  • Of all ride systems developed by Disney Imagineers, the Omnimover is the most influential and evocative. It changed the way designers built rides, and gave them extraordinary new control over the ride experience. Join us as we take a deep dive into the history of the Omnimover's development, and its evolution over the second half of the 20th century.

Another Notable Ride System, very similar to Journey into Imaginations, is Tomb Blasters at Chessington. It opened back in 1987 as the 5th Dimension, and the ride system can just like Journey into Imagination, stop at the loading station and rotate, but it can stop at individual scenes with the cars facing them. To this day its the only system of its kind, and its quite brilliant!

At some point in the late Before Days, they were talking about a Mary Poppins IP dark ride for Epcot and I got to imagineering up an 'omni-mover 2000' with a third control rail giving lift, pitch and roll control with rotation on a motor. The ride vehicle would be a period gasoline automobile with sightline controlling roof. If I was in charge. I also want a Star Wars Death Star with a dark roller coaster inside. Dueling X-wing V Tie Fighter meets Space Mtn?

I’m not sure whether or not it came before or after Ariel’s under sea adventure, but the Nemo and Friend’s ride at the Sea Pavilion in Epcot should also be mentioned. I believe those vehicles are shells like the Little Mermaid attraction

The "Clamobiles" in The Seas with Nemo & Friends do indeed pre-date the Little Mermaid rides in DCA and Magic Kingdom by about 5 years. The main reason we didn't mention them in the episode - aside from time and flow of information - is that, as far as we could find, the underlying Omnimover ride system from The Living Seas was unchanged (or, at least, didn't do anything new with the system that wasn't already on other Omnimover rides). That said, the original vehicles in The Living Seas didn't rotate the way the new Clamobiles do, and they did extend the track, so it's not like they didn't alter the ride significantly when they rethemed it.
By comparison, the rotation of the vehicles on the Little Mermaid attractions are controlled by a small motor within the vehicle, instead of the "guide rail" of traditional Omnimover attractions. That modification of the original Omnimover mechanism is the main reason why we mentioned them (and Buzz Lightyear's, which uses the same mechanism, but with rider control).
Also, it appears the cars are different between The Seas and Little Mermaid in other ways, too. The Seas' clams have a little gate along the front that opens and closes. The Little Mermaid clams are open on the side, and have a lap bar restraint. The sculpts between the two are also different, with the backs of the Little Mermaid clams being thinner than the "Clamobiles". That said, the paint job is very similar between The Seas and the Magic Kingdom version of Little Mermaid (so similar I had to go back and confirm they weren't the same sculpt, at least on the back part), but for the DCA version the cars are painted in a few different palettes, which really highlights the differences in how the sculpts shaped.
