Just so you know, this is actually the June Illumicrate box and the theme is "I Will Fly"! The May box will begin shipping from June 27; this box was delayed because the May book was changed a few months back due to the original author's bad behavior, so it took additional time for the new book to be prepared :)
I get why authors wouldn't want to sign thousands of books for Fairyloot. Not sure how big Owlcrate or Illumicrate is in terms of subscriptions but i know FL has more than 10K. It is nice to get a signed edition from them though, but I'm fine with digital. But yeah Owlcrate being consistent with it is really nice. I love that Owlcrate redesigns so much, it makes it really special, and I wasn't a big fan of the original cover for this book but Illumicrate did so well with te color change, it makes it so pretty! And the naked hardback is perfection. Usually I'm team Owlcrate but this month, I think Illumicrate won. 💡
The signings are ultimately up to what the author is comfortable with and what wiggle room that had in the license/contract for the book box which makes sense.
While I like Owlcrate design the best, I think Illumicrate's version of the cover is better than the original (original is very colourfull, which feels a bit overwhelming. Here it's limited colours which looks perfect). I managed to order Owlcrate's version (somehow they had no waitlist???) Edit: well, I spoke too soon! The hardcover of Illumicrate is stunning!
So tough! I love Illumicrate dust jacket and sprayed edges, but I don't like their endpapers. Owlcrate's reversible dust jacket has better artwork in my opinion... I can't decide.
Illumicrate won by those edges alone! Owlcrate's is nice (I have that copy too) but overall Illumicrate's cover is nicer and more detailed. Think the shape of the book is due to the designed edges because the few times OC has done it, they turn out a bit heavier and taller than just the sprayed edges.
Team Real here too. I will say I get author's being reluctant to sign 10,000s of books but I think Fairyloot's just using that as an excuse. Especially since they don't lower the price for digital signatures!
I love the edges on the illumicrate but the cover and artwork on the owlcrate is pretty to me. I find digital signatures to be a waste of time/space. I'm totally fine if a book isn't signed (for whatever reason, it doesn't matter to me), but if it is then I want it pen signed. There is literally no point to a digital signature to me.

The book boxes can’t decide about the signatures, sometimes authors have chronic illnesses or disabilities that don’t allow them to hand sign.

I skipped Illumicrate in favor of Owl Crate this month and I have regrets. The OC is beautiful, but those edges on Illumicrate. Wow!
