Riding the Sugar Express's Moore Haven Meteor! A Steam Powered Train Ride with US Sugar

- After railfanning and chasing USSC #148 many times, I finally took my chance to ride onboard one of excursions it offers as the Sugar Express, the Moore Haven Meteor. Join me as we take a 2 hour, 30 mile roundtrip ride from Clewiston to Moore Haven and return, as we enjoy the sights and sounds of the only mainline steam locomotive in Florida! Wow. Came aboard the Sugar Express. The Sugar Express is getting another steam locomotive with Atlantic Coast Line #1504. In the meantime for U.S. Sugar Express steam, we have #148.

Just noticed a small but interesting historical detail on the engine: the numbers on the side of the cab are raised, rather than painted on. While these appear to be fabricated from thick metal stock, originally they were cast. FEC's locos built before a certain date all used cast numbers, but later went to painted numbers. I do not remember when the change to painted numbers happened (some time in the 1930s, I think). Locos that had cast numbers eventually had them replaced with painted numbers.
So it's great to see an FEC Pacific restoration that included this detail!

This is awesome. We went through the Moore Haven Lock on our boat exactly one day before this filming. We had to wait for the train that day. You can see our trip #213 on our UA-cam channel 😎

The excursions start at clewiston florida, us sugar owns the 148 and the passenger cars.
148 is owned by U.S. Sugar, whose operations are based out of Clewiston, FL. Be sure to follow their Facebook page (Sugar Express) so you know when its next runs are!
Steam engines have to go slower in reverse as they're shoving a tender. I believe the average is 25mph on most railroads. They have better track so it's easier for higher speeds. Great video!
