I bought the Console 1 after watching one of your earlier videos in this series. I'm very happy with the product and impressed by how easy it was to incorporate it into my workflow. The Console 1 has made mixing so much faster and fun for me. Thanks for all the videos you've done with this product!
I had this set up for a couple of years and you are right... the lack of OLED scribble strip displays killed it for me. I often got lost as to which channel I was on...I still have the console 1 but sold the fader. Again, your comments re. the look of the plugin... I stopped using the plugins and now use the console 1 to control the studio one fat channel which is much less taxing on the cpu.
All your comments on aesthetics are spot on. I understand their intention, they were just trying to create a fun, efficient, simple product, but if you showed this product to me without telling me it’s history , I would have guessed it was made in the early part of the century, around the same time as the Yamaha digital boards like the 01V 96, or aw4416. The faders even look the same. While i appreciate it’s no frills look/approach , I must admit, it’s also the main reason I bypassed seriously considering buying it. It didn’t look like a serious machine to me. It took me watching your videos and a few other UA-camrs, to convince me to consider getting one. Seriously, how do you omit a scribble strip on such a crowded little machine? Have the softube guys even LOOKED at a Behringer Wing, avid s6, s4 or SSL Nucleus 2? if console 1 & fader “looked” better, it would probably take over the industry.
Some EQ plugins allow you to solo individual bands. I haven't been able to find if that's possible with Console 1. If not, I'd love that as an added feature as well.
I agree fully about the good and the bad. I also would like to see a selectable midi mode (this can be done by quitting the console app). I also think that a bus sidecar to go along with a second set of faders would be a great thing. This would make it easy to select and control bus channels (and custom buss plugins could be developed). This would mount in the chassis above a second set of faders. On the side at a lower tilt maybe even have a transport with jog. The footprint does not grow greatly but you are buying into a system that makes your DAW easily compete with Pro Tools and Avid controllers. BTW. I do have console one along side Avid Dock and S1 surfaces as I get all the things. I would gladly support Softube as they are an excellent company. Softube has even started doing sales as the prices on the plugins can be out of reach on today's budgets. Good stuff all the way around. OK... one more thing. Maybe the DAW manufacturers would participate in allowing the integrated channel (I use Nuendo/Cubase but used Studio One previously). Imagine an instantly expanded list of options that come directly from the integration with the DAW. If the company chooses not to participate it simply does not offer the sections in the list.
Haha I have console 1 and fader… it’s so good it’s making me consider going to studio one because of the integration…. I use protools and it’s good but with studio one it’s amazing I heard!
Hi Dave, great vids. I've watched twice before purchasing both units. Interesting point regarding mixing from start to finish with virtually zero hands on the mouse but in terms of adding extra effects to your mix like verbs, echo etc, I don't see any other way but to add that afterwards or bake it in whilst tracking. Any thoughts? I suppose you'd have to have effects bus tracks pre-set in the DAW.
Congrats on the new gear! You cant add reverbs, delays using the Console 1 as far as I know. You need to add to you DAW the old fashion way....mouse/keyboard
Thanks for making this video. I’ve been using the console + fader with Cubase for a few years now and completely agree on your pro’s and con’s. Sorry for not bringing a new perspective on the matter, but hey… you did nail it, so it’s on you 😂 oh, I could add that I did have some issues with the fader unit, which led to a lot of communication with Softube support who were really helpful. It turned out to a hardware issue and the unit was eventually replaced. I guess nice customer support could be added to the list of pro’s 👍 Have a great day // Wince
I have had the console 1 (not the fader) for a couple of years with 5 of their console emulations. Just stopped using it and deleted it from my DAW computer. I recently switched from pc to a Macbook Pro. With the M1 processor I have a great portable DAW computer now, and I don’t want to carry the Console 1 too. Yes, there is a plugin version for situations like this. But it is even more primitive than the onscreen strip. Also you can’t do things like swapping EQ, compressor etc. You need the hardware for this. BTW I never got used to the way knobs work on console 1. Unlike true analog units they accelerate. At least if you wish to use Console 1 in DAW mode to control faders etc. in Studio One. The linear mode is not compatible with DAW mode. I do like the sound of the emulated consoles. So I wish Softube would make a great looking entirely software based version.
