We Explored the Abandoned Shipwrecks off the Coast of England | Isles of Scilly

- There are hundreds of wrecks around the Isles of Scilly, a site with one of the highest concentrations of wrecks in the UK. Dan Snow joins professional yachtsman and adventurer Conrad Humphreys as they tour the beautiful, rugged Isles of Scilly, on the wave-lashed shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
In the first episode, Dan and Conrad navigate the ancient history of this remote archipelago on the edge of Britain, discovering burial mounds built thousands of years ago, and an Iron Age village that thrived here when the Romans ruled Europe. Sailing in Conrad’s beautiful replica 18th century boat, “Bounty’s End”, they weave their way through a wonderland of history and legend.
In the second episode, the intrepid pair navigate through these notoriously treacherous waters to investigate stories of shipwrecks and an infamous maritime disaster that changed the history of navigation and unlocked the secrets of longitude!
In the third and final episode, Dan and Conrad conclude their epic expedition around the Isles of Scilly exploring the impressive defences that line the islands’ coastlines that made them almost impregnable - guarding the Atlantic approaches.
For hundreds of years, military planners have recognised the strategic importance of the Isles of Scilly. The island’s position at the crossroads of several important sea routes made them a vital asset for Britain.

New bucket list entry unlocked: Transparent Kayaking trip around the Isles of Scilly.
Thanks History Hit, amazing content as ever....literally inspiring stuff.
Was thinking the same! Perfect area for kayaking.
@yvindhidebarstad beware the tides!
Having navigated around & through the Isles of Scilly, I can say that the tides must not be ignored & the weather can be very changeable.
The Western Isles have similar sometimes terrifying pitfalls, although neither are to be missed!
@@pcka12 Thank you for the information. No wonder there are so many shipwrecks!
I'm Irish and didn't know about this place. Stunningly beautiful & the history is just jaw dropping.
I just have to say thank you for introducing this place to me.
Glad you enjoyed it
Once you go you'll be blown away. The place sparkles in the sun too, its truly incredible and plenty of people don't know about it
4 minutes of history and an hour of Dan snow talking about how great everything is.
That is one of the annoying things about this style of documentary. It is just is so sparse in its actual useful information.
Love the historical information you give us and the depth you go into for these productions. Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
Apart from the inaccurate England claim
This is Cornwall, the only thing English about it is the unlawfully occupation and looting of these lands @@HistoryHit
Fabulous documentary! The only thing not included, which I would have loved to see, was maybe SCUBA diving around some of the wrecks
Stay tuned....
This is awesome. One of the best I've ever seen. Thank you Dan.
And the replica boat is beautiful. Congratulations to the skilled ones who built it.
I can’t believe this guy keeps these amazing pieces of history in a GARDEN! Really dude?
Thanks!
Thank you so much for the donation Jamie! Hope you enjoyed the documentary.
Nothings beats a doc by Dan Snow
He's our history version of David Attenborough
The bounty was amazing. The story was very interesting. Thanks
Just had a squint at the start of this and o'course it's RIGHT up my alley. I shall look forward to watching this properly!
Nice one Dan and team. 🌟👍
Thank you for this video and information. It is as always, amazingly interesting. Love it.
Our pleasure!
Sadly, I was a Trinity House keeper and was involved in the automation. I've been on the rock many times; it's nice to see the old girl after many years,
This was a good one! Thanks!
Love seeing the pilot gigs. I wonder how much of the Bonnet has been repaired and replaced over the years, a strake here, a knee there, that frame that cracked when she hit a rock... Most old boats suffer from Triggers Broom syndrome, but they're still the same boat of course. Not that I'm complaining, I'm a boat builder.
Fantastic documentary. Thank you very, very much 😊
Wonderful program!
Nothing to do with title but truly beautiful!
Isn’t the U.K. gorgeous? ❤
Great doc, forwarded this straight to my Dad...he's from the Scillies and dived often as a young fella, we have a cannonball on our downstairs bathroom window-sill from one of the wrecks off of St Agnes!
