  • The new integrated Dolby Atmos renderer is included free in Pro Tools Studio and Ultimate since the 2023.12 software release and improves the efficiency of immersive mixing workflows with simplified setup, mixing, and monitoring. You can now render and monitor Dolby Atmos mixes within Pro Tools without having to roundtrip to an external renderer.

I'm just starting out with Dolby Atmos. I have gotten mixed reports on the state of play here. On one hand, the new integration has lowered the bar for entry significantly. On the other hand, some mix engineers have told me it's a waste of time to mix in this format unless you're working for big label artists because it's too expensive. I built a 5.1.2 system for about $1000(on top of my stereo rig)
My thought is that this is not a prohibitive cost of entry.
The other thing people say is that no one has a speaker array in their home so it's pointless. I have found that the re-renders negate this point. I can create 5.1 mixes to upload to UA-cam and in the stereo format I have been re-rendering certain elements separately as a binaural stem and then adding them back in while mastering the 2.0 re-render. The creative potential is endless and if people can listen on a speaker array, that's just the icing on the cake.
