  • @angeloluviano5543
    @angeloluviano5543 7 років тому +115

    I honestly don't understand the issue here. I think the whole difficulty slider is hilarious and seeing people flip out about it confuses me. It's just a gag.
    But even beyond that I don't get the need to identify with the character you're playing as. I'm a Mexican and there's not that many Mexican characters that I know. That doesn't mean I can't feel invested in a caucasian or black character if they're well written and feel like real people. The only Mexican characters I know are bane and El fuerte and they're not really relatable or cool so whatever who cares

      I agree but you can't deny that when a character in a video game is, in your case, Mexican or with a Mexican background you get all excited, which is my guess to what Woolie was making a reference to. In all fairness is probably more difficult to relate to a character for people like me who don't pertain to an "exclusive" race. My mom is Mexican with Spanish parents, my dad is Filipino with a Japanese mother and I was born in America.

    • @angeloluviano5543
      @angeloluviano5543 7 років тому +17

      MrJ1GS4W No not necessarily. I get a sense of pride watching sports seeing a Mexican team play or a Mexican player on a team I'll always root for that guy because that's where my heart is. If I play a game like fifa or something like that my first instinct is to always play as Mexico that doesn't mean I exclusively play as or only them.
      Sports games excluded I have a hard time finding Latino protagonists and that doesn't bother me. I don't need the character I'm playing as to represent me at all. All I need is a character to invest in and sympathize with. For example I love Nathan Drake and he's the most white bread plain mother fucker there is. I'm nothing like him but I can still enjoy his story play the games and get invested in him. You find me one Italian that can relate to Mario
      At the end of the day video games are insane scenarios that can never conceivably happen. Thats the fun in them. I don't need everything to relate to me. Would I like to see more Latino characters? Sure as long as they're handled correctly and feel real. Does it bother me that there aren't more? No not really I don't they should be added just for the sake of diversity

    • @MrJ1GS4W
      @MrJ1GS4W 7 років тому +1

      angelo luviano but that's exactly my point it doesn't bother you but it's always fun to play as a Mexican character. I like playing as Mexican, spaniards, Japanese and Americans in FIFA in FIFA but that doesn't stop me from playing as Manchester United or Dortmund. I agree with you.

    Supposedly, those were all internal monologues he was having in the original Japanese version.

      That's fine but your playing through "their" story. In an rpg where you create a character it's "your" story, so it's totally fair for people to be bothered that they can't make the character as close to themselves as possible without effecting gameplay.

      lets be fair, even South Park cant just ignore the changing tide of rewards and consequences of social commentary.
      the days of Richard Pryor and George Carlin are unfortunately over, those two could tell you exactly what the fuck was wrong with the world and didnt have to take a neutral stance in order to make the people who walked in the show already disagreeing with them, feel safe (not saying SP does but their maneuvering of it is masterful), Pryor wasnt gonna fuckin apologize for talkin about race and racism and Carlin wasnt gonna fuckin apologize for talkin about conservatives or religion, but when they died the people they offended decided they werent gonna be poked fun of anymore, that anyone that made commentary not from a neutral standpoint would face backlash

    I'm a tall blond white guy. Outside of role-playing games with customization, I've never been able to project myself onto main characters. It feels more like I'm playing through a game that tells a story about someone else who's actually exciting. It has always felt like I'm just being told a story. Like even with Master Chief, my input into the game has always felt separate from the character I'm controlling. But that's just me :T

      In that case I now have negative relation points with Nathan Drake. Cause I can't relate to that guy whatsoever. Probably because I don't tie my identity largely to my race, so him BEING white doesn't afford me any level of innate empathy. Like I played mainly as an Orc in Skyrim, I played as a black guy in Black desert.
      I guess what I'm trying to say is that the color of my skin doesn't affect my starting levels of empathy with any given character, so it's hard for me to subtract empathy based on that. What lets me empathize with a character is either the self-projected backstory in an RPG or sympathetic narrative elements.

    Woolie I'm a Mexican, if there are almost no people who look like you in games there are next to none that look like me, but that has never bothered me, I didn't mind playing as CJ, I didn't mind playing as Miriam from bloodstained, I didn't mind playing as Sam Fisher, hell I didn't mind playing as banjo just like most other people didn't. You can identify with someone's character, values, struggles rather than just stop at the superficial level of sex/race. BTW I think it speaks leagues of someone's character when they are playing someone who isn't their race or gender and deep down they're like "something doesn't feel right" whether they're black, white, female or male.