Amazing! Hope he enjoys it
Superb episode. Really enjoyed it...
Great documentary. I've never heard of these islands before.
What a beautiful island ❤❤❤❤❤😮
Wow, this was great. Thank you. I'd love to spend a week or two here.
You should!
If you get a week of rain it will be the longest week you've ever spent. Otherwise the islands are wonderful
@@NeilBarratt Ha, I live in Newfoundland...we get a bit of rain! 😆
52: 36 haha while you two are just gabbing away my attention drifts to important & more facinating details of the lighthouse's roof structure.
It appears too be a helicopter pad!
How incredably efficient & wise.
Bravo.
Tresco is so beautiful, used to go there when I was younger. Beautiful place.
Oh man, I loved the Star Castle, I stayed there for a week in one of the turret rooms, stunning place to stay
Great work Dan ...the asteroid belt in Mariner terms❤
Very interesting and enjoyable video, but with a title "We Explored the Abandoned Shipwrecks..." I kept waiting to see the underwater video of shipwrecks being explored. Disappointed in that regard.
A wonderful watch,
to be sure.
Another awesome video 👍
Quality ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️
Thank you for the video. It looks like a great place to visit. Maybe someday!
Go visit!
As I watch this on a split screen, I use Google Maps or Earth to find out more. Great Documentary as always.
I have an almost identical photo taken in 2018 of the shot at 10:16 and about five photos from the place at 11:29 - I actually followed the coastal footpath all the way round the island and photographed all the archaeology I saw. I definitely did all those bits on Tresco...because I ended up late back to my ferry and almost got stuck, but a friendly skipper who was running back to St Mary's empty because of the very low tide gave me a lift back....very, very shallow down that channel.
Beautiful place,,,
Awesome 👌
Just casually showing off a 220+ year old piece of one of the most famous vessels to serve in the Royal Navy. Love it.
It looks like a beautiful place to relocate to
“No shipwrecks were used during the filming of this episode”
I flew there in my light aircraft its a amazing place
This video is awesome!
Thanks for the kind words!
Theres a passage tomb almost identical in the Cavan Burren geopark , amazing the similarities, these people must have travelled all over the British isles and Ireland
I would love to have a boat like “Bounties End” to explore the Coast of Britain.
* No shipwrecks were explored in the making of this documentary.
Gentleman! I think you need to invest in some polarized sunglasses.
Brilliant
thanks ..lookin' @ our west country...ooh arr aih..
Did Time Team ever do a 3 day dig on the Scillies? I can't recall one. Mind you, “From Ushant to Scilly 'tis thirty-five leagues”...
Odd, I was wondering the same! I vaguely recall a dig on similar land, but maybe it was somewhere in Wales or the Shetlands, Orkneys, etc.
The Time Team did a 'Special' on the wreck of HMS Colossus covering the discovery and lifting of one of the large statues that flanked the stern galleries of the ship.
They have not done anything on land on the islands..
34: 20 A minemal crew such as your did a good job clearing these reefs.
Today, you could highly benefit from a high end drone capable of repositioning itself in winds & maintain position above your boat looking down too cover the water hazards below you.
With an LED Viewscreen ( Ipad or Galaxy tsblet at your helm, such additions would be incredably useful too your task.
There does exist a drone capable of landing in water & taking off from water.
While in the water its useful in viewing below the water's surface with it's waterproof camera.
I've seen all this tech in modern day drones.
People using them to explore responsibly, instead of harrassimg one's nieghbors.
Love a lug rig
Did I miss it or was there no underwater footage?
55:57 the bird was a paid actor
They used clay infused heshan to stop cannon balls rolling out when targeting low. just fyi 😀
if it's under sea level but not that far beneath it, could the same approach as the Netherlands took to claiming land back from the sea be done here?
that small little alcove... looks more like a dog shelter to me. perfect size.
‘The islanders were powerless to assist…’
That, I’m afraid, is a drastic (and very knowing) re-writing of what actually happened.
