This was Alice Ghostly's Broadway debut, as it was for all the talents in this show. She was a wonderful singer, but made her fame as a comedienne. She won a Tony for The Sign in Sidney Brusteen's Window. See Wikipedia. Others launched by this show were Eartha Kitt, Carol Lawrence, Ronnie Graham and Robert Clary and it was written by Mel Brooks with songs by Sheldon Harnick. I have the old video...I don't think it's been put on DVD commercially. That's a shame. Such talent!
Thank you VERY much for posting this rare gem!!!! I've liked this show ever since I was a little boy from listening to my mother's 45rpm set of highlights. Out of curiosity, do you know what TV show were these excerpts performed on?
ALICE WAS A GREAT FRIEND I KNEW HER AND HER HUSBAND ANOTHER FIND ACTOR, WE WORKED ON BROADWAY IN A PLAY THAT BOMBED IN 1979 ,ALICE TOLD ME THAT PAUL LYNDE JUST STOLE HER WAY OF TALKING AND DID I FOR THE REST OF HIS CAREER,TRUE STORY!!!
I played "Guess Who I Saw Today" from "New Faces of 1952" (I have the original album) for a friend thinking that she would love it. She was used to hearing it by Nancy Wilson and thought the June Carol's version was "silly". What in the world made me do that. Consider your audience! What a gem that show was.
@anokaguy Glad you are asking the same question. It's partly the industry's fault for the lowered standards and the people in the industry who have no sense of real talent or taste. So you see phoney "talent" because those in the position to judge who is qualified, or "talented" may be equally as phoney. As the saying goes, "birds of a feather flock together."
I've always thought that NEW FACES of 1952 was strictly a stage show. I had no idea it had been preserved on kinescope as a live TV show. I've enjoyed watching them doing comedy together. There was a real chemistry between the two. I didn't realize they'd both started out in NEW FACES .
I wonder if Ghostly was ever considered for the role of Miss Marmelstein in I Can Get if for You Wholesale eleven years after this? She would have been very good, but perhaps not have created the sensation that Streisand did. Timing is so important in showbiz.
Wow! One of my favorite albums as a kid (my parents saw the show on a date before they married.) The movie version is pretty bad; the humor is undercut with the strangest directorial choices. This was pure pleasure to watch. Was it a television special? Is there more available? Thank you so much for posting!!
""Guess Who I Saw Today" June Carroll hmmmm, Eartha Kitt later on covered this june Carroll song here as well. I never cared for it nor understood what it was. i guess it was a show tune from this musical?
There was a time when talent was actually hungry. Vaudeville and all. Today, just go down to your local mall and try out for the current "star search" clone. The old stuff is usually much more creative.
What a beautiful singing voice Alice Ghostly had.
Also sounds good in Cinderella
I had NO idea she could sing like THAT! Brava!

Amazing story! Thank you for sharing it!
What a surprise! I never knew Alice had a trained singing voice. She certainly was under rated.

I love Nancy’s version too!!
I also enjoyed this version as well!!
It's called the Boston Beguine written by Sheldon Harnick. You can find it at musicnotes.
even alice ghostly was young once and not without feminine guile and charm...nice pipes, too.
Never knew Alice Ghostly could sing. Television boxes performers in!
This is awesome. Uncle Arthur and Esmerelda!
You speak the truth, Kemo Sabe !!
Esmeralda
Sufferin' Sucatash !! What a treat to watch !! So much talent !! THANK YOU so much for uploading for us to enjoy !! CHEERS !! :-)
I always thought this was Alice Ghostly when I heard it on record. Paul Lynde and she sound so much alike.
Such a good voice I'm surprised that her career was relatively modest.

@vittoriostoraro Well, I'm conservative, and I thought Paul Lynde was terrific.
I'm a little late, but the Non Sequitur Award has been given to you retroactively.
Wow, Alice Ghostly, what a treasure!!
WOW...who KNEW Alice Ghostly had a VOICE!
"Esmeralda" sings?! Holy cow!

Paul Lynde and Alice Ghostley looked liked siblings. And their voices and mannerisms! They "helped" each other, obviously!
Paul Lynde playing Paul Lynde regardless of character.
I never knew Alice had a great singing voice, did she ever work on Broadway?
@swireb I very much appreciate your personal note. thank you
I loved Paul Lynde ! I subscribe to all Paul Lynde videos channel !He was so funny !

Chris N she replaced Dorthy Louden on Broadway as Miss Hanigan in Annie.

Wonderful discovery!
This is such a treat!!!
Bernice Clifton was a hilarious character. Molly in with six you get egg roll. Murdock in Grease.
Those two always reminded me of each other.
Right on !! Their laughs were very similar !!
Where did all the talent go? Will we ever seen such depth in performers again?
Probably China or India
She was great!!
Could be the video quality, but Alice looked older than her early twenties here.
""Guess Who I Saw Today" June Carroll
hmmmm, Eartha Kitt later on covered this june Carroll song here as well. I never cared for it nor understood what it was. i guess it was a show tune from this musical?
Nancy Wilson also sang this song. Nice. ;-)
Who was the first woman singing, “ Guess Who I Saw Today”?
June Carrol? I think
