I bought an older Craftsman (Murray) 8-26 snowblower. It had a carb problem, but I bought a new one, adjusted it and it runs great. Today I lost auger drive, and--not having a manual for this year--I turned to the Internet. I watched the first third of this video and found the problem. Auger belt. Did a little digging and found a replacement. Two day shipping, and I should be back to snowblowing in no time. I watched the rest of the video to see if I'd have any trouble with the install. Nope. Looks easy peasy. Thanks for taking the time to help your fellow man with these dad blamed fancy snow machines. Much appreciated, amigo.

Wow , A-1 job , my prob. is getting the front belt off , I have the same machine and the width area that I have to squeeze the belt by is just so small even when the pulley is loosened . I basically have to SQUEEZE the belt by this area thinking I'm just going to damage the belt . Is there something I can do to get by this dilemma ? Your video is such that I couldn't improve on it in any way , in fact it's probably one of thee best out there , your clear , the video you take is clear viewing etc . You just make it look so darn easy . LOL Thank you so much . 👌👍🤠
Sometimes you can clamp the transmission drive handle down up at the handle bar. This will make the transmission drive pulley move back a little. Then you can slide the belt through. If that doesn’t work, I’m pretty sure you can split the machine in half if needed.
super helpful. appreciate this video. my auger wont turn right away it takes a good few seconds to start spinning and get up to speed so i'm guessing i need a new belt
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines yea it seems like the belt is fine but when I press the auger its just not pulling enough to get the tension. The pulley is spinning but the belt won’t. Why would it just not have enough tension all the sudden?
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines so even if I have tension on the belt and both belts spin the auger still barely spins. The second stage spins as I turn the motor but the main auger doesn’t want to spin at the same rate. Is that junction in the middle like a clutch that can go bad?
That is normal. The rear auger spins extremely fast to be able to throw the snow and the augers in the front slowly pull the snow into the second stage.
Great video my friend I have a Mastercraft 10.5 horse 30 inch model 31AE5B3H515 has 3 belts though its 2 stage try to figure out the proper belt appears is the Auger that snapped Manual doesn't tell me lol fun times ahead Again well done
I think I’ve only come across a three belt system maybe once in 30 years. We don’t get much snow where I live. I hope all goes well. Thank you for watching and the kind comment.
Hi Justin, I am back to working as you can see but I am working from two different locations at the moment and I must be careful what I put into videos. I am just using the shop in Modena for tractors and working on generators and snow throwers at another location. I have a plan in the works but cannot say on the internet at this time. If you want I can give you a call to discuss?
Great video! What's the name of the little guy making sure the auger belt doesn't come off? I'm exactly looking for this solution on my old yardworks 10.5hp. Thank you!
If your talking about the metal belt guide at 2:32? It's just a guide. Newer machines use the belt guard as the guide to keep the belt on. Always use the machine with the belt cover in place. Please give this video a thumbs up to help my channel. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for the comment and for watching!
You will need to take the model number off of the sticker behind the machine, then go to Sears Parts Direct online to look up the correct belt number for your machine. Here is the link to sears parts direct. www.searspartsdirect.com/
Hey i know you answer comments so ill try my shot ! I have pretty much the same machine but its a 11/36 it looks similar but im not sure, its the first time ill do this job so im a bit nervous
I can’t tell you it’s the same because I do not remember from one to another but I can say, you should at least try it! Make sure you have the correct belts before performing the job then try it! You will most likely will get the job done and if you don’t at least you tried!
sorry to bother you, but what would be the best or even good battery charger for my lawn tractor? Cub Cadet XT1 42 inch cut. I only need it once a year or so and don't want to pay a lot for it. If you have any good ideas I would appreciate it. Thank you!
Check out harbor freight if you have one around you. There chargers are good price. Just make sure it is analog and not digital. You may be able to purchase a cheap charger at a Walmart type of store also.
Hi Johnson, i have a craftsman just like this but it’s grey and has a Honda GX160 engine swap on it. I’ve noticed lately that when i pull the lever to engage the auger and impeller, it’s making a clunking scrappy noise on engagement, then it goes away, is that normal? If not what’s causing it. Thanks
It is impossible to diagnose issues over the Internet without seeing machine. I would suggest taking the cover off the auger belt so you can see the pulley to the impeller. Then have somebody stand behind the machine and run the auger so you can see the belt and the impeller pulley moving to see if it may be bent or rubbing against something. Also check the front augers to see if they’re bent or rubbing against some thing. It could be many other things but that just comes to mind first. Check to make sure things are running smoothly and not bent.
Hey so this video is great but I have a nearly identical craftsman model 536.88 and when trying to put the new belt in there's a long horizontal spring that's making it difficult to put the auger belt in behind the large bottom pully. Do you have any tips?
My guess is, If your auger doesn’t stop turning when you let go of the auger engagement handle. Either the auger cable or pulley is adjusted too much. Or if you installed a new belt , you may have the incorrect belt size? Or did not use a OEM belt. (Original equipment manufacturer)
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines i did install a factory belt, loosened both the auger pulley and cable. The only other thing I can think of is the spring is no good.