Because as soon as they possibly could they swarmed out there, looting everything within reach.
A gold ring was hacked off the shipwrecked Admiral Shovell’s finger with a knife (or axe) - it’s not clear whether he was alive at the time.
Like all coastal communities back then, wrecking and/or looting was a way of life…
Also, chronometer is not a ‘posh’ word for a clock.
It was the description, 250 years ago, of a precision scientific instrument that could be accurate within seconds over extended periods of time, as opposed to a ‘clock’ that would be many hours (or more) inaccurate.
The Ships Chronometer revolutionised navigation, and also opened up ocean travel & trading, being responsible for saving untold thousands of lives…
It sounds like a pirate island. Not a good place to look for help in a storm.
Well said. Wrecking was prevalent, and the past should be acknowledged and not edited for the sensibilities of today's audience.
There were also rumours that he hanged a sailor who warned him that they were off course. They were never proved, though.
Apparently, From Ushant to Scilly 'tis thirty-four leagues.
Trade descriptions, where were the shipwrecks, did miss them somewhere in the programme?
Excellent work, great video. Please talk to the person using misleading titles. You have a known brand so there's no need to lie about the content. When you say We Explored the Abandoned Shipwrecks - there needs to be FU*KING shipwrecks.
"An island history like no other!"....errr as oppsed to what exactly? "An island with history exactly like another?". I did enjoy the vid though.
It's a damn good job the curator of that fortress doesn't insist on verisimilitude in the powder magazine extending to the barrels being filled with large red grain etc.. 🤣that would make visitors think..
A lovely film. That thar boat there, then. She's in need of a bit of a scrape here and there, she is. If she be built on teak, why then she needs a bit of a scrape, haaaaard sanding, and aaaaafter a pint of cider and a paaaaastie, she needs a special treatment, oh yes, and STRAIGHT AWAY, mind you, a thin wash coat o' nice varnish, then the very next day, a nice flowing coat, oo argh, of full fat Epiphanes, and so on, as much you can afforrrrd, just as long as you can save your money for your paaaaasties and your cider, and of course for Chresmass, oh yes. ✨🎄✨Nice one Dan and team! ⭐👍
Should have titled this one 40 minutes of rowboat racing.
What type of boat is the replica?
Isle of Silly? Do they do the silly walk there?
Let me know when you explore the un-abandoned shipwrecks. 😆
😢you can't beat natyre😢
have you documented any MANX history??
i'd love to see what you find out. from celts, vikings (oldest government still running in modern day) tourist haven, maritime significance (sir william hillary, smugglers, the star of india and the ellen vannin which wrecked in liverpool bay)... pleanty of castles , stone circles and 2000 shipwrecks at least.
burial sites and keeills (chapels)... the history is infinate.
The phrase "Abandoned Shipwrecks" is a tautology if ever there was one. What kind of a shipwreck is unabandoned?
Until we strike soundings
In the Channel of old England,
From Ushant to Scilly 'tis thirty-five leagues.
Are there any non-abandoned shipwrecks? Any with the crew still aboard, or inhabited by squatters? Or is this just a dumb title?
how do ship wrecks become barrows
on second thought, let's not go there. such a Scilly place.
What about the un-abandoned ones?
so, sea level rise without human industrial pollution. impossible.
Posting feet pics on the internet. Bravery.
My family did this there were lots of reasons why this worked was reasoning but unlike the rest of the so called developed world Great Britain took it one step further ( Moral reasoning ) look it up
1 hour and 20 minutes about supposed shipwrecks and they don't show a single one.
Abandoned shipwrecks?
Are there any unabandoned ship wrecks?
Dan Snow and more of his crappy videos.
Yeah not a bad presentation but definitely a deceptive title
yes thank you for the heads up. I live on the Namib Coast. also known for the Skeleton Coast. I fish on many of historical wreaks. fish with Rod and Reel. I do have a skiff, and "qoata"
Not a great historian tbh
Yes, I think they’ve been there so long they’re being silly
double adverts every 4 minutes ruins this video
This video simultaneously too silly but also NOT SILLY ENOUGH!!
