  • We explain VHS-C Tape Adapters and how Video8 and MiniDV tapes don't fit in them. The tapes are different sizes and the heads on a VHS machine can't read them. They never made a VHS adapter for Video8 or MiniDV. Buy a VHS-C adapter: amzn.to/2N1avUe Buy blank VHS-C tapes: amzn.to/2SwcPBO

Not only is the tape not the same size, but the signal is recorded completely differently. Even if you were to magically have a 1/2" 8mm tape (which would basically be a beta tape) the VHS heads would have no idea how to read the magnetic data.

  • @video99couk
    @video99couk Рік тому +2

The other nonsense I hear from time to time is that there was a Beta to VHS adaptor. Of course this is complete rubbish. Though VHS and Beta use the same tape width, the video tracks are written in a different pattern on the tape, at a different speed and with different technical specifications. What people fail to understand is that VHS was just one format, notable only by being one of the very lowest quality video formats ever designed. Beta, V2000, Philips VCR, professional BetacamSP, HDCAM, D9, MII and other formats all use half inch tape but are all different and incompatible.

There was an adapter to enable early U-Matic machines to play the smaller U-Matic S cassettes used in portable recorders but later machines could take the smaller cassettes directly. With care, it was possible to use the smaller cassettes in the early machines without the adapter.
There was an adapter to play mini DV tapes in Panasonic DVC Pro machines.

Not just the Mini DV won't fit, it's also digital, so the playback is not compatible with the VHS because VHS-C is analog, not digital.

JVC went on to create Super VHS, same quality as Hi 8 and then DVHS including a HD format version for 1920x1080. I have never come across camcorder versions of Super VHS-C or digital ones. JVC sold miniDV camcorders.

*An addendum to what I just wrote... If your editing software has a video in reverse feature, you can have some fun with the blowing out the candles bit, split the video at the point just before the candles are blown out, and again just after(usually about one second's duration), copy the sequence into "clipboard" then paste, either four or six more times, this then gives an odd number of pastes, so the first, third and fifth(and seventh) are normal forward motion, the second and fourth(and sixth) are reverse motion. Highlight the 5(or 7) segments and render them with the title "comic insert" for example), delete the "sequences" and replace them with the "comic insert" and you have your comedy shot, candles lit/blown out/lit/blown out... The viewers will get a real laugh out of it!

what you can do with 8mm is to just plug your camcorder into a vhs video recorder as a source of signal, set the video recorder to record the signal and then play your 8mm on a camcorder. sure, its re-recording so you're gonna lose a little bit of quality in that process but it's better than nothing. my parents did that for a long time. should also work with minidv and basically any source as long as you can plug it in

In whatever situation, whether playing a VHS-C cassette from the camera on which you shot the video, or n a VHS deck via adaptor, or from analogue Video-8/Hi-8, the analogue signal will have to be fed to a computer via USB capture card device. The output(RCA connectors) are Yellow = composite video; White(sometimes Black) = Left Ch. Audio; Red = Right Ch. Audio. The output from some video cameras maybe in the form of a lead which terminates at one end with RCA plugs(colours as described) and at the other end with either a variant of a phone plug or some other unusual connector(hard to describe). At least though, with one end of the lead as RCA plugs, match them to the same-coloured sockets on the capture-card, then plug the capture card to your computer via a spare USB port, give it a couple of seconds for the computer to "find" the device(which is usually "plug & play") and you're set to dig into all those old tapes of Granny nursing baby Jenny or little Johnny blowing out the candles on his 5th birthday cake*.

They probably meant to keep the rewinding to a minimum. A VCR or camera that has issues may damage the tape. Obviously you need to rewind the tape but probably best to start converting it as soon as possible and not skip around too much while previewing.

Because video 8 and mini dv tapes are digitalized. Standard vhsc are standard analogue. So if they did make a mini dv or video 8 adapter it wouldn't play in a vhs player the heads are different inside. Also the width of the tape is the same on a vhs and vhsc

There is a miniDV to full-size DV adapter but VHS is a completely different format. First of all, miniDV/DV uses 6.35mm metal particle tape while VHS uses 12.7mm cobalt-doped tape. And second, DV is digital while VHS is analog. VHS-C is the same format as VHS. The only difference is the physical size of the cassette and that's why those adapters were posible to make.

They stopped making the camcorders years back. May be able to find a used one on ebay. Otherwise take them to a business like ours who can transfer them to DVD or USB. Sooner than later.

There is no way this is true. I still have the only 3 childhood cassettes I had and they are the exact ones you show in the middle and the right. I dont remember which one it was for (I think the middle one) but I definitely 100% had a adapter for it just like the one on the left.

If you can produce a Video8 or MiniDV to VHS adapter we'll give you $10,000!

Adapting to what? It can't have adapted to VHS as there's literally no way that's possible.

Stop looking for cheap adapters and start looking for expensive ass Sony Video 8 mini players or VHS cameras that shoot on 8mm film - about sums it up for me.

3EEE you need to use a DV camera or deck to play them back

    • @geraldmcmullon2465

miniDV camcorders are inexpensive. DV decks five times their original price on eBay. But fund one, transfer your tapes and then resell the deck maybe for even more than you paid for it. So you are out of pocket by $1000 until you get the project done.
