- Today we have a deep dive discussion on if Fanatics dropping GTS as a distributor will have an impact on the sports card hobby shops you shop at and the group breakers you use. Could Blowout Cards, hobby shops & even breakers like Layton Sports Cards and Backyard Breaks be in trouble of going out of business? How does the sports card market crash impact what's going to happen?
Been a LCS store for 30+ years. My "local" distributors in CA burned me over the last 4 years out of my allocations. I had decent allocations as I purchase half to 3 cases of mostly every product. Now I am down to 0 to 1 boxes on all sport and non-sports. Use to spend $180-250K per year with them pre 2016. I know that ain't crap now dollar wise. I have to pay them Ebay market prices on first day release for product. If the product has little demand they will flood you with product. If it is hot I get one box or zero boxes unless I pay market value at the gate. Nearly destroyed my retail LCS business relying on my "distributors" as I had to adjust my business model to survive because of their unethical business practices as a wholesale distributor. I just have a bad taste in my mouth as these Distributors have used my original allocations to line there pockets. Screw the 30+ years or loyalty to the distributors; this is a new era of cheating distributors. These distributors were scalping even supplies when demand was high. Karma

Hopefully breakers can be phased out, they are the reason everything is sky high in prices. I don’t know where they getting product but that might be the reason everything is dried up in retail stores. Instead they give it to them guys.
Trust me u r right! and they don't get it from fanatics or panini they get it from mj holdings. But mj holdings is no longer allowed to touch cards in retail stores so hopefully the shady stuff goes away. What they would do is mj would not put all the product out then they would sit in boxes only they could touch. Then they would send the boxes back to mj holdings and they would do whatever with the product. Not to mention the shady vendors running their own game plus the front end before the product gets sent to the retail stores.

@@Trading_Cards_Immortal You do realize it's the distributors, hobby shops AND Panini selling hobby cases to the highest bidder , in most cases the breakers. I used to be able to get multiple cases of ANY hobyy product at wanted a wholesale prices. Breakers and Covid comes along and now I can't even get retail cases of blasters anymore. It is what it is because greed trumps all in this "hobby."

Cutting out the middle man should lower very overpriced boxes. Breakers like Dave and Adam's have help kill the industry.
When I was a kid ( 1965 ) before the computer, you could buy Baseball Cards in every variety and convenience store in the Country. Somehow, without digital communications, computers and smart phones, the manual distribution network worked very well. How was that possible ?
Fanatics CEO talked about just that when the acquisition of MLB rights took place. I think we will get back to the days where you see sports cards EVERYWHERE. A good thing for collectors and kids, a bad thing for the “investors”.

There were sales "reps", who had a market area. They pushed the product to retail outlets . Used to buy sports cards from candy distributors in the early 1980's. Had a sports card shop up until 2006, from 1984. I bought direct from all manufacturers. Topps tried promoting back than also, Alan Narz would host trade shows. Good times.
It's sad when a hobby shop was allocated their product and recently watched that slowly reduced. When a distributor wouldn't give normal allocations and say it wasn't available but a week later that product offered at 50 percent higher than the prior week. Catering to the breakers and not the shops that kept them running for years and being greedy you see they destroyed themselves. Hope they saved some money it will be gone soon
The fact they would say we ran out but they would have it next week for more money always burned me up.

Where have you seen the amount of inventory one of these large breakers is carrying at any given moment? I'm assuming it was a video. I'd love to check it out.

Fast forward to 2025, I'd be surprised if prices haven't come down on retail/hobby because product is just SITTING. Breakers will move on to the next flipping craze if the margins are not 2x/3x. They aren't hanging around to make 10-20%, no way. I'm sure plenty of breakers are nice people, but we are where we are 100% BECAUSE of breakers.
Mainstreaming the industry, or an attempt to and marketing. Cheaper and access to products for the individual.

