wow, i had missed my Malt Mention! This is one of the biggest achievements of my life :) thanks Ralfy
Can’t agree with you more about not pouring things down the drain. Too many bourbon folks like to make a big fuss about things they don’t like over here and “drain pours” and such. So wasteful. It’s always good to have a point of reference to better appreciate the good stuff!
A mate of mine got a "Smoked" whisky. It was the worst whisky I've tried. He decided to use it for cooking instead of drinking.
Unfortunately Ralfy, I began my whisky journey with you, and was ruined from the start with presentations from Bunnahabhain, Ardbeg, Springbank, Clynelish and Glenfarclas. So true about NOT pouring "bad" whisky. A few months ago I opened an 80s bottling of Miltonduff 12yr. I gave it 3-4 tries but it just was not taking...however after setting it aside for some months, tried again with extra care (glass time, water drops etc.), it is fantastic! A lesson well-learned.
Never stop sharing stories like this, newcomers need to learn this! Great experience, I've had a few similar ones. Thank you for sharing.
“Top it off with a bit of Ardbeg”... I just did that with a, shall we say, less expensive blend. I was AMAZED at what the Ardbeg did. It turned a poor scotch bend into an enjoyable slightly peaty dram! Great guidance Ralfy! I raise my glass to you malt mate!
From my experience you can also get to know the distillery character from independent bottlers. Mortlach is a great example. Recently bought the 10yo from Douglas Laing's Provenance Series. Very little (single) cask influence, natural colour, non-chillfiltered, 46% vol. What a beast! Can't get that from a distillery version right now ;)
thanks for the review Ralfy! I haven't got into many independent bottling as of yet but I think that's about to change after seeing your recent videos. cheers!
Great video Ralfy eloquent as always
Ralfy, thank you for all you have done in the past years. I have been watching your videos for years. I really learnt a lot. But with your guidance over the years, we begin to be "too educated" with different kinds of whisky knowledge (which is a good thing). We certainly will keep on learning, with a humble mind. But even malts like Glenturret or Mannochmore can be within our radar now. We begin to appreciate most of the malts out there. I know you briefly mentioned the problem of budget in review 858 extra - Planning to Buy Whisky in 2021. However, how can we practically manage our budget and stop ourselves from buying one after another malts (even they are value-for-money and we can easily list out all the reasons why "It must be one of my collections!")? It may due to a 1st batch release that we should not miss out, like Ardnamurchan or Dornoch or Glenallachie Cask Strength. Perhaps it is a distillery that is going to be re-branded in a seemingly bad direction, so we need to keep a bottle of the old bottling with great quality, like Benriach or Glenturret or Balblair. May be it is a great collection that has been sadly discontinued, like Cadenhead Small Batch Collection (cask strength) is replaced by the 46% Original Collection. With the whisky knowledge, too many good malts, too little budget. Ralfy, what do we do?
. . . we do what we can and appreciate what we do. . . . and share the journey !
Someday I will share my collection with someone. 2020 Sucks!
But the whisky collection doesn't.
You should feel sorry for us in the US. Aside from the increase to 750ml we have real problems with availability and tariffs.
And then we are spoiled for choice with domestics. You want to talk about weird notes in a malt? These guys will try anything.
And then you have to dabble into corn and rye. There's just not enough space in my wisky room for all of it.
It was cute when it was just 12,13 & 14 year old scotch and wild turkey. I used to get 2 for $100. Everything I want this month is $135 per.
It's my pride and joy. I don't have many doubles or backups but it's a nice feeling to make that good decision.
@@ralfydotcom so true! There is never enough budget no matter how rich we are. I do exactly what you say and enjoy my only few bottles many years ago when I could only afforded so and never get too excited now when I can get access to many precious rare malts. life is a journey so along our whisky adventure.
I appreciate the scolding. Classic Ralfy.
I have to admit. Carn Mor is bringing out some good stuff. The 6 year old Ben Nevis Sherrry and 8 year old Caol ila being outstanding in my view.
