Your confusion at 02:22 is justfied, Nick, as Ashley Hill was one of two stations between Stapleton Road and Filton - but not Abbey Wood, back in the day. The other, named 'Horfield' after the then small village on the Gloucester Road-side half a mile away up the hill, eventually found itself surrounded by the 1950s council estate named Lockleaze, but never carried that name. The adjacent Filton Avenue estate continued in a straight line more or less, over and beyond the old City of Bristol boundary, across the new Filton By-Pass road before finally, curving up to the west to the back of Filton Parish Church, appropriately enough! Even as late as 1980 though, there was no development astride the railway lines to the south of that by-pass road; and Abbey Wood was just that - the name of one of the nearby woods! Almost hidden behind a block of low-rise flats at that time, and looking about as safe and welcoming as a long-abandoned mine shaft, was the subway entrance to the almost derelict remnants of what had once been a reasonably commodious station, with long platforms straddling all four lines just by the point that the two pairs meet: this was of course Filton Junction, which having lost most of its traffic - I'd imagine, to the then fairly new Bristol Parkway station; had also lost its platforms on that line and all of its buildings and canopies - much of which seemed to have been dumped at the far end of the subway, whose eastern-side entrance had also been blocked-off. It also appeared to have lost at least some of the length of the two remaining platforms that served a total of five trains on weekdays only - bank holidays excepted. And, in classic BR over-rationalised style, it was now known as plain Filton - no longer enjoying the status of a junction - even though it was still, in fact, a junction... Of the three northbound DMUs that stopped there at that time, one was shown in the public timetables as a cross-city service from Parson Street that terminated here whereas in fact, it continued around the singled curve that joined the by-now freight-only 'Henbury loop' (that actually continues to Avonmouth, where it joins the Severn Beach branch), as an unadvertised workers service (for British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce), actually terminating and at length reversing in the remaining down platform of the long-closed North Filton Platform! Thus, with the advent of Bristol Parkway there was for a time a station at each of the four points of the 'Stoke Gifford (double) triangle' to the north of Bristol. (Of the two public services that stopped at Filton, one continued through Patchway and stopped at the now long-closed platform at Pilning before terminating at Severn Tunnel Junction; and the other served Patchway only, in the final half-hour of the day!) As BR had failed in its efforts to close Filton station in time, the originally two-short platformed Filton Abbey Wood that straddled the Bristol Parkway and Gloucester - bound lines only, did not directly replace the old station as had been intended; but has since its late 1987 opening, effectively done so! Hi Nick, I really like new stations but what about the old stations, E.G Pilning, that could do with station lighting, a new platform and obviously it's footbridge back. If, in the unlikely event you find yourselves at Filton Abbey Wood ever again at this time of year and have time to spare, theres a huge amount of blackberry bushes on the cycle lane in the Filton Avenue direction (leave platform 1 and turn right).
Nice to see the new Ashley Down railway station now officially opened and I have to say that there will be more trains stopping there. Once the Henbury line that is a freight only line to be reused as a passenger line. And also not forgetting the Portishead line to reopen with new railway stations to be added as well.
Now time to wait for WECA to get around to getting Charfield station re opened. Would go a long way now the 84/85 bus to Yate was withdrawn there and would compliment the developments there nicely
The new Ashley Down railway station will also be used for football fans travelling to the Memorial Stadium which isn’t too far away from the new station. And GWR to run a new service from Bristol Temple Meads to Henbury and to Patchway. But I have to say that the new Ashley Down railway station is very nice.
Maybe for the next station opening you could couple it to a point to point, going between the newest station and the oldest station, which google says is Broad Green in Liverpool. Maybe you can turn it into 2 videos?
