I grew up in a row house on a very small street in North Philly. 2 stories (three BRs, 1 bath plus basement and small back yard. Probably built in early part of the 1900s or late1800s (it still had the original gas wall lamps). It seems to have much more room than this tall house. While the footprint may have been a bit longer and wider than this one, it accommodated 4 adults and a small child in about the same square footage. Also, not as many steps to climb. Kitchen, dining room and LV conveniently on the same floor. There was even a "summer kitchen" (an unheated small extension off the kitchen) for storage. To me it was a much cozier and practical layout.

I would prefer a stone tower especially a round shaped one to help against wind. Also, buildings in Europe include ones with the upper floors being wider than the ground floor which then helps provide space while providing room for pedestrians.
The position of the kitchen is very unfortunate. As someone who likes to cook I would have preferred the kitchen to be on one of the higher floors. One floor below the kitchen should be the master bedroom and one floor above should be the living room. Basement should be a gym, first floor should be a guest room, second floor should be study, third floor master bedroom, fourth floor kitchen, fifth floor living room, living room should be close to the roof because you would also want to take and entertain guests on the roof. Whenever I visit one of my friends in Philly, we all almost always end up at the roof for views.
I am a Philadelphian walking distance to the place. Fairmount North. it is expensive no matter what. that's just a trendy elitist future as per usual. I hope the future will be better than that meaning so everyone can have a place to call their own.

I love modern architecture and I love townhouses... but this is too many stairs and it seems claustrophobic. Can you imagine how much it would cost and how cramped it would feel. Like, the living room can't comfortably seat more than two people. It's a bit too narrow and it isn't deep enough. Like, if it went back further it wouldn't be as bad, but half of the house is the stairs. it's very pretty, but I could never live in it and it isn't even because I can't pay for it.
Not to mention what happens if, god forbid, you break/sprain an ankle. Most of your house is completely inaccessible. Just not practical. But just what I'd expect from a designer. The vision isn't polluted by pesky end-user needs.
Wait so are these just backyards to existing larger lots? Why are the lots so small, did they used to be alley homes or sheds prior to the deindustrialization era? Did the owner just split them into two separate areas to maximize profit? They seem to just accommodate parking pads. This has to be the ugliest house I've ever seen. There's no respect for the existing architectural culture of the neighborhood. The use of space is so inefficient. They tried to translate suburban style furniture and spacing into a row house. Everything about this house and this guy just screams fucking smug. It's so lifeless. All the hard surfaces and the openings by the window just make the house echo-y and loud.

A nice blend of density and history to keep the character. Keeping the same level of income while lowering housing costs by building tens of thousands of units goes a long way towards fighting gentrification. It’s impossible to actually keep things 100% the same. Nimbyism only makes gentrification stronger, because it turns land and space into premium assets and encourages luxury housing. Rent control and widespread, high density housing is the best way to have minimal change while keeping the city affordable for the working class. In other words, we need to Tokyo-ify the outskirts of our cities.

And we should build on downtown parking lots to restore vitality-again with affordable, hi rise public (not projects, but hi rises connected to the rest of the city, one wouldn’t be able to tell they’re public just by looking at it) housing that prioritizes downtown workers. Lots of Asian cities are dynamic and keep housing costs low. Japanese cities in particular do this while preserving history and the character of their neighborhoods. I’m not a fucking colonist.

This is nice for a young person. When you buy a home think 30 out will you be able to move up and down so many stairs.