    I agree somewhat with Woolie about the whole creating a character that looks like you. Obviously games that have set protagonists can be really good like with Mario, Lara Croft, etc. but I almost instantly skip games that don't have character creation/customization.

    • @tenworms
      @tenworms 7 років тому +2

      See that's interesting because I tend to actively count it against games that force you to play a create-a-character. One of the big reasons I hate Bethesda games (though there are many other reasons) is because everybody in them just looks like some fuckin' guy. Character creators like the one in that MM0 that Woolie and Plague did a video on are kind of fun to me, but I would never ever want to play a character that looks like me or any other normal human person. None of my Miis even look like me. I bet there's some sort of psychological facet revealed from who does and doesn't like create-a-characters.

    I never had a problem plaing San Anvreas. I found it logical that every GTA had different backgrounds for protagonists. I mean - people see italian, white american and romanian - as "white guys" as if their cultures are remotely the same. But when there's black american it's an amazing diversity because color.
    San Andreas was always my favorite GTA and i never had a problem putting myself in black dude's shoes, even tho here in Russia it's 99.9% white people, so not only he doesn't look like me - he does not look like anyone around me or on TV (exept for western movies).
    If this color thing in new South Park game is really making the game harder - i maybe play as black guy, since challenge is more important for me then for main character to look like me.

    I've never understood people saying they can't relate to characters who don't look like them as if that's some sort of virtue. Being unable to relate to people who don't look like you isn't a good thing! It's the mark of a bigot.

    • @YZaiCreates
      @YZaiCreates 7 років тому +12

      I'm sorry this is a long post, but i promise you, it's interesting and expands well on this subject.
      it's not really the inability to relate to people, but there is a special difference and special connection when a person has the same background as you or looks like you. This is why Spiderman is a brown haired white high school kid from New York because that's who they were aiming at.
      For me personally, i never really saw myself in anyone or really related to them to that same degree, they were just their own person. That is until The Raid came out. The main character of the raid looks like the people I knew in school. He looks like just some random guy, and it was then that i fully understood the meaning of the Everyman. It's not just someone who's incredibly generic, it's someone who you know, it's someone who represents your own environment in a way that is bland and generic enough to feel like they could be anybody. It's not like I couldn't see how Bruce Willis was the everyman, it's that i didn't get the full context of what that term meant.
      Another aspect to this is representation. There were a lot of cockney crime kitchen sink stuff out there with Eastenders and lock stock and snatch and whatever and people liked those films and shows and stuff. But then Kidulthood came out.
      I grew up in a neighbourhood that is very similar to what is presented in that film, and when it came out in cinema, kids lined up around the block to see it. I had never, and still have never seen lines like that outside the cinema, and this wasn't a midnight showing or anything. People were going because they had never seen their own environment and culture on screen before. This was the first film that ever really showed their stories, spoken in a language that they understood, and done in a way that is realistic. It wasn't condescending, it wasn't insulting. This was not something people were used to, and it's like they were being recognised as worthy of having their story told, and told by a person who was one of them. Part of their world. Before then, all they got was comedians taking the mick out of them.
      If the only representation of you in the media around you is negative or flippant, it devalues you or your culture, especially when you're young. Your story is not worth being told, and you certainly never see someone with your background ever being the hero. The impact of that can last on your personality into adulthood. You can totally say "Well they shouldn't be affected by it," And to some extent, it's a minor thing, but if you never get someone even vaguely related to you in some way showing that that kind of person can be amazing, then it's harder to believe, becuase you've never seen it, even if it is fictional.
      And finally everyone needs a superhero. So you have your every man, your relatable "i'm just like them" person, and your ridiculous fantasy of what you could be. It's not a necessity, but it's so much better to have that supporting environment, especially when you spent decades not having that kind of thing at all. For me personally, that's the guy from The Raid, the current Ms Marvel "Kamala Khan", and Rashid from SFV.

    • @katiebayliss9887

      @@katiebayliss9887 that's not what background means in this context. It's means the societal background you grew up in. It's not the be all and end all of who you are as a person, it's one of many aspects of how and why you engage with things the way you do.
      It takes a village to raise a child, as they say.
      How you grew up affects who you are and what can affect you.

      Relating to people who look similar to you tend to be more of a thing for children through young teens. And many movies, video games, and comic books have big audiences in those demographics. We also see this a lot in Japan where we have tons of protagonists that are generic Japanese kid (maybe with some bright colored hair) and they mostly appeal to young teens who eat that stuff up because they can either relate or insert themselves into the character.

