I love how gerty subverts the expectation of a science fiction AI. I feel like everybody was expecting him to become the enemy somehow, just like 2001 a space odyssey ... but instead he's just an AI, a robot. programmed to make sam happy, even if it means telling him the truth. it's kind of sad, actually.
@@DragonPhlegm Actually that wouldn't be an AI at all. No one knows what a true AI would be like, there's only science fiction to educated guess about it.
Actually, not even Hal from Space Odyssey is that evil. They explain it better in the book series, but he was just suffering from a malfunction that was his programmings fault. He really did care about Dave and Frank, and they cared about him. The media seems to have this predisposition that all AI have to be evil or emotionless, and I just don't agree. I understand why someone would have worries about real life AI, but in fiction anything could happen, including friendly AIs. It just annoys me how people never give these characters the slightest benefit of the doubt. And what's worse? I think the quality of these kind of films are drastically downgraded when people refuse to acknowledge an AI character having emotions. Because you are basically taking a major character and taking away all the feelings from them just because they are a computer. So the story makes no sense. Hal is saved from this because he still works as a villian even if you remove the sympathetic aspect of his character. Sure the deactivation scene doesn't make a whole lot of sense since it's meant to be sad, but everything else is still fine. But for movie this, Electric Dreams (1984), Tau (2018), or other movies with clearly sympathetic AI characters make no sense when people doesn't acknowledge the AIs emotions. Because then their actions and the other characters actions make no sense. The writer makes it clear these characters aren't evil, or at least morally grey, but some people just don't get it. Then they complain about the movie being "bad" but it's not the movie's fault if a majority of the audience is close-minded and can't open up to a character just because they are not human. It drives me nuts, because I love the characters, but some people just refuse to understand them!
I liked that there was a sticky note that said “Kick me”, and how the screen emoted. But i did honestly feel like he was programed to b sinister and i dont like him for that
3:07 Sam Rockwell kills it. no overacting, no screaming, no flipping tables. With only a stare and a short nod he communicates the feelings of a man whose whole reality just collapsed around him. sure he had his suspicions, but it's the first time he hears it outright.
The moment when he is being told the truth, when he turns around and doesn't want to be consoled is for me truly the saddest moment of this incredible movie😢
I agree-- and the picture that comes up on Gerty's screen, with the tear and closed eyes. It's just a frigging emoji but it gets me choked up every time.
What gets me is the silent nod he does before the turn. There's no denial, no anger, nothing. He knows Gerty isn't lying to him, and he has nothing left to do but let the existentialism of his entire life being a lie sink in.
The most human-like entities of the movies are the non-humans: the robot and the clones. The natural humans are the coldest and cruelest, even a robot is more caring then they.
The human race are clones, created 400,000 years ago to be slaves and sexual objects. No one wants to believe it, because the grim reality beneath the initial absurdity is terrifying and full of hopelessness. We are clones. you, me, everyone.
I always thought it was so sad and yet so touching, no pun intended, when Gerty tells Sam he is so sorry and goes to touch him. Kevin Spacey and Sam Rockwell are two of the best actors ever.
i really love movies with AI companionship. and Gerty is one of my fave! giving you a sinister vibes at first ..but in the end, he’s the most purist concern AI friend of all ❤
Btw, culture and this movie are implanted memories. Think about that. But think also about the transcendence of art and human freedom to then compensate. Have a nice month.
They can't have been doing this for long. His daughter Eve is 15 during the movie and every Sam has a 3 year contract. So that means there's been 5 Sam's who did a 3 year mission. The first one was the real Sam bell he left while his wife was heavily pregnant from the pictures. The real Sam Finished his mission when eve was around 3 they reused the video messages the real Sam received during his 3 year mission for the clones. So then there were 3 more clones which fits we only see 3 clones being frozen. then this sam is the 5th clone. And the 6th would be the other Sam who eacapes.. And 7th the last sam awoken in the final scenes. the last scene a newscaster says " clone 6 the clone of Sam bell clone appeared before Congress" so the sam who escaped was the 6th Sam. he's the 6th Sam to do the mission and 1 of the 6 clones who were awoken. So they got away with this for 12 years. They must have planned to do this for way longer. they had enough Sam clones for a few 100 years.
Sam, those are memories of Tess from the original Sam. They are now 77 years old. There is a 99.999813% chance that Tess has already died. If she were alive, she would be 109 years old. I'm sorry Sam. We are 77 years further into the future than you were led to believe. We would like to thank our founder Elon Musk for starting this company to use clones to mine the moon for minerals. The original Sam volunteered to be cloned for the company and we thank him for his donation.
This is smart because he plays usually the bad guy. Gerti looks ambiguous at the beginning. AIs are rarely good in movies and the smiley face screams "fake friendly".
I was always confused if the real Sam Bell actually lived there or just used him as a model for clones. If using clones it wouldn't make much sense to have the original actually live there for 3 years
Kevin Spacey only voiced a robot. Yet is able to be more interesting than a lot of other characters that used over 2 films to be interesting. Not calling names

Sam Bell a scientific astronaut. Who is sent to the moon for 3 years to acquire resources to earth who later finds that he is nothing more than a clone...

I’m glad this movie has a more realistic version of AI. It’s not sinister, it’s not evil, it’s literally just a computer behaving like a computer.

that crying smiley face still kills me.
IT WAS SO ADORABLE AND SAD
Honestly this film broke my heart. It will forever be Sam Rockwells best film.
None of this us real.
I have some films of Sam Rockwell that I can consider so good, for example: Snow Angels. Another great acting for me by Rockwell.

Underrated movie with an underrated actor. Sam Rockwell is so good
Powerful scene! Sam Rockwell is such a Terrific UNDERRATED actor!!!
Matt Dorton not anymore....Oscar winner
Matt Dorton well he finally got an Oscar
That nod that he gives. Hearing the crushing truth and accepting it and trying to stay strong. Ouch.

Kevin Spacey was SO good as GERTY. This is one of those roles that is probably more difficult to nail than it seems.
Even though Gerty is apart of the operation San still appreciates him being there and listening....
Incredible scene.

I love this file! Gerty is the actual opposite of HAL 9000!
a powerful scene from a fantastic film
Gerty was probably fighting with itself like crazy, to tell Sam the truth and provide real help to them.
