaintiffs. But if you are an S or C Corp you MUST hire an attorney. I took on a law firm once that hadn’t paid a bill and won, granted they weren’t the brightest bulbs, but the court helped me a lot.
Courts don't help you much out here in LA-LA land. But truth is in this business a Judgement is one thing, Collection another.
I just posted a video about my rental…lawsuits, liens, judgements…they never pay off.
So you basically just eat it 😔 That's what my handyman friend does... sigh.
@@phiksit yup
Good answers handyman! I agree with the Lien business, it is a slippery slope and opens your name up (on paper) to the public. Not that it shouldn't ever be done, but I've heard stories of business owners doing such things out of spite, rather than based on a solid business principal.
Im baffled that people have the guts to start a business that they know nothing about and ask you what to charge and so on. I started working with my dad when i was 16 doing some side jobs. Worked up to flipping houses. I just started my own business this month at 27 years old. Ironically i still dont feel fully qualified but i think its the fear of the unknown plus my dad never taught me about pricing jobs and what to consider when doing so; that definitely didnt help me. I learned how to price stuff out and i appreciated what you mentioned recently about starting work is through friends and family which leads to referrals. Just did a job for someone that a friend referred me to, which turned into me getting a nearly 3k painting job from. Finished a tile job today for a friend in a nice neighborhood which has lead to a neighbor wanting their backsplash done as well, its an interesting feeling just starting out and getting these opportunities it really is a different mind set knowing its all on my shoulders from point A to B, but your videos have helped thus far and continue to help so thank you!
I hope you go out there and nail it brother. I know your dad's proud. Keep grinding 💪
Appreciate the encouragment!
word of mouth referrals are gold, I'm a painting contractor and friends and relatives of my customers pop in and boom, another "I need work done at my house". Love it, good luck to you!
Good video, thanks for posting it. Was very insightful.
Coming from the military calling someone sir or ma'am is a sign of respect. Lots of my clients love it
You're the best, Handyman!
Thanks for the video!
Great advice Handy. BTW, it’s yes ma’am , Yes sir here in Alabama no matter the age or status of the individual you are working with. This Friday afternoon video just perfect timing as I wait on the Mrs to head out for our supper date. Get well!
I will agree with that. Its so strange when I visit the south and people call me sir.
Yep, I'm from Alabama and a southern accent with proper manners and a clean look opens more doors than American express.
What part of Alabama are you from?
I install anything that’s backyard-related and God forbid the day someone decides not to pay me because I will return that same night with a sledge hammer🤣
I know people that do the handyman job, Pretty much anything that can be done to a house from the ground up, That work under the table for cash, They make a good 300k+ a year tax free.

Great video! Thank you
A bit like the scenario when a mechanics car always breaks down.. that moment when a life served electricians ceiling light fails @ 3:11 PMSL... Great Advice mate from UK Tradesman 👍
The trick to being a successful contractor in California is being one in another state.
I only spend time when repairing things for people. If parts are needed for a replacement or repair, then I immediately point it out and make the necessary adjustments.
You hit the nail on the head. DON"T HAVE KIDS until you can afford them. Far too many times people have kids and are broke for the rest of their life because they didn't plan. That is key for any job/profession.
I noticed it's always the unemployed chain smoking trailer trash welfare recipients that have the most kids. If you don't have a job, you need to keep it in your pants, or keep your legs closed.
Kids are a drain in capitalism
Soon you will either have to be an incel or be forced to have kids when abortion and contraception are outlawed.
Need that video on 'working with a-holes' next...
I knew a contractor if they didn’t get paid they shot out all of the windows with a BB gun, the kind you can get at an outdoor store that’s CO2 pistol size and holds hundreds of BBs😲💪
Hey Fellow Travellers, for those wanting to get into the Handy Man game with perhaps not a lot of experience or confidence just yet here are a couple of thoughts....Work on your own house first, You get the experience of seeing and experiencing the project from the Contractor's point of view eg What do I need, how much time will it take to do, am I happy with the results, things learned...You may then offer your services to people that need a hand but may not have the Budget for your services at this time...Could be simple stuff like mowing a lawn, blocked gutters, changing light globes, leaking taps, or doors not closing properly, etc. You will get some real-time feedback and experience and those less fortunate will benefit from your results...and it will probably lead to real paid work.
Handy you are a Top G.
Hide an egg somewhere at the job site...a time bomb. If the client pays up on time, you can go to site to do a "last check of the job" as a courtesy & defuse it. If they don't, the timer will eventually run out... & stink the place out. Maybe you will get called back to fix the worsening stink which lets you insist on the account being settled up front, otherwise there will be an "escellation"...
That would be an eggscalation I think
This is the best. Idea. Ever.
Great idea, I raise chickens so I could leave a 1/2 dozen in different places!
Maybe you've posted it in another video, but I'd love to know what vehicle body style (cutaway, pickup, etc.) Is best for a pro handyman? I'm sure they all have pros and cons. What's your opinion?
Trucks are much cooler for all around vehicle in my opinion. The full size work van however is pretty sweet with the room and secure storage.
There's different personal preferences all over the place. Some people like pickups, some people like trucks with trailers, some people like vans. I'm using a Jeep Wrangler because it's what I got at a different time in my life but it works, eventually though I want a compact pickup for easier debris hauling. Some people swear by vans but I would never want one or a full size truck or trailer with the amount of tight parking spaces I have to fit into constantly in so many newer developments.
Cargo Van, #1. The guy with the pick up truck comes to this realization after donating tools a few times...........
@@billysyms5761 Yeah but the pickup truck will get you laid lol.
I am a DIY type guy, 27 years old, no professional trades experience but a decent amount of experience with tools. I work in financial services Mon-Fri and am thinking on the weekends I can do handyman work for some extra coin. I seek to get some basic training to be well rounded in plumbing, electric, hvac, drywall and general construction but I don't want to invest thousands to learn though a trades program at a school. Any way to get into the industry without having an extensive knowledge/degree? Right now I'm participating in Home Depots free Path To Pro program, apparently they will be offering courses so this is something I hope they do in my local area.