GTS and others have the Good ole boy network, and wouldnt let new people in the last 10 years with .. the last 3 years they swolled up allocation handed out to their "friends". distributors game the system, they topps can easily work with hobby shops or online... Also just to add, just think they would get allocation from Topps or panini at wholesale prices, for example National Treasure hobby box might cost 800 a box and the good ole boys could then charge "market" value .. which some NT basketball hobby boxes go for thousands.. so the good ole boy network made huge profits the last 3 to 4 years..

I just hope fanactics has better customer service and they get rid of playerworn cards cause I have seen pictures of topps giving players someone else’s jersey and telling them put it on so we can say it’s player worn. I had redemptions with panini and had to call call call to get something for my redemptions also
Stopped by Fanz on Saturday. They had a huge Topps display in the store. They had hobby boxes of Series 1, Series 2 and Gypsy Queen. Blasters, Hangers regular packs and fat packs of nearly all 2022 baseball products (heritage, Gypsy Queen, Series 1/Series2) soccer, bowman U. It was pretty cool, and I wasn't expecting to see such a large display--the kid behind the counter was handing out the promotional packs too

Any thoughts re: D&A recently setting up shop in the Netherlands? Seems as though it was executed pretty quickly. Was it done based solely on internal decisions to pivot and grow their global exposure? To protect against the challenges you suggest with Fanatics going forward? Or is it actually part of a joint plan with Fanatics for European domination? Any business strategy/legality why the Netherlands, or ALL countries, was chosen for their European footprint?

Honestly with the prices of product and authenticity of signatures, jerseys and cards themselves why even collect? Spend your money on something else. Take up a new hobby.
I agree a lot of people will have cards still but the margins are going back to like they used to be. I opened my shop in 2018 and even then people dont realize that 80% of product we were making single digit margins on. A lot of product you just hoped to get your money back out of. I was lucky enough to be in the past couple years during the crazy boom so if worst comes to worst I sell off my product and take it to the house

If they buy panini those brands will remain, especially contenders, but for now, they only own the Topps brands

All they have to do is have a authorized dealer website the brick and mortar shops, and selected breakers can order from directly with different price levels for each. The logistics part of it should be easy for them because they already do all of this.

The fact that I have TONS of redemptions I have been waiting on from panini since 2006 and they recently after I have been asking for years stated they are gonna start sending replacement cards out starting September tells me they are trying to get all that taken care of b4 they sell out.

@Richard I have well over 30 that are atleast 10 years old some are big too one was a jumbo patch auto /5 of kobe from 2009 absolute and another one from 2009 limited patch auto /5 of kobe. They sent me 2 pos kobe packs I got 1 the other was stolen in the mail and I have called and emailed them multiple times with no answer
Can yall talk about how it takes panini to send out there redemptions 2 or 3 years later what are they doing and why dose it take panini that long to send out redemptions me if you cant get the player to sign there cards then thay should not make there auto cards bc it takes a long time for them to sing and not only that i see some same cards singed by the player but wont send out the redemptions and thank it's bs bc if you send a redemption in it should not take that long plus the player's have there time off where they have free time and see them sing there cards but panini dont send them out till 2 or 3 years later and dont get it hell if the player dont sing dont make auto cards of them or redemptions if they dont wanna sing and stuff but bs how you gotta wait years to get your redemptions and bs if you ask me bc your paying your hard earned money in boxes of cards and get a redemption and send it in and gotta wait 2 to 3 years 4 them and truth what dose sports card radio thank of that

Who has records of what we collected for the past 20 years and if we decide to sell something the IRS wants that piece of the pie. You trade a few nice cards for a better one then sell it they not gonna care about the cards you traded they gonna want all that tax on the one you sold it's gonna be a nightmare for everyone.