How? is what we want to know? More taxes? we are well past believing politicians stick to their pledges, milestones, promise to the people what ever the word they choose to use it only ends the same way. More migration less living standards. I'm not blaming the migrants at all it is the goverment of britain wether that be labour conservatives or any other. some say reform will be different and maybe but I am 36 and from that experience of politics it really wouldn't surprise me if they turned out the same aswell, even with the best intentions.
It seems that having higher migration let's the gov borrow more because of the higher potential of tax from the migrants. We all know and have lived through it not working out that way but in my opinion as long as the goverment can't come up with fresh ideas to grow our economy that way they will keep on this rotation of artificially growing it through migration to keep boŕowing.
I don't know this to be 100% I really don't want it to be but I cant come up with another reason why they have let migration to unbelievable levels.
As long as there is way more demand than supply.living standards cannot improve surely?
1.5 million homes 5years migration for 1 year 1 million, how will this change anything for demand I don't understand it
u haf too be carfull cos most of a ship recks or hawnted by goosts n scarry n dat is dat rite

I hear more about looting than rescuing. I question the motives of the island people.
I'll bet that little boat of theirs has a little motor or an electric motor tucked away. Foolish not to, really
@joannad5374 You can't claim to have a historical replica of a vessel but have added modern technology. I understand your thinking but there is nowhere onboard to hide an outboard motor, which would need to be substantial to work with such a raised stern, & with any inboard engines, they wouldn't be making beached landings like they do, as the prop would take the burnt from the sea floor. The boat's owner, skipper, possibly even builder, is a world renowned sailor in the truest sense of the word, only ever using wind & sails for propulsion. I'd imagine that he'd have as low opinion of motors of any type on a boat as mariners of motor vessels (the category I fall into as a Merchant Navy engineer) have of yachts & sailing! This boat is also only a lifeboat, a short journey vessel that isn't designed for deep sea voyages, designed to be sailed or rowed, not designed for engine propulsion. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't sail across from the mainland but took the boat onto the ferry on a trailer, mainly because of the amount of filming equipment they'd need, there's obviously another boat being used by the film crew but logically they'd hire a local Scilly boat & skipper with local knowledge. Also, the crossing from British mainland to the Scilly Isles can be rough, so unless they had perfect weather for the crossing they wouldn't have risked it, not to mention having to row across if the wind drops!
@@mnicholl93 There is a black square on the transom that could be a bracket to mount an outboard, maybe a long shaft Seagull might fit? Would be bloody awkward trying to mount it and steer it, mind. I reckon they sailed it over either way - why would you not? Only a stoker in the Merch would come up with a hugely over-complicated alternative! :P
Definitely click bate. Very interesting but but unfortunately nothing about exploring one thousand ship wrecks.
What were those Bronze Age people doing to affect climate change to raise the sea level so munch?
Living at the tail end of 5he last ice age.
😂 all that smelting !
@@14caz68Oh no! I love smelts! Yummy little fishies, two or three bites apiece, go great with a serving of fries.

Yachtsman?? Are you kidding me? What about British politically correctness?? Should be yachtperson!! Please don't roast me, I'm joking
Shipwrecks what shipwrecks ? It should be labeled boring history like I give it down.
Let’s not go there. Tis a scilly place.
And what's the point of the shoe BS? Was this an effort to market to the foot fetish demographic? Eww! The camera person couldn't have delivered them from the chase boat? Maybe even by drone? Also, the need to row was belied by the flag on the boat. So ham handed. Trying to be slick and do too much, this could have been done so much better with very little additional effort or even much less and I look forward to some more thoughtful creators to do this subject justice.
Terrible documentarian no exploration of shipwrecks at all
Keeping the budget low. Still it is a interesting documentary.
You did not explore one shipwreck.
