The Nomad's Ger

- The nomadic people of Mongolia don't stay in one place for long. That's why they live in gers (which American's know by the Russian name, yurt), a home that is fast and easy to assemble and disassemble. Putting up a ger (pronounced gair) is fast and easy, but its best done by an entire family. This ger was moved by the family of Shagdarsuren Herelchuluun, on the east side of Lake Hovsgol, in northern Mongolia, not far from the Russian border.
The sound track of this video is music recorded at the Choijin Lama Temple Museum in Ulaanbator, the Mongolian capital.
For another example of throat singing, please see my other video from Mongolia. • Thoat Singing in Mongo...

Exemplary. They've lived like this for thousands of years. I recently built one and I have to say it has cut the rent to almost zero and sets up in an hour with a bit of practice. Also very warm and cheap to heat (the shape of it does that).
Awesome I think a nomadic life in Mongolia sounds so peaceful and simple. No face paced stressful life. I really would like to experience it....
@TheBabarules That music is hypnotic and fantastic.
Great video. Great music. Great portable housing unit.
It's quite windy in Mongolia, but the structure presents a pretty low profile and the wind tends to flow over and around it. The rounded shape helps, as does the fact that the door (and wall height) is a bit less than five feet high.)
The main difference between this ger and a winter one is a layer of felt insulation. But the ger is really a summer dwelling. Many of the people who live in gers in the summer, as they follow their flocks, move into wooden houses similar log cabins for the winter.
So that's how they do it! Very cool.
Fascinating how fast they can build. I am going in February I better get worm close.

I always wondered how these were put together. Thanks!
That was awesome. Thanks for sharing it.
@msggoodday I think the winter and summer houses are the same. They are pretty small so they don't have that much space to heat. They put rugs down on top of the ground.
@TheBabarules If they'd listen to Steve Tyler instead, the ger would have been blown away. This way of singing is called Khöömii.
@TheBabarules The music is Mongolian throat music.
Nice
@FloppyBishop I was only in Mongolia for three weeks so I'm not a ger expert. But I don't believe they have trouble with wind. The whole thing is pretty heavy.
Very, very cool:)
@FloppyBishop Traditionally gers aren't anchored, and they do very well in the high winds on the Gobi.
@DanGrossmanVideo That music is awesome! I've heard it before and have always been enchanted by it. Is there a name for that particular song? Can it be found on iTunes or on cd?

Plastic tarp and gasoline van. Very traditional indeed.
@Dobiecx I've posted some more throat singing on my video channel, in case you want to listen it and see a picture of the singer.
Paul King has written a book about it and also how to manufacture a Yurt.
"The complete Yurt Handbook"
Have a look at logicbooks
or at amazon
@pbjonesful I've posted some more throat singing on my video channel, in case you want to listen it and see a picture of the singer.
@rreida18 I don't know who performed the song, but I've posted some more throat singing on my video channel, in case you want to listen it and see a picture of the singer.
@389293912 The pre-modern version was probably thick cloth rubbed with oil or fat.
@Serai3 I've posted some more throat singing on my video channel, in case you want to listen it and see a picture of the singer.
What is that song playing there? It's so so beautiful
I think it's a sped up version of Khusugtun Batzorig - Chinggis Khaan
災害時の仮設住宅にもいいんじゃないか!?
I ain't complaining about the dishes again lol
maryam
It didn't appear to be anchored to the ground in any way. I wonder how well they would perform in high winds.
سبحان الله .. شي حلو
OOoooooAAAaaaa that waaaaaascally waaaaabbbiiiiiiit
Great time lapse video - thank you. What did they put down for the floor? and then slept on?
1. What do they do with the floor? Leave it as grass? Rugs?
2. Was this the summer house? Is the winter ger different as far as insulation goes?
This was fascinating. Thank you.
Joanna
This is temporary, I don’t see the main part of ger, felt coverings
@DanGrossmanVideo Please listen to some other throat music I've posted.
@Dobiecx i know it's called throat singing, but that's all i know
Does anyone have any idea where I can find some other posted throat music? Perhaps on someone's video channel? I would really like to listen to some other throat music and see a picture of the singer.
Altan Urag and Husugtun are good bands for this genre.