funny. I was cleaning up the workshop.
Take an estimating class at your local ABC School. Helps puts an entire scope of work into perspective.
As a licensed plumber, I absolutely love when all the "handymen" do plumbing. I make so much money cutting out and replacing their repairs and fixes. Keep it up, guys, and don't let your lack of knowledge stop you.
Bless there hearts, my bank account adores them
🤣🤣🤣
Please do not call all of us out. I can do a great deal of plumbing and I do it right. There is very little I can do as far as plumbing is concerned and that little bit I let my client know ahead of time. Same goes with electric.
In most situations a handyman should be able to take care of the easier stuff. I leave the bigger job to those with the tools and skill to tackle the big ones.
Don’t say all. You’re not fixing mine. 😂
You're not talking about handymen, you're talking about crackheads pretending to be handymen
LMAO!!!!!!! Let them try Handy. They will fail
Wont pay problem . I am not giving advice but sharing what i found to be true based on my experiences might lead to futher insights. Non payment a difficulty best avoided with qualifying the client and doing a great job. If a sociopath wont pay , they will usually cave with a real threat of safety or ongoing complications . I dont know of street fighters or security professionals having this sort of problem, and i heard of roughing up methods that worked to get the job done in larger transactionson deals that went foul due to a sociopath being involved. I dont recommend that but thats what i have seen. I just chose not to deal with unreasonable sociopath people like normal people, because they dont care what is right or wrong. Real sociopathic people are masters of deception, and are liars and cheats, so it is good to ask around to see if someone is a good payer before you get into trouble with someone new and agree on payment / deposit upon start and completion if at all possible. Normal people will usually pay if they are on a regular income and the job was done well or even ok.. One tennant would not pay rent,so the owner who was a boxer- he just waited till the occupants were not on the property and threw all their stuff out + changed locks . The cops are not going to show up for civil matters. By time they got there stuff was outside on public property. The point is, reasoning with a thief is a waste of time. My observation is to sidestep the legal system- it may be the best course of action in most situations. If it is a civil matter the police usually run away to jobs that are a direct threat to public safety. Only certain things will they act on. I cant resolve payment with logic and reason when dealing with sociopaths. However, i put it in terms of trade the materials used on job remain my property until final payment which is only words but it may help deter someone looking for an easy mark/victim.
lol customers love being called buy their name! Its more personal in my experience
Handyman - what are those orange things behind you (in the video)?
Traction boards. Now turn over your man card.
@@TheHandymanBusiness Hahaa…I thought so but they so clean!
I really think they are a gimmick I have never seen someone actually use them in real life to get unstuck. I keep some on my truck just incase. I made a video on my 3rd channel where I purposely got stuck in snow and tried to use them to get out. They didn't do anything. Because of that video all these Amazon companies send me fee traction boards.
Every millennial knows that all you need to do is watch a few youtube videos to learn a trade or start a business. Then it’s all just a matter of counting money.
You do understand that millennials are in their 30's and 40's, right? I WISH I had all this information at my fingertips when I was younger.
@@ValleyWestHandyman yes, there’s a world of information is at our fingertips, but there’s two sides to every coin. Some will use this information to hone their craft while others will use it to imposter a craft. There is no substitute for experience. Period.
It’s one thing to watch a UA-cam video to figure something out in remodeling, it’s another thing all together to be able to just solve it from 40-50 years of working in the trades, having a Dad that literally did everything himself, built his house for $5,000.00 in 1958. I stuck to him like glue, we bought $200 cars, fixed those too. I’m not a UA-cam video maker, but probably should be, lol. I can build or fix anything but because I’m 62, my weakness would be technology, so just do my thing and enjoy other peoples videos, lol. Enjoy this channel though.
Old age is a killer.
Sir and Mam are perfectly acceptable here in the south. If you live in the south it's expected by both parties involved.

