they really are the most amazing bunch of musicians. think about it. opening song: Half Full Glass of wine. Jay on bass, Kevin on drums, Dom on guitar. mixing it up from Kevin on guitar, Jay on drums, Dom on bass.. how the other songs were played that gig. then the following year Nick joins as second guitarist. they play as a 4 piece, then Innerspeaker is released and Dom & Nick swap instruments. now Nick is bass player, Dom second guitarist. next album comes out; Julien joins to play drums and the drummer (whos already played guitar & bass in the band) Jay is moved to keyboard. next album comes out (Currents) and long serving guitarist (who was the original bass player) Dom is now moved to keyboard! MEANWHILE.... in this 5 years period of 2008-2013, Jay & Nick have made 5 albums with Pond, with Kevin drumming on one of them. Mink Mussel Creek - featuring Kevin on drums, and Nick on vocals / guitar have recorded a stellar debut not once but twice in 2008 and 2011 respectively... Nick & Cam recorded an album together in 2011... and Jay has released FIVE solo albums under the name of GUM. what. the. faarrk.
Charlie Read Clarke Currents is horrific? Dude, that album has grossed more money for Kevin than any other and has gotten so many awards and nominated for more. Far from horrific.
Gabriel Medeiros Yeah, but Miley had a platform to start on. Kevin started from the bottom up. She was born into fame because of her dad. Then she got to Disney and now she’s where she’s at now. Apples to Oranges.
Parker has transformed this into a sensational experience all the way through, his music has always sounded so loving and beautiful, he really knows how to use pop melodies and be sentimental and moving
it was a sensational experience seeing them in 2008-2012! the audio might be less than great... but we loved seeing them live back then. look at Kevin playing from 4:40 on... thats a man in his element. expressing himself on the instrument he was born to play. he's always been a drummer, from day one
Keith Moon was overrated and sloppy. Mitchell Mitchell was awesome, but Kevin has a different style. Although, yes, there is a old-school 60'a style is Kevin's playing.
@@RMoocher I like your comments man, you're on the ball. I think Kevin has the Bonzo about him. he likes the straight up 4/4 with a bit of groove. Kev has to hit the saturation inside the DAW to get to Bonzo.. but thats the era we live in

@@RMoocher I feel like Kevin's drumming sounded generic compared to the likes of John Bonham and Mitch Mitchell. He uses a similar style of fills. At least on his lonerism and Innerspeaker stuff anyways.
Currents is his best work, how can you make serotonin filled pop music sound so psychedelic and musical? I thought it was shit at first but then I got to the looping part of let it happen and it felt like I was on acid. Kevin is a genius
It’s a good album. Just not a great one. Kevin Parker has made great albums before. Innerspeaker and Lonerism are great Tame Impala albums. Kevin Parker-produced Melody Echo Chamber LP is better. Currents just isn’t all that interesting in comparison.
Currents is junk compared to this early stuff. Innerspeaker is his best. But hey, he is doing what he wants to do. If he got sick of playing great shoegaze psych music and now he plays electro beat falsetto singing trendy junk, hey more power to him, he's making money and doing what he wants, but i'm not listening.
@@robnillan2514 Yeah Innerspeaker low-fi stoner psychodelic sound is my favourite too, but Currents explored similar themes with electronic sounds and I found that awesome. The one that followed (can't even remember the name 😁) was meeeeh. Pond is my favourite Perth band now
At 34:45, one of my favorites. Plus, in this song, this is for me THE ultimate and eternal TI combo / setup: those four, no more, no less. Parker, Allbrook, Simper and Watson, that's it. Nota:Nick Allbrook is sorely missed on bass (but Pond won a frontman).
Thanks very much to the OP for posting. This should have 6-figure total views and be an essential-collection video for them. Yes, they're changing, and I can't help but be reminded of early R.E.M. (which may be too old a reference for many TI fans) Chronic Town -------> TI self-titled EP Murmur --------> Innerspeaker Reckoning ---------> Lonerism Fables of the Reconstruction ---------> Currents Life's Rich Pageant -----------> ??? Eeerie how it lines up, quality-wise and career-wise. Fables was a turning point and not in the best of ways, but at that point in their career they could tour globally and play to midsize halls. R.E.M. went on after Fables to make a lot of good music and even had their biggest commercial hits afterward, but stylistically it was never the same and they never put out anything afterward that was in the same line as the first 3 records, much as the early fans wished they could/would. Fables was a half-and-half transition. Again, so far eerily similar. I think "Elephant" may have been the snake in the garden of Eden. Though Kevin did say it paid for half his house. "Currents" showed he's plenty talented enough to write pop songs (as was REM), but we knew that. The real gift-that-keeps-on-giving are the records that can be played over and over with a new thing coming out each listen, and that's how you can build a fan base even in the absence of new material like TI has been doing. 2019 could be a pivotal year, though. I'm not sure 2 new songs and a static setlist will be enough to wow the hordes of new fans.
As a fan of Kevin and Tame, i'm glad he doesn't sound this rough anymore lmao. His voice is all over the place in the early years of Tame. Lonerism if my fave, but Kevin has never disappointed with delivering a solid album. People just gotta stop being boomers about his change in style. If it ain't your type of music then that's totally fine, just no need to yell at a cloud about it.
That's because he uses autotune now, I respect that. But maybe kevin could make that sound less apparent when he plays his older stuff, so it sounds more akin to what it sounded like on his older albums. I think kevin even used some sort of pitch correction while recording the albums anyways. I love his newer stuff, but favour Lonerism.
Currents is one of those albums like Rumors by Fleetwood Mac or Remain In Light by The Talking Heads that will last forever. People just don't like when artists do new stuff. That's why Animal Collective is my favorite band, every album is a switch in the style and no two albums will ever sound the same.
"Lonerism" is the Tame album that will last forever. the peak in Kevin's crown. its got nothing to do with artists doing new stuff. change & growth is great. writing boring synth pop that Rihanna covers is simply boring music. do yourself a favour and watch this video here at the 10 minute mark...