What Fanatics wants to do is put all the long time card stores out of business buy cutting the distributors that supply some of them with what little product the do give them, They don't care about the people that have grown this hobby/business, they want breakers, Nft lovers and all the new young bucks that just want to flip as much product as possible! it's a sad time for long time card store owners that have made this business what it is! It will be even worse when in 2 years they will have Football and Basketball as well of course the next purchase will be Panini!
Once panini loses the license their quality control will go up. Look at prizm baseball, high quality and nice looking cards lol

Fanatics should just distribute direct. One price for approved dealers, and another for direct consumer. Allow a wholesale mark up to keep the hobby shops going, but it would also keep prices where average folks actually have a chance to get cards at the retail rate..
I can understand the evolution with sales & marketing, but I feel sorry for Blowout & D/A if this is the end of the road for them. Group break crap just drives prices up quicker with all the new releases. Like Pac Man with basketball he can go away anytime....🙄🙄🙄 Figures D/A would have pulled that with the Vicks either 1 of them or both went to law school I think.
There is not going to be a high end market soon enough, as the depression deepens, if fanatics isn't careful they could find themselves in to much debt and bankrupt themselves, thinking they can run 10k boxes out into the market forever isn't reality itself, everyone needs to check down, we are in a world of hurt and sport cards are going to keep hitting lower or just plain gone.
if is very simple Fanatics will sell direct to hobby shops, online stores, breakers, end consumer all based on a tier pricing system. Backyard Breaks is not going anywhere. Why do I need a distributor when I sell it to the breaker and the online shops for the same price. The only thing I need still is the retail stores for the base boxes and products.
Topps has nearly convinced me to stop buying their products. They put my favorite player in a SP RC in this last series and that's feels fucking predatory. I opened a Jumbo and a Hobby (normally would have been a hobby and a couple blasters most likely) and finally gave up on trying to pull the card when it dawned on me that I had spent enough money to buy the damn card outright from ebay. TOPPS - is that what you want from me? Stop ripping your packs, and just buy from others who are ripping your packs? I don't need to hand-collate your sets, and I definitely don't need the 600-700 base commons left over after doing so when I went on a SP chase. And I absolutely can not afford to rip a whole case looking for one card. Julio started this season on OPENING DAY. He belongs on the main list in S2 and there's no fucking excuse for leaving him out other than that you're trying to FLEECE ME. Fuck you, Topps. I'll get that card from ebay after the hype starts to fade from it because of whatever manipulative abusive garbage you release next in Update, and I sure as hell will not buy a single pack of that product.

Hard to stay in the hobby when you can’t buy the products or if available they are overpriced. Having to go to eBay or stockx to buy cards on a secondary market is the line I won’t cross and have stuck to it.
I wouldn't doubt GTS negotiated badly and this Is the outcome. I am sure GTS, will somehow still be involved. Manufacturers need a logistics partner.
Remember that Topps isn’t actually a manufacturer. They outsource that to a company that already provides the logistics. GTS is done.

Monopolies have been legalized through the disguise of independent companies owned by the same investment firms. Private equity groups and hedge fund companies create subsidiary investment firms to monopolize industry disguising market contributing products companies as independent from the industries demanded product, yetthese companies corner the market by appearing to operate independently as different companies, all the while, they are all branches of an owner/owners, extending out from the same private equity or hedge fund rooted tree.
If fanatics can't seriously expand the hobby then finacially they will be unable to support what they have/are doing consolidating all card production in one spot. currently there is way too much product issued and fanatics will need to issue even more

Exclusive deals with breakers can and will be problematic. The distributor market (80%) was and is doing monopolistic practices with trading cards. They all deserve what is coming in this perfect storm looming over speculation. Having Fanatics run a monopoly will hurt the market long run. Beginning and younger collectors have been completely priced out of the market. The fun of collecting is no longer there. Even low end product is being speculated. Fanatics has not even publically addressed how they will distribute product. I guarantee you that Fanatics will have to deal with corruption within its own house. From manufacturing to distribution their will be corruption.
If Fanatics are vertically integrating their business, why wouldn't they sell to breakers?
Because breakers destroy the hobby it is better to have a more monitored and diverse distribution . In the end card shows and online sales will become more active and wipe out middlemen raising prices and gouging customers and restricting supplies to sell to good ole boys they are in buisness with.

Fanatics is going to have to allocate only so many boxes of all varieties with a limit per dealer. And sell to people to with a controlled and monitored maybe through card and or email , amount of product to spread it out evenly to all consumers .which will make more breaking disappear and card shows will be come more popular to aquire loose cards and less hoarding of product with dealers.