If it is a adjustable carburetor this link will work ua-cam.com/video/tp3dzU1GdXI/v-deo.html If it is a non adjustable carburetor, I will need to make a video on how to. Let me know which one you have.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Mine isn't adjustable I used my 1/2in ratchet and socket to remove my bowl I cleaned it real good and I took a small needle and cleaned my bowl nut it wasn't clogged now I have to clean the rest
Take out the small jet on the side of the carburetor and clean also a hole is in the tip of the jet. The jet maybe covered by a cap that you will need to take off. Make sure your needle valve is clear and make sure you check the float height like in the video I sent you. If you can’t get your machine running properly, let me know and I will make a video on your carburetor.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines It's my first time taking it apart I just clean my bowl and and bowl and they're clean teach me how to clean my carburetor on my Craftsman 9hp Tecumseh it's non adjustable and I'm Brendon
My transmission pulley just fell off probably from vibrations and the I can't see the pin for it and couple of nuts and bolts were on the pan. Have no idea how to put it back.
I would suggest to find a online PDF parts breakdown or possible a owners manual to look at that may have a picture of the drive pulley plate positioning or just keep on searching and your bound to get a view of how it is. I would need to see the machine tpo be able to see exactly how it goes. The machine in the video was a customers and it is not here any longer so I cannot pull it apart and take a pic or vid.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines thanks for the reply. The shaft actually pulled itself in so I had to hammer that bearing thingy with a socket so I could fit the pulley. It's probably gonna fall off again cuz I don't have a pin...
just bought a belt and I guessing it is too short! I got the snowblower with no belt on it. got it on and moved the idler pulley back to the furthest position. auger turns when it is running. ugh....
Hi Josh, make sure you use the model number on the machines sticker, then go to sears parts direct online to look up the correct part for your machine. I would suggest using the OEM "original equipment manufacturer" belt so you know you are getting the correct size. Plus they will last longer.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I have the same exact machine as the one in the video. that is probably where I went wrong. I just typed in the belt number that you had in the video and bought the first one that popped up. on sears parts direct it calls that belt a transmission belt. does that sound right?
If the auger is not spinning then you need the auger belt. If the transmission is not working then you’ll need the transmission belt. Sometimes they can be confusing looking at the parts look up. Do you need the belt that is closest to the auger barrel.

super helpful. appreciate this video. my auger wont turn right away it takes a good few seconds to start spinning and get up to speed so i'm guessing i need a new belt
Or at least it needs adjusting. You will need to look into it.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines yea it seems like the belt is fine but when I press the auger its just not pulling enough to get the tension. The pulley is spinning but the belt won’t. Why would it just not have enough tension all the sudden?
The belt will stretch under a heavy load. Just adjust it. I’m pretty sure the video will show you how to adjust it.
Great video my friend
I have a Mastercraft 10.5 horse 30 inch model 31AE5B3H515 has 3 belts though its 2 stage try to figure out the proper belt appears is the Auger that snapped
Manual doesn't tell me lol
fun times ahead
Again well done
I think I’ve only come across a three belt system maybe once in 30 years. We don’t get much snow where I live. I hope all goes well. Thank you for watching and the kind comment.
I don’t have anywhere as much of a gap at the bottom pulley to get the belt off. And I have released the brake
When you get some time please update us on your progress Brad; thanks!
Yeah what he said.. LOL
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Got it; just making sure you're OK!
Trying my best to get out of Modena and I hope to be by early spring if all works out but need to do what I need to do to get by.
Thank you for the comment and for watching!
loved your vidéo ,thanks a lot ,what size would be that belt
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines it looks like its pretty much the same thing ! Thank you ill do it this week end cause winter is coming lol
Ok, Let me know how you make out.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines yes will do my friend
sorry to bother you, but what would be the best or even good battery charger for my lawn tractor?
Remove spring, Install belt, Re-install spring.
how do you adjust the brake on this? My brake doesnt engage enough to stop the auger causing my belt to smoke
Brad how you clean the carburetor on a Craftsman Tecumseh 9 hp 28" clearing path snowblower
I find it best to get a new carb. 15$-20$ and you are good for years .
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines oh wait apparently it was ereplacement parts I looked at
If the auger is not spinning then you need the auger belt. If the transmission is not working then you’ll need the transmission belt. Sometimes they can be confusing looking at the parts look up. Do you need the belt that is closest to the auger barrel.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines yes definitly the auger belt
What if the bottom spring is missing ?
Hi Thomas, I would remove the bottom pan and see if the broken one was sitting below, remove old spring and order a new one online.
Could it be the belt causing the auger not to spin at all.
Yep, take your cover off and look at the belt to check.
I'm having such an issue, I pray it's not the gear box because that's to far for me. The shear pins are intact
It was the belt!! Where can I order same 9hp craftsman that you got.!!
You need to take the model number and call your local lawn mower shop to get you the correct belt for your machine.
Put new belt on my snowblower belt is smoking
