3 things to note: [1] They did not have access to sushi rice in 1805 America. They would have used Carolina Gold rice, hence why they are called Carolina Snowballs. [2] We did boil them in a pudding cloth which you can see over on Early American. [3] The recipe instructs you to use washed rice.
    Thank you!!

Are your pewter plates safe for things like tomato acids?! Is the story of lead leaching and deaths caused by this combination legit or very conditional/irrelevant in your case?

I was a kid in the 70's. I remember PB and ketchup in glass and we always had glass pop bottles. We collected them and brought them to the pharmacy to turn them in for Money. It would be nice to get away from all the plastics 🙏 Love you guys 💞💞

It’s sad how disposable a world we’re living in, and unfortunately there seems to be plastic in more products than we can imagine. My adult children are working on moving away from plastics, it’s going to take time but it will be worth it. I remember peanut butter came in a tin can, and products that were in glass just a few years ago are now packed in plastic, we’re going the wrong direction, society needs to start turning back to healthier products. Have a great week, God bless you both.

    1. Place a pot of water to boil, be sure there is sufficient room for six apple-sized dumplings.
    2. Divide the rice into six equal parts and place each portion of rice in a pudding cloth.
    3. Place one apple on top of the rice in each pudding cloth. Placed finely shredded lemon peel in the core of each apple.
    4. Wrap the pudding cloth around each apple so that the rice is evenly distributed around the apple. This is the most challenging part! Once the cloth is tied, gently massage the dumpling until the rice surrounds the apple. Be sure the cloth is firmly noted and there is space for the rice to expand.
    5. Boil the puddings for 75 minutes.

Thanks for the plastic rant! Unfortunately, not a lot of people are aware of it and if you start thinking about it it’s scary that we have turned our beautiful world into this toxic waste land. I applaud you for this public service announcement. My dad died at a fairly young age from colon cancer so this means a lot. Also my sister is cleansing her home from plastic. It is hard though. Almost everything is wrapped in plastic or containing plastic.
    Thanks again! Julie from Sweden

My sister's husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer. He was only 65 when he died. He would heat his lunch every day in a microwave in the plastic container in which he took it to work. My sister suspected eating food heated in the container contributed to or may have even caused the cancer. So sad. His son to this day does not purchase any foods that are sold in plastic containers. So many unnatural and unhealthy products we are consuming and even breathing in.
I hope your little one comes into the world healthy and beautiful.

Justine and Ron: I think I found it. Looking over your receipt it states "then have ready some thin cloths to tie the balls in; put the rice in the cloth" so the cloth will help adhere the rice to the ball and it even warns "be careful how you turn them into the dish that you do not break the rice" so very delicate dish. I think on your 2nd attempt they will be better. I see the diappointment.

You did great giving it a try, folks. Have you chatted with the Townsends to see what they did? No big deal and I'm amazed at Justine's patience. Have had three kids (now in their 40s) and when you're pregnant you can EXPECT your emotions to be all over the place -- VERY SOON you'll start to feel that sweetheart inside fluttering around and it will be hard to concentrate on ANYTHING except what the little character is doing.
Just for fun when I got the ultrasound for my third kiddo, it was SO fun to watch. He was really jumping around in there, pushing himself off one side of the womb to go flying to the other side. MAKE SURE YOU GET TO WATCH YOUR ULTRASOUND(s). If it's possible for Ron to go as well, you both will enjoy seeing what the little guy or girl is doing. I think it's possible to get them to take a picture of it as well to take home for the baby book.
Love you guys and SO happy for you, and.your adventure with the new one!!!
By the way Ron, with all your carpentry talent, are you crafting a Frontier high chair for the Sweetie?

I'm sorry your dish didn't turn out this time. There's nothing worse than buying all of the ingredients, putting in all the time and effort, and then it's a disaster. It's so disappointing. Justine... found my snowball recipe. It came from September 2015 Townsends calendar. So they used the recipe from Primitive Cookery. Yes I kept it as a whole apple. No egg... fill the core of the apple with the lemon zest. Mine worked just like their's and we did it again for Crockett Days so we cooked it over an open fire and it also worked just fine... it's just a boring recipe. We did add syrup to liven it up. It does work... you will feel the rice if its cooked or not.

