Thanksgiving is a 2023 American slasher film directed by Eli Roth, from a screenplay written by Jeff Rendell and a story by Roth and Rendell, who produced with Roger Birnbaum. It is based on Roth's fictitious trailer of the same name from Grindhouse (2007). It is the third feature-length film to be adapted from one of the fictitious trailers in Grindhouse after Robert Rodriguez's Machete (2010) and Jason Eisener's Hobo with a Shotgun (2011). Hahaha!!! I can't believe you guys put in the clip of the stuffed "turkey" from the Grindhouse Thanksgiving Trailer!?! I can still remember attending the early midnight showing with a COMPLETELY PACKED theater, and the reveal of that "turkey" got the biggest and most audible response of laughter, squealing, cheering, & disgust I'd ever heard during a movie. It was already a pretty rowdy crowd too, both Planet Terror and Death Proof got plenty whooping & hollering, but the cheerleader on the trampoline got a great reaction which also teed up the audience for the dinner scene. One of the best moviegoing experiences.
So good! It was an all timer theatre experience for sure!

I had a great time with Thanksgiving.
I would've preferred that it had more of a grindhouse tone to it.
Then again that might've not fit the retro vibe of the movie.
I actually liked most of the characters even though they were your stereotypical jocks, nerds, popular kids, etc.
Pretty good gore in it, too. But I felt it was just one or two over-the-top deaths away from being what you expect from Eli Roth.
I'm putting this into my annual rotation when it hits blu-ray.
Best theatre experience post-covid and possibly the last decade
So glad you guys both loved this! I had a fuckin blast with it myself! Everything you guys highlighted, I absolutely loved. All the references and nods to stuff from the 70s and 80s Horror and Cult movies had me grinning from ear to ear the entire time. Also glad that it’s seemingly doing well and turned a handsome profit - can easily see a sequel happening. I’ve seen people complain about the cast, but I thought they were all perfectly cast. And, to top it all off with “Where Eagles Dare” by The Misfits over the end credits? This is a huuuuuge W all around! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Also, once this hits home media, I’m anxiously waiting for the inevitable fan edit that adds a 35mm/Grindhouse vibe to it. 😂
I’ve just heard an interview with Eli Roth and he said the reason the movie took so long was that they put all the kills in the trailer so the movie would just be a collection of tedious to shoot and watch linking scenes - until he watched footage of a Black Friday riot and found one of the pilgrims really was called John Carver - then the movie came together. The canon is that the original movie was completely destroyed after a public backlash so only the trailer remained

That’s a fun idea! I can’t believe it took that long to concoct the story. I understand the muse needs to strike, but It’s clearly heavily borrowed from all of our favorites, which is totally fine, but it’s not some super original idea haha. It could have easily been some made up guy and the tragedy could have been a lot of diff things.
The connective tissue is integral to make the fun parts work, but that’s a hella long time. Still, whatever the reason, they pulled it off!

You've said it all. Also loved it. "Thanksgiving" was a great theater experience last November and an awesome slasher that transcends it's holiday setting (I'm from Portugal, we don't celebrate thanksgiving and still the movie works so well). Thanks for the always great videos.

My brother and I went and saw the grind house double features. Probably one of my favorite movie experiences of all time. The trailers between films were so badass. I still have my ticket stub. There was a Christmas movie that came out last year called Christmas bloody Christmas, with a robot Santa killing people that had a grimy vhs feel to it. It also wasn’t that bad either. Have you guys seen that?

I really enjoyed it! Just crazy and over the top, lot of fun! I know some were complaining about the F bomb being dropped a lot but I was in the Marines so that’s old hat to me lol
I’d recommend it as well.

Personally, I’d still put X above thanksgiving as far as the best recent slashers.
But thanksgiving is still a silly, good time when you’re in the mood for a comedic slasher that’s easy to follow.
I enjoyed this film and forgotten that this film was part of the "Grindhouse" trailers back then. And there maybe be a hint of sequelitis with the killers john carver masks being different but could be a gag.
Never understood why Grindhouse wasn't bigger. Or why no one has attempted to do something similar. Never understood why people consider Death Proof to be a lesser Tarantino movie. I haven't seen Thanksgiving yet. But I hope there's a Grindhouse cut. I have seen others share this same opinion.

I checked this out when it launched on Netflix. I loved it. I do wish we had seen it in the cinema but the Mrs. isn't liking gory horror these days🤦♂Anywho. I gotta add this to ThanksKilling 1&3 and Black Friday for November/Holiday season. Definitely worth the wait. Great episode guys!🤟

i thought The House With The Clock In The Walls was noteworthy…i watched it with an eye on howRoth a noted hard R guy would direct a kids film…the scene where the villain recounts meeting the demon in the woods stood out…you could catch a glimpse of Roth restraining himself
I enjoyed Robert Rodriguez's kids movies. I like when thy can make both.
Dudes, I loved the film and had a complete blast at the Thursday screening I went to last week at Alamo Drafthouse. The kills were fucking brutal (Even with the brief uses of CG), neat chases and good acting. Even from some of the younger actors (They were fine enough), while giving us fucking John Carver. XD Characters are... well, it is a Eli Roth film, but considering this is supposed to be a throwback to 80's/90's slashers, I can let it slide.
My personal favorite character was McCarty, the drug dealer/gun seller, I was happy to see him live and thought his Black Sabbath rant was on point. XD I do sincerely hope this gets a sequel, see where things go from here. Also, human turkey. XP