    Difficulty Black: More random fights with cops but bonus to strength and speed.
    Difficulty Woman: Get paid 78% of the total reward, but gets a near endless supply of white knights to help in fights and pay for your bills.
    Difficulty Trans: Gain the Trap ability to surprise and confuse enemies, but often hurt yourself with emotional fits.
    Difficulty Ginger: Weak to Holy attacks and the sun, but can't die from anything else.
    Difficulty Jew: Earn more money and boost to charisma, but is randomly attacked by Muslim extremists and Neo Nazis.
    Difficulty Cis White Male: Basic stats and pay. Loose your current job/quest if you attack anyone who isn't a cis white male. Get randomly attacked by white knights if you wear a red hat.

    It's interesting, I never had the thing of needing a character to look like me to self-insert. I got the same feeling from Vice City that I got from San Andreas. I'm white, but even as a kid there were plenty of times where I would try to make black characters in character creators. And I also tend to play as female characters if I've got the choice. I don't spend a lot of time playing as me visually, but I still have no problem identifying with the characters.

    i've literally never cared about the character looking like me. i have never wanted the character to look like me. and i'm a slightly-above average height white irish-canadian with an eastern european last name, brown hair that can adopt straight, curly or wavey status depending on how recently i took a shower and wore a hat. i'm the person those characters are made for, and i don't identify with ANY of them.
    i play terraria. i made my character midnight black with vibrant red eyes because it looks better when you wear a helmet with an open faceplate. the only reason i make a character look like me is if i'm playing a game with a limited character creator where i can only be "human of average height and skin tone" and i don't feel like playing as a girl.

    I dunno, I kinda felt like kerby when I played return to dreamland. Oddly enough, a character creator breaks my immersion which kills my relatability to my character. That's not even talking about third person. Books don't have this problem at all, and film, well, I don't engage with that, so I can't say. I'm not saying this isn't an issue. I'm just putting it into perspective so people don't poor their lives into an issue that looked bigger than it was. I would rather have a cure for cancer and never be able to identify with my protagonist from birth, then this issue being solved while cancer is still a problem. Or mosquitoes. Fuck mosquitoes.

    I honestly never understood that thing about relating to your character through race or their looks or some shit like that, i never had a hard time getting invested in a game when it had a female pronagonist, or a black protagonist, or anything that would make the character different than me, its not about how the character looks, but about how they are written.
    And when it comes to character creation i never make myself, i always try to make the weirdest shit i can, because i like fun.

    Are most video games really about reliability? I personally disagree, I barely even gave much thought on CJ's colour when I played him even thought I probably played hundreds of hours of GTA SA (which is a lot considering I was a child back then).
    But I guess for Woolie this is like the "It's ok to be white" experiment for me, you just lean back and observe how different groups of people react. Often rational people vs irrational people.

    I really dont see a point to self insert, ESPECIALLY in RPGs. Your role playing. I can see why people would want to, but it's exactly what woolie said, you can play a game where your with your homies then go back to your safe life. Thats what your doing with every game.

  • @Khotgor

    Eh. I never had that feeling of connetion or need of connection, and I generally am willing to play as any character so long as the game is good.
    I didn't give a fuck about San Andreas in terms of me playing as a black guy. I was like "cool, I'm a gangster in this, what can I shoot and what is the fastest way I can break the game until I know every crack and loophole that allows me to, for example, enter the airport and loot a plane when only stationed on the first island.
    In RPGs, sometimes I play as a black dude, or an asian girl, or hispanic, whatever, depending upon what type of character I want in something like Fallout (which I like Densel Washington, so I try to make a wasteland character based off of him or the like).
    I never had any concern as to what character I play, as I can never see myself as that character. I have no illusion that I am link, some fairy ass pretty boy that apparently can get all the girls despite not saying a god damn word... or tree trunk Marcus Fenix. Or overly cheesy and manly Indiana Jones or Uncharted Guy. There is no 'white guy' that I can ever see as myself, or be connected to as myself, because I have no connection with them... and connecting to someone just because they share the same skin or sex is generally petty. Even though none of them have skin or sex, because none of them are real, but whatever.
    In my favourite game, Resident Evil Outbreak, I generally play as either Jim or Mark, both 'Black Guys', the most, because they are the best characters that feel the best to play as. I don't care what they are, because I am not the person that gives a fuck since I have a strong disconnect between fantasy and reality, I don't give a fuck about whats between your legs or what skin tone you have, and three they aren't people. They're sprites. Who gives a shit.

I mean really, has woolie ever truly experienced what true oppression is like, had a difficult life cause he we black? As black male I never projected myself into the characters I have played as in video games, I always saw them as completely separate entities. Like a character in a book.