Starting a business without experience in said field first is like buying a car that sat under a tree for 40 years and expecting to take it drag racing later that night.
Experiences can be accumulated from the customer side.
Just got burned for my inheritance,I am learning to fight with paper.
I like this rapid fire style. I wish you had just labeled it rapid fire Q and A instead of the clickbait thing I knew it wouldn't be about. It was very entertaining and I don't even have any plans to start my own business. I understand you are trying to get views, but I wish you were more descriptive in your titles at times.
No one would watch. I have tested it out hundreds of times.
@@TheHandymanBusiness Stump Nubs just made a video on this topic and I think he nails it. You could do a video on how close you could come to the line without going over. ua-cam.com/video/e1dNP3Heejc/v-deo.html
I saw that video when he first put it out. Its a perfect explanation of how youtube works. I follow a lot of very large youtube channels. They are all doing extreme click bait now. Most of them have a graphic designer doing their thumbnails. It hate having to do it but its the only way to survive on here.

Thanks for the great series of videos but you didn't really tell us how you handle customers that don't pay you. It would be great to know how you deal with it.
Watch the video. I clearly answer this question.
We got kids and they get us sick what were gonna do ...
Double recovery markup ensures that you're going to prosper in your business. If there's no room for it in your market... find another market.
sir or ma'am hahah does he talk to people hahaha Sir and ma'am has its places around business hmm i dont think so got to use names. Its good to be young hehe means you have alot to learn
That is actually frightening that people think that they can start being a handyman with no knowledge or experience and it shouldn't be allowed. Getting some things wrong can lead to accidents and even death. I can just see it now, someone sat in their van watching a UA-cam video on how to connect up gas pipes and then doing the job. We live in times where we can start online companies with no experience but certain things you just can't do. Next they will be hiring themselves out as brain surgeons.
Why did you shorten your beard? Were you recognized too much? Was it a hazard around machinery? We fans need to know that kind of thing.

Re: The “handyman” that smashed up the bathroom, there’s more to the story than what floated around.
He smashed up the bathroom after less than 24 hours of not receiving final payment. The client was out of town and wanted to see the work before handing over a cheque.
The “handyman” has a screw loose and needs to seek therapy. Or, choose another line of work.
Def a druggie 🤣
No, pay me or else! (Hammer time)
After 30+ years in the trades, I'm disgusted with how many unexperienced contractors, property managers, real estate agents & insurance agents that don't know what they should know to be in their positions, yet collect huge commissions or fees.

They will fail. Started my own business after 7 years of Hvac both shop and field. 5 years plumbing and 2 years tile work: plus 10+ years landscape construction.

I would offer a guy who came to the realization of who's body he was in a proposition. Give me two years. In that two years the 5 Star guy will not only have you up and ready to be your own business, I'll help you start the business and feed you work. I'll teach you how to run it and avoid some of the mistakes I made along the way. I'll also help you get your licensing. Two years from now the lure of being a guy like me can be a reality.
Sadly, reality was out here in Los Angeles once a guy worked side by side with me for a day or two he came to the realization (and I quote) "Man, you work to f*cking hard".
I'd try to tell them "Stick with it 90 days brother, you'll get your sea legs and this will become easier". They always took the easy way out. Somehow they deduced there had to be some sort of easy way to make money, truth is if you"re at a point in life where you are considering doing trade work, making money will be hard work. This all looks sexy on UA-cam seeing the #1 Handyman Channel in the entire Universe's star doing his post game analysis but don't get it twisted fellas. You gotta be tougher than a $2 Steak to do this for a living. If you're Chopper Liver, don't waste your time.
