Fantastic video Luke, I've never tried the layering spray but it looks like it works a treat. After you started messing up the second layer with your fingers I was thinking "Oh no....." but then you applied the third layer and I was like.... 😮 that's awesome!
@@GeekGamingScenics This is good to know because I'm wanting to create tall reed-type plants and wondered how to accomplish it. Looks like this method will work because it'll need to be tall. Thanks for the tips.
I made a static grass spreader by Luke Towan's video tutorial. It cost me a grand total of around $12. Between you two Lukes, my skills are growing. Cheers to you both!
I built Luke Towans applicator after watching his video. I don't think I spent more than £20 and I have enough bits left over to build another 5. The most expensive thing is the ion generator, that was £8. I used a 12volt transformer from an old wifi router for the power supply. The finish to the terrain is far superior to using flock I find. Thanks for your videos.
Only thing I would have asked for is a discussion about why you are pressing the end of the wire down into the glue. =) But you got a like from me nonetheless.
Luke tried your method for first time. It turned out awesome! Thank you for the assistance. The diorama for my grandfather’s tank unit turned out fantastic, but the new way you taught on this video stole the show. Thank you.
I can't tell you how informative your videos are, I've searched for tutorials and can't seem to find what I need and your videos cover EVERY single question I needed answering! Thanks for the vids!
Thank you for explaining the difference in the beginning of the video. Got a bolt action miniature that needs that grassy touch and this video helps. Have a fantastic day! ^_^
Great tutorial, straight forward with clear steps and the reason behind them. I love the pinching effect (I’m working on a muddy rough field diorama so that will be perfect to give that wild grass look). The only addition I made was in the tire ruts from the artillery piece I made in the sculptamold, I pressed some 12mm grass into the glue with vajello mud effect (I know there is smashed grass paint but that only looks good in a tiny patch in a tank tread or wheel) since this is supposed to be a hastily prepared firing location before they have to displace again
One source of the flock confusion is that it means different things to different hobbies. Static grass is known as nylon flock and there is a whole world of car interior modification that uses short (1mm or less) nylon flock to create suede effects on dashboards. Plus those who flock furniture like inside draws and jewellry boxes to create velvet textures. If you want bulk static grass there are companies who supply those hobbies selling in in kilograms in any useful length in a rainbow of pantone colours.
Very impressive terrain. I would've stopped after the 4mm flock and settle for that luscious green British moor. If you want dead-ass grass, come to Texas.
This looks really well done. I'm not sure why, but most other techniques I've seen started with long grass then edged it with shorter, and it always bothered me how it turned out. But your technique of starting with the shorter grass, plus your color combinations made a world of difference!
luke towen is amazing. by the way, i think you are pretty good too :) i love static grass and have a cheapo applicator, not too bad on 2mm and 4mm needs to work hard for 6mm
love your videos very informative and down to earth. I have watched 100's of videos and really like how u explain not just how but also why u use different products and how the process and results differ. Thanks, keep it up.
Got to admit the flock and static grass thing has confused me for a while. But think I’m going to order some different grasses and give this a go. Thanks for the inspiration. Autumn grass, summer grass and dead grass, check.
Just got everything ordered, looking forward to giving this a go. I think I’ll even upload a vid, to show how I get on. I haven’t ordered the applicator though as it’s my first attempt, so I’ll see how I get on.
Lukes Aps your right mate, so I’ve gone for the Micro. Hopefully it will all arrive for next weekend, so I can give it a whirl. Thank you very much for the sub as well. Now I need to start uploading more vids. Cheers.
Hi Luke. I have the large applicator and meshes. I purchased a shed load of different grass from them as well. But the grass came in very large reseal bags and it was all in tight round balls in the bags. An absolute nightmare to use. Takes forever to break it all up. Dont know if they screwed up or just dont care. Machine is great but the way the grass came was very bad. I had same problem with Layer spray bottle. I left the spray head in cold water for two days and it all cleared. Now I wash it every time. If the grass was not in tight balls, at least seperated, it would have been great. Love your videos always very helpful.
Prob a little damp still from manufacturer, transfer it into a plastic tub and give it a good shake, maybe put an agitator in like you would with acrylic paint. It's probably actually a bit better value for money being tightly packed instead of half a bag of air!
According to youtube subtitles, when you say "flock", you mean, "sexual intercourse"; this leads to more confusion. Those static grass applicators simply add to the confusion as they look like something from Westside's inventory. ;) Another great video. Thanks for sharing it.
Great vid Luke. Always informative about the different techniques and products. Keep up the great work. Also we're can we get one of those great looking shirts... Sean
The applicator is electric, the alligator clip creates a static current on the terrain, so that the grass stands up towards the applicator, instead of lying flat :)
It looks like you could do with an atomiser applicator such as a perfume bottle for the glue as it would create a much finer mist, prevent the spray moving the grass around.
Great video, I've been working on a diorama and i'm about to add some static grass so this was awesome to just refresh my mind on the subject. kinda curious, do you sell your static grass tufts to the U.S.?
I’ve seen a thing where people will use a vacuum cleaner on a low setting and put a thin sock over the sucking tube part so all the excess grass gets sucked onto the sock and doesn’t get lost
Currently building my first ever battlefield diorama for my dad for christmas and just have one question. Is it better to stick the soldiers/buildings down first then apply the grass or apply the grass first and then stick everything down??
So it's usually best after, otherwise you'd have some clumps and and bulges around them for the future, I hope you enjoyed building the diorama and your dad liked it, also hope your Christmas and new year were good
Hi Luke, thanks for your awesome videos! I’ve been hesitating to what applicator i want to buy. I saw that WWS now has a a new awesome detailer applicator that looks great so I’ve to choose between that one or the micro since I make small pieces usually. Have you used the detailer and which one would you choose? I have a flock box already but I realised that its not good to use for putting down grass on a slightly larger piece, more for flocking troops bases and making tufts.
Hi, there! I am very amateur in making static grass. Can you please tell me, how can apply the grass on small items? I have a clay rock and l want to make it look like it has moss on it. But were to l attach the aligator clip in order to have the static effect? 🤔If my clay item is placed on the metallic disk, will the effect be delivered?? Thank you in advance! 😊
Hi, better to use a flock box for that. It works a bit differently by the the static shooting up from the flat surface onto the thing you want to be flocked. It’s great to use for small things like that but not so good for a bigger board since you have to hold it upside down. Wws has one of those on sale, I bought mine of eBay from a different brand, works great! www.wwscenics.com/product/pro-grass-box-applicator-wws/

So I don’t know anything about modeling, but I do know stuff about electricity, so the point of the applicator is to charge the grass with reference to the model so it doesn’t fall off or blow away when you add the glue?
from what i've gathered you put the ground from the applicator on the base, and somehow or other the special 'grass' (i think made from nylon, generally) collects a static charge that, through voodoo magic, makes the strands vertical when applied to the glue that's already been spread.
I am doing a resin table and would love to use the static grass in it. It is a cross between a mountainous diorama and a resin river table. All will be coved in resin.