Thanks for the video! I agree with the look of the plugin. I almost bought a console 1 but held off hoping they would update them to look like the other UAD channel strips.
Hi David. Thank you again for this Console One series. I agree with all of you suggested improvements, especially the scribble strip and larger lettering. My fantasy feature would be if the fader knobs were lighted and changed colors to match my selected DAW channel. When changing banks I find it easier to just click on the channel even though that requires a mouse click. EDIT Maybe Softube can add these refinements in their new improved, twenty channels in one fader strip. : )
"fader knobs were lighted and changed colors to match my selected DAW channel.". The lights does match the DAW channels colour. Are you perhaps using a DAW without full integration?
It'ss weird your Fader doesn't use the channel colours from Studio One. It should andit'ss a pretty significant change in the newest Console version. Its not scribblestrips but it helps quite a lot.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy yeah or doesn't look like so in the video but it could just be the recording. I agree the LEDs are a but vague. I tilted mine a bit more which helps.
It would be awesome if they made a 20 fader controller instead of having to buy 2 of them and ending up with redundant controls. I'd buy it in a second
The console 1 mk2 is out there... Did softube took into consideration your thoughts on improvement on this video? Is there a significant difference between this review and the mk2 unit?
I agree with you on mostly everything except the GUI being out of date. I think it is the other way around. I could care less about looking at knobs turning. I already know I am turning it, to sacrifice space for that does not make sense to me. Having the visual cue of waveforms and such does. To add to your list though, 1, I would suggest an addition fader unit that is designed to be a slave to the main fader C1. Perhaps a USB daisy chain between them. 2, On the main unit, add a flip switch that shuts #Softube off to custom control other plugins (perhaps offer a 5 button memory for favs). #3, Add a audio location scrubber function to one of the two main controllers or both (perhaps add some memory functions for this as well to save some location points. Over all this a great system though and I live mixing with it. Thank you Sorftube and great job on your videos Mike!
Thanks David, wonderful videos! I'm conflicted between buying the Fader 1 (great with Console 1, sleek form factor) or the FaderPort 8/16 (deep integration with Studio One and scribble strips, plugin control). With budget not an issue, which way would you go after all your testing? Thank you again!
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy thanks David...just curious on your thoughts on my question above on buying the faderport vs the fader 1? Appreciate your response!
I agree with the assesment that there should be at least a picture for the UAD plugins that would make me buy it again especvially when using it around clients they like graphics more than the sound laugh out loud
Hi David, thank you for these awesome video's and insights! What would think of a combination of a Softube Console 1 on top of a SSL UF8? Would it be a best of both worlds?
I dislike the channel strip UI, especially when they use bars everywhere, while knobs would be more intuitive (I'm used to compressor parameters being knobs, I just cannot read the attack as a bar)

All very good points. Its functional for sure but not very inspiring to work on. At least in my opinion
im not planning to buy this thing, but i watch your review for entertainment reason. 🙂

They are 1" round color stickers from amazon. Do a simple search there and you'll find them!
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy 1"? my knobs aint that big tho. But thanks will take a look around
Check out Chromacaps they are great and what I used on mine! I also got some tiny color stickers for mute and solo to be red and yellow like cubase
Will you please do a video with console 1 fader in Cakewalk?
I dont use Cakewalk, sorry
Navigation is a nightmare for me because of the missing track display
It does take a little to get the muscle memory down with the Console 1
How do you know what track your working on? Does it show the track name on the controller, or do you have to still look at the computer?
LED lights up on the console 1
I dislike the channel strip UI, especially when they use bars everywhere, while knobs would be more intuitive (I'm used to compressor parameters being knobs, I just cannot read the attack as a bar)
I agree
It used to control faders in cakewalk then it stopped?
Not sure what to do, sorry
Can it work with the native stock DAW channel strip?
no, not that I am aware of
can you assign CC to the individual faders on the fadr 1?
I believe so but I would check with the Softube tech support to be certain.
Does this console have a sound...or is it just a a controller
just a controller
Are you going to do the SSL UF8?
No. Not anytime soon
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy Well, it was worth asking. Thanks for the reply!
Console1 makes me break the rules, ears, not numbers!