If you guys get the chance i highly recommend seeing a movie from El Roth called The House With A Clock in Its Walls.
I couldnt believe when i saw it at the cinema years ago that it was from the same director as the Hostel and Green Inferno movies.
It is a very fun family movie starring Jack Black and Cate Blanchette, in the same veign as the Goosebump movie. .
Thanksgiving was such a satisfying horror gem. It truly did make up for the wimpy offerings we had for Halloween this year because, for me, the last three that I saw- Last Voyage of the Demeator, Exorcist: Believer and Five Nights at Freddy's- were huge let downs. Eli Roth truly did craft an impressive story even if it took 16 years to make.
I was a bit disappointed that Roth pulled back on the sleaze from the original trailer, but I was overall satisfied with the new form it took. It’s less Pieces now and more Happy Birthday To Me. I’m honestly a big fan of Eli, his 2 Hostel films are some of my favorite horror movies. They’re understandably uncomfortable for most people and they clearly alienated critics and certain horror fans at the time, but it’s nice he got to make something that’s a fun crowd pleaser which critics could finally get on board with too.
Also CumTown isn’t Tim Dillon’s podcast, but he’s friends with them and has been a guest on a few times.
Hands down the best movie review channel on UA-cam.

Just saw it after Thanksgiving dinner with the family. We were all laughing our asses off (in a positive way). A few other people in the theatre as well.
All time favorite movie is Evil Dead 2. But this one is top-tier. Definitely.

I love HWAS but it's a tough movie to recommend to people because of how mean it can be. Still hope it gets the sequel the ending leaves an opening to. Molly Dunsworth needs to be in more stuff (RIP John Dunsworth TPB4life)
I like that they literally reveal who the killer is in the beginning of the movie. At least I had a feeling it was going to be that person. 😂

I used to be a fan but his older output hasn't aged well. I'm not sure what to think of his IRL persona but it's not my business to care unless he does something heinous anyway

The day after you watch Thanksgiving (2023) you need to watch Black Friday (2021). That should be a new tradition.

I liked the Grindhouse double feature with Tarantino and Rodriguez. I'd like to see two more filmmakers do it again. I don't think Tarantino would go back, but Rodriguez probably would.

I guess it helps to be a fan of these types of movies cause I didn't care for it. I dig slasher films, but I'm not a super fan. It's cool that fans of the genre got a film that some of them seem to really love though.

It wasn’t technically. They ran a contest for Grindhouse calling indie filmmakers to make a fake trailer, and Jason Eisner won with Hobo with a Shotgun!
Great minds think alike. I wrote a treatment for a horror movie called 8th inning. It's about a disgruntled baseball player who gets fired over steroids and terrorizes the stadium while a group of teenagers breaks into the stadium to party.
Well, ours is very different and there’s plenty of room for both!

Eli Roth, Joe does not speak for me, I for sure want a Sequel…Joe are you nuts? There needs to be a sequel, that’s how Holiday Slashers work!? Even after seeing it again there is sooo much visual symbolism pointing to a sequel including potential new look, kinda like his “potato sack” phase…with his mask melting I took that as this the sequel and then he gets a “new mask” bringing him back to his Original look for the 3rd film and final film maybe the mask is latex?…also I wouldn’t mind a sequel, leaning more into Texas Chainsaw Massacre…. maybe a following of crazies just happened upon the…you know? And there’s like an isolated community of supporters…WHO KNOWS! The point is if I’m getting Terrifier 3 a film series that I give props but don’t really understand then I want a slasher series that isn’t aware it’s a slasher film.

You’re a fan of horror and Slashers and I’m sure masked slasher films hold a special place in your heart…it’s just intriguing that an original slasher film that seems to be planting natural sequel seeds that’s never been done before within the genre, wouldn’t be something that you’re interested in…also I really loved the flow of this episode I’ve on repeat since it’s dropped

I didn't like it as much as you guys. The old Grindhouse trailer was better. I didnt like the Black Friday mob scene. That felt dated, stores don't really do that anymore. Didnt like the cell phone and social media stuff. I liked it but did not think it was great. A little undercooked. I will buy it to watch every Thanksgiving though because I'm not a big fan of that holiday anyway.

Just saw this on Saturday night…only my party of 3 and one other couple in the theater…
This is Roth’s best movie IMO. Reminded me of Scream 3 a bit with P. Dempsey as sherif (since he was a cop in scream 3). This could be a new franchise for sure 👍👍. We enjoyed it all the way through. My daughter was a bit grossed out. The store owner getting a slice of his wife’s thigh carved got me, not gonna lie 🤢
