Can you explain why steam ships switched from pistons to turbines?

    • @paulhorn2665

Efficiency and Speed. A turbine ship needs less fuel and is faster.

@@paulhorn2665 Why would they need less fuel if steam turbines need a much higher pressure?

@@aaronfield7899this does not work with coal, which has a low potential energy conversion rate, but, if you are burning a higher energy fuel (such as diesel) a turbine can convert more of the energy in output into kinetic energy... also, very often, the power of a turbine is higher than can be achieved in a piston (without the pistons being excessively worn), thus, multiple Piston powersets can be replaced by a single large turbine.... saving further on all the above parameters/
I believe, however, the more important benefit with the (modern) turbine, is that the system is lighter and smaller, that is, it takes up less hull volume than a normal Piston based system.

    *Who* caused the Halifax explosion?
In theory, the small ship cutting the path was the one to start the domino chain of the Halifax explosion, along with the tugboat. Although some fault is at the captain and the pilot of the Imo,
It is the tugboat and the other ship that started the chain reaction which lead to the Imo using the Northern lane. Some fault is also because the deck officers of the Imo decided to stay in the wrong lane when they blew their horn twice.
So, in conclusion both the crew of the Imo, tugboat, and other ship caused the Halifax explosion.
Edit: I forgot the Mont Blanc didn’t have the flag but I’m not gonna add that
If you think I’m wrong; you can reply but please use a respectful manner when replying.

I this truncated version, of the video, I learned the COMPLETE FACTS, on why this disaster unfolded!!! Every stitch and detail, other documentaries failed, to resonate. They mention the sub nets, but fail to detail. The SS Imo was halfway out of the water, and so was the rudder, which made it, less maneuverable. Those little facts, gel it all, together.

A tragedy. I only just realized the crew of the Mont Blanc abandoned ship rather than try to do anything about the impending disaster.
I'm not sure anything COULD'VE been done, but still. Not a great look.

    • @emerybonner7973
      @emerybonner7973 2 роки тому +3

There was not really anything the crew of the Mont Blanc could have done. They knew an explosion was going to happen but not when it would happen so they abandoned ship.
The Mont Blanc's crew did try to warn onlookers about the danger and to get away, but there were 2 issues.
      1. The crew were shouting in French, which unfortunately many onlookers did not understand.
      2. The smaller explosions made it hard to hear the crew shouting
Here is an interesting fact. The captain of the Mont Blanc did voice concerns to the New York port authorities that cramming the ship full of explosives was a bad idea. He knew that if the ship got hit, there would be a catastrophic explosion. However, the port authorities pretty much told him to shut up or the ship would not be allowed to leave port.
If the authorities had listened, the explosion might not have been as big or as deadly as it was.

I don't know that the name of the channel is going to change the subscription rate one way or another. I don't think the algorithm works like that. If anything, changing the name might decrease viewership among subscribers who don't recognize the new name.