I agree that we need to cut down or out using plastic in our everyday life. It's difficult when packaging of goods are already in plastic bottles or bags.
We can do 'our bit' by buying loose produce, carry our own grocery bags (cloth) to pack our groceries and recycling existing plastic containers etc.
The more 'green' we can become, the more our planet can thrive along with its inhabitants...thank you for bringing this to our attention! PS...Justine, you look glowing in your pregnancy. ❤

Pregnancy is normally 40 weeks. 37 weeks is considered full term. 40 weeks is considered full full term. Why not wait to find out the gender until the baby is born? Back in the 1800s the gender was not known until the baby was born. I’m only kidding of course. You do what you want. I couldn’t wait either. But in a way I wish I would have waited until they were born.

it has to do with the linen wrapper, i made just Jasmin rice around a peeled apple.. I put down a bottom layer of rice and placed the wrapper in a big muffin tin then poured the rice around the apple till it covered the apple then twisted the cloth tight and tied it together .....as the rice swelled in the bath it formed a ball..... but had to let it chill before i opened it up.

I have a feeling you needed to use a different rice like a glutinous or sweet rice not a regular one. Try using some long-grain sticky rice varieties. It's very important to rinse and soak the rice before cooking, or it won't turn out right. The recommendation is to rinse the rice under cold water until the liquid is no longer milky-colored. Then, cover the rice with two inches of cold water and let it soak for 2 to 24 hours. Drain the rice before using. I love your videos and the fact that you're not afraid to show the fails. Love to hear the latest baby news !👶 Maybe we can look forward to some 1820's advice on child rearing! ❤

I agree, we use stainless steel hot/cold mugs for our coffee and water. Saves so much money and is so much better for the environment.

Fiberglass is NOT plastic. It’s GLASS! It’s melted glass spun into a fluffy material similar to the way melted sugar is spun into cotton candy. They use a lot of recycled glass in the making of it. My husband worked for a company that made fiberglass.

This was an eye opening episode & I apprecited thia rant. Looking through my house, inside my refrigerator & etc, I see nothing but plastics! We have a lot of wood on the house, we recycled barn wood, white washed it & made accent walls with it. My furniture ia real heavy old fashioned woods. But loke what hubby sais ir is a double edge sword. I have got rid of all seed oils in cooking, and cook only with beef tallow, bacon grease, butter & lard. Trying to at least ear healthier. God bless you two.

I’m eating salad at the moment hehe. I enjoy watching early American and frontier patriot. Also love seeing the snow. Where I reside we have fires here in California in LA county. I feel very sad and helpless from what I have to help. I’m trying to think positive and will focus on what I can help with. Anyways enjoy watching this.

    Hi, Ron and Justine!
Awwww! What a shame about your Carolina Snowballs. Justine, try the recipe with cooked rice this time for a future Chew and Chat? Your baby bump is sweet! Hope you both had a wonderful New Year's. God bless!

Our last house had carpet that was something like half recycled plastic bottles. It sounded like a good idea at the time...don't ask about the static...

    Hi guys,
Nice to see you, and looking good.
Just so you know, when you build your own house, you can decide what kind of pipes bring you water. My husband built our house, water pipes are cast iron and steel. Not one inch of PVC. However: I can't get away from the milk bottles, the shampoo bottles etc...
Good luck with staying away from plastic. Then again, when you drop the shampoo bottle in your shower, aren't you glad it isn't made out of glass? Not saying I'm for plastic, just saying there's no getting away from it...
Take care the both of you. Love to watch you and listen to you.

When I was stationed in England in the early 1980’s, they shipped in soda from the states. It became a crap shoot as to whether that batch of soda tasted like the aluminum can. The soda companies did fix that problem but in the meantime, a case lasted two and a half weeks for two people, who needed caffeine to function when you couldn’t drink anymore coffee.

Our local plumbing code requires copper pipe and cast iron for drinking water but we use pvc for wastewater. I’d be curious to see if we have a lower cancer rate here

Absolutely beautiful there…. Can I come with my boys on a mini vacay?! Like I said on the other channel, they fell apart just like weather here did! After following weather all week and anticipation of 1-4 in of snowfall we got was hard, mean ice balls! So next time, don’t cook “Carolina” snowballs, try like Pennsylvania Snowballs! Ugh! 😅
And, it still looks really yummy! Justine, you are preg and killing it! Don’t be so hard on yourself plus Ron loves everything you cook!❤

I wonder if u parboiled the rice, then filled them, then wrapped it really tight, let them cool in the pudding cloth, and shape them into balls?
