@@D.MINORRR These older NBC executives would come up with their 16 year old grandkids wearing brand new Nirvana shirts and introduce them to the band. Nirvana were totally nice but it was pretty awkward and funny. I remember them laughing about these new fans. I remember leaving, going up the escalator and looking over and seeing Kurt sitting on a foldout chair with a bunch of people (music journalists?) standing around him asking questions. He had his head down and his hands covering his face. His Fame was like a week old and he looked like he was already bummed out

There's a bit of a juxtaposition there since Kurt simultaneously did want to "make it big" while also hating the negative aspects of fame itself. A very human thing to do of course.
In hindsight for me I think a lot of these people were just really naive to how the world works, not even just the business side. The music itself is always pure, people are not sadly.

That whole music scene was just amazing, really, especially in hindsight. So many excellent songwriters shoulder to shoulder. Even the stuff I don't care for I still respect how unreal it is that they all cultivated their own unique music, wholly different from the other, enough connective tissue to feel the part of the world they came from, separate enough to be unique.
That period is almost like a pop culture vacuum. Suddenly, all these decent guys became world famous, ubiquitous pop icons. I believe their authenticity can be found in the number of them who did not make it.
One of the other things which rarely gets much attention is just how damned young they all were while creating some truly extraordinary rock/pop music compositions. Especially groups like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Mad Season. Odd time signatures, modal changes, strange chord progressions, all coming from relatively untrained 18-30 year old kids.
Lastly, they were virtuous in ways unparalleled by many other "scenes." Most were monogamists seeking to start their families and have children, rarely taking advantage of the privileges afforded to celebrity in terms of young women idolizing them and surely throwing themselves at them. Yes, there were many prolific drug users in these groups, but it has no bearing on my assessment of their moral compasses or virtuousness. Most appeared to be empathic guys and girls who cares about each other and other people. Rare stuff considering the hair metal scene in LA in the 80s, and the hip hop takeover of the late 90s-now.

It's so weird that they didn't mentioned Jason by name. We all know he paid the $606 and is even featured in the cover. To call him "a friend" is ridiculous. If he didn't play was because Kurt chose he didn't liked to have another guitarist in the end.

But once they blew up, every record label was looking for a band with a grungy sound, and while there were some successful bands li!e Stone Temple Pilots and Smashing Pumpkins, the rest of them were either copycats or wannabe stars that weren't nearly as good.