Thanks for yet another interesting review. I recently bought a Carn Mor Linkwood, whilst it is very nice it's nothing like the official distillery bottling I remember.
00:00 love the way you say hi at the start, Ralf 😀
I should not watch ralfy reviews before evening. Tempts me to indulgence. I'm sitting here with my fave malts nearby and yesterday was my 'no whisky day'. 5 o'clock can not come soon enough!
There is too many delicious whisky cocktails to pour bad whisky down the drain...
Thanks Ralfy. Maybe I will try a Carn Mor Whisky. A 10yo. Glentauchers from a First Fill Sherry caught my eye. For 50 quid not awfully expensive. I think I give it a go. I don't know what to expect, but what matters is what is in the glass.
I kept looking at your UA-cam award. Just glad it didn't catch fire 😂
. . . too wet to burn now.
Here in the North of the Netherlands we have plenty of Carn Mor....and Signatory G&M etc etc
. . . Good location for quality then.
@@ralfydotcom yes. It's heaven on "the independent bottlers world"!
Speaking of this IB, I recently managed to get a bottle of the Ben Nevis 6 yo (sherry cask, 47.5%) from their latest outturn, and it is absolutely delicious!
Thanks Ralfy. The only Mortlach I have had was an Alexander Murray bottling and I couldn't warm to the band-aid character, even though I have liked several peated whiskies. Sounds like this Carn Mor version might be something more interesting and I really liked their Ben Nevis 6yr! Cheers!
If you ever see a bottle of Alexander Murray 1989 Mortlach 22yo, it's good stuff. Costco was selling it 7 or 8 years ago for $49 and it was a heck of a bargain at that price. At 40% ABV it was a bit bland upon first opening the bottle, but I found that it improved greatly after a few weeks. No peat that I could detect, just Mortlach's signature flavor and character aged in very decent oak.
Their most recent burgie was similar in that it wasn't quite the right fit for its sherry jacket.
I am like Clive, I prefer the Cheap brands- I hate Bells though- it has a horrible taste. I do enjoy listening to you passing on your knowledge though.
Slap slap, got me chuckling
Hi Ralfy, what an excellent review. May I especially commend you for your jovial rebuke about discarding a negative bottle. Bear in mind that Atholl Brose ice cream is better and better for the upper low quality whisky not chosen to drink.

Hello Ralfy - this journey through independant bottlings has been insightful and quite enjoyable. I was wondering, on a separate note, when your 2nd book will be available again? I narrowly missed the first Amazon sales.
. . . first edition version now on sale at Amazon.
@@ralfydotcom Lovely! Purchased :-)
Hi Ralfy, the contrary happened to Me with Caol ila the independent bottle was much better than the original. I think it was a gordan & mcphail. Had the independent bottle first and was disappointed from the Original.
Heh I've always been suspicious of these too dark sherry matured indy bottles like this one, few distillates (if any) are assertive enough to survive that amount of cask influence, and there you go, seems like even Mortlach can be drowned in sherry. Can be fun to keep coming back to a dram like that and try to spot the remaining distillate notes though.
10:15 Great advice.
I'd never go so far as to throw away drink, not even my homebrew I used to make. And that tasted like what goblins would drink deep, deep underground in caves!
Wondering about this one. Thanks Ralfy!
I have real trouble finishing my glengarioch 15 Sherry... Everybody loves it, but I just can't drink it.
Today I learned that I have to mix it with ardbeg... We will see :) :) :)
Hi Ralfy. Regarding the previous casks that the whisky may or may not have been in, I've been wondering if there isn't a way in some cases that you can see whether or not it's been in more than one cask on the label. I've had two official distillery single cask bottlings done through a specialist retailer recently, and with the one they specified which cask it was bottled from, of course, but I seriously doubt that it was only in that one cask (PX) for its entirety. That bottle was labelled as a "cask bottling" on the label. Then there is another one where they specified that it spent the entire maturation period in one first fill bourbon barrel, and it definitely looks and tastes like it. That one is labeled "single cask". Like you said, the bottler / distillery are not obligated to tell you, and I'm not saying that this is a regulation or a rule when it comes to labeling, but could it be that at least some bottlers or retailers adhere to this "rule of thumb", i.e. labeling it as "cask bottling" or "single cask"?
. . . it's a 'variable' area of maturation practice.
49 euros in The Netherlands.....might try it.
Glenfarclas 12 i had for this video. A delicious malt moment by the way
Ralfy, behind you in the back I see you have written a new book. Is it available somewhere ? I loved the first one.
. . . on sale now at Amazon. It's self-published so not yet in book shops.
Machiavellian Malt Masters of Mount Malta
. . . now on the M-mention List, thanks !
Why do you put a lid on the glass? Why not just leave it open for more air?
. . . stop evaporation.
Ralfy why do you cover the glass? Isn't be better to keep it uncovered to let the Whisky to breathe?
. . . breathe, yes, . . . evaporate, no.
Ralfy, any plans to review Kilkerran 16?
. . . too hard now to buy a bottle !
@@ralfydotcom You were rather lucky to get one of these new carn mor's they sell out like hot cakes recently - with good reason too!
@@Narses3 This bottle is still available in UK retail, just! Try and find shops with little to no online presence ; )
R as you said I never wasted whiskey and I don't like too. Do.. Can you please. Review j and b rare. Blended scotch
❤️👍🥃
Ralfy,
I have to ask ?
How is Gef the talking Mongoose?
And what is Gef's favorite whiskey?
Please , share the Isle of Man legend of Gef.
. . . Gef is fine, he/she loves mongoosejuice !
@@ralfydotcom
Tonight after a good dinner , I'll rase a glass of Tyrconnell 16 to the little cuss.
You should tell the tail , over a nice sipper .
Being an Isle of Man story not heard of in the States . Would make for a fun side note.
🙂☕👍
I have been following your channel for several years, You are constantly AWESOME!!!! 😁☕👍 I also have purchased your book 🙂
Interesting, had two Carn mor s: Caol Ila 7 years and Laphroaig 7... both great whiskies, and available
. . . intresting age statements, sounds like fresh zesty malts.
Never ever ever pour down the sink. Lesson #1. ☺
Pouring bad whisky down the drain... How consumerist! I figure that's what consumers do 😁
213th!
The only bottle I've ever poured down the drain was a Dalmore 15, awful stuff and no good for anything... and Ralfy you can call me a naughty boy, spank me as much as you like... I have no remorse!
. . . naughty ! ;)
buying it was the naughty bit
Pouring it down the drain is alcohol abuse
I bought a bottle of Buffalo trace because it was on offer, i really don't like it, might pour it down the sink 🤔🤢
That’s nuts. There is no reason why you can’t make old fashioned cocktails out of it. I’ve had fantastic Buffalo Trace store picks and I’ve had so-so Buffalo Trace bottles. None of them were close to being candidates to pour down the sink.
@@scottyblog Yeah i was thinking about cocktails, not something i usually drink. Beats wasting it, its just far too sweet for me
@@gav25x I love Buffalo Trace...all the whiskys they make are tasty. The mash bill they use is my favourite of all the bourbons I have had. I've had everything they make and liked it, but it does not have to be everyone's cup of tea. I'm kind of that way with Jim Beam whisky...just does not suit me. Cheers on the cocktails! 🥃
@@AndyCigars I'm judging it on a neck pour, I'll persevere with it, i wasn't that struck on the Makers mark either but it got better over time
@@gav25x Best of luck with it. Let us malt mates know how it goes.
First
It all ends up in the drain, anyway. Save yourself the bad experience. Life is short. Dump it.
Save the Ardbeg10...use Laph10. .
Put them back in the tube, in the back of the cabinet and when you try it again it'll be a different thing.
