first impressions back in 93, I wasn't a fan of the album. Depressed me. David was so happy with married life for Slip of the Tongue. Musically disappears for years and returns a broken man from divorce and his voice seemed damaged. Today revisiting the album, I love it. David's lower register is so rich and bluesy. Deep songs too.
David’s speaking voice is so rich. Jimmy as always sounds elfin. But when David talks about Jimmy as “His Lordship”, it’s so amusing. Only the English would use that particular reference. It’s delightful.
Great pairing, Great album!! Best of Both Worlds. Zep genius and Whitesnake blues rocker and lyricist 😎!! Glad they were a part of my time in history 🤩

You can find Shake my Tree studio versión with Robert Plant as vocalist and compare it with the versión of Coverdale - Page. They are very different both.

David`s great mistake was stop whitesnake when in its heydays although he did a great job with Page, the best Pag`s album out of Led Zepp even did 2 very goods albums under "The Firm " name and one under His own name. In this interview David is pretty well dressed. Very Elegant.
Oh, I heard Dave's comment about how Robert treated him and I see it like this: I can see David's side because, as he said, if they knew each other then, all the sudden, getting this rage coming at him must be disconcerting. However, I can see Robert's side because man, you're encroaching on his territory, so to speak. But, if Robert didn't want to get together and record an album or go on tour, that's on him. But, as a whole, it was Jimmy, a member of Zeppelin, who decided to do this and should've known his old bandmate would be pissed, rightly so. I agree w/one commenter than subconsciously or deliberately Jimmy might've been pitting Plant and Coverdale against each other. Unfortunately, once again Robert took the bait but, at least a Plant & Page reunion came out of it.
what did Coverdale do with Plant's territory? nothing. Plant always acted like he invented the rock-frontman persona, but he didn't, there were Daltrey, Jagger, Jim Morrison, Van Morrison etc etc before him. Coverdale never copied him more than Plant copied Daltrey.
@@benjaminmoloy7163 I agree none of these guys invented the wheel but, it's true that Coverdale has been a Plant wannabe, nothing wrong w/that. I can understand him being upset that Page went on tour w/out him but, at the same time, he said no. I think Jimmy knew that touring w/Coverdale would piss him off. That's why he did it and it obviously worked because they toured together throughout the 90s. He did say he had a problem w/his ego and, again, I think Jimmy knew it. Hey, if you've known someone for 20+ years, you know now to play them. I guess Jimmy can play other things besides the guitar😉
@Tim Rubin Halcomb David. Never Dave. He hates being called that. (I saw him answering viewer video mails, someone called him Dave and he just went: "who the fuck is 'Dave'?") A true fan should know that.😒 Would know that.
Interesting to hear 2 experience-laden rock Music professionals discussing Details in interview.David in those days looked the spitting Image of Ken Tamplin on the cover of Ken's Axe To Grind Album.
That would've brought the hammer. No question about it. Jones would've added a lot of wallop to Jimmy. But, you can hear it now - 'It's Led Zeppelin with David Coverdale.' Oh shit the music press would've wet themselves with that comparison. And Plant would've been 10x more critical of Coverdale.
Stephanie Sandlin Plant would have shit himself from jealousy. We all know the Page/Plant thing happened only because Robert was scared of Jimmy working with anyone who isn't him.
Jimmy Page manager help Robert Plant to destroy this project. It wasn´t the unique time Robert gets in the middle of something great done by Jimmy Page, he did the same when The Firm (Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers, Crish Slade) becomes a big success.
I've always liked David Coverdale on his own. I had Whitesnake's album back in '87 and I liked it, a lot. I've always thought he a deep, sexy English accent. He also seems like a real stand-up guy but, it's just weird seeing him in place of Plant. I remember this collaboration in the early 90s and people griping about it because they were calling Coverdale a Plant knockoff and things of that nature. I can't comment on the album because I haven't heard it. But, it's hard seeing Coverdale & Page w/out thinking of Plant & Page. I do agree that this collaboration may've gotten Robert to reconsider a Zeppelin reunion of sorts.
Omg it's so funny i started watching some Coverdale/Page uploads and i stumbled on this interview and i scrolled down on the comments and lo and behold I see that you have commented on this interview. You know the more i watch Coverdale the more i have grown to like him. He doesn't seem to be the bombastic rockstar i initially accused him of. He seems very likable and genuine and the collaboration between him and Page was a great idea. The album is very good and the live shows are good. I would guess that the only reason Page ended their collaboration was because of the Page/Plant reunion, otherwise Coverdale and Page certainly would have had success making a few more albums and tours. They both certainly look like they were into it. We may have missed out on some good Coverdale/Page albums by them ending their collaboration after just one album.
@@surfshack2 I think David Coverdale is a decent guy too. Who knows what would've happened? I'm not sure how old Coverdale is. Jimmy is 77. I assume he can still play guitar? If one or both have the itch to tour, maybe they can get together? Mick and Keith still rock. This time, I don't think Robert will do it. After the 2007 show, he said no and again in 2014. So, we'll see.
I don't know if it's just me, but Jimmy seem to think they're piecing together a possibly worthwhile project, whilst David thinks he's embarking on a bromance.
+Giambattista Vico OMFG you're soooo right. David goes on and on about how what they have is "special", their commitment, their anniversary, etc. freaking ETC, while Jimmy Page is sitting there like "Ho, what's your name again?"
+Giambattista Vico I got the same impression too. Coverdale seems like a huge Jimmy fanboy, while Jimmy seems like he's absolutely had enough of such affection and just wants to make good music.
You guys are hilarious. I got the same sort of vibe. I do think though, despite the fan boyishness of Coverdale, he comes across as an articulate, intelligent, polite, and respectful guy. The more I get to know of him, the more I like him. Admittedly, I had only a passing interest in Whitesnake during their glory years but I really like Coverdale as a person (from what I know of him anyway).
I seen Zeppelin on two hits of 4-way windowpane back in 76? Somewhere around then. Anyway,it was totally awesome. And I had sex with a hot blonde, total stranger, at a Whitesnake concert back around 1987 in Chicago. But I wasn't on acid then. Good memories.
+Bob Kerbs I saw Zeppelin in Chicago '77 (no acid that time, I was pregnant with my son) I did that at Jeff Beck concerts in the late '60s& early '70s in Chicago...great memories,
+pinkmondy Yeah, it was '77. I couldn't quite remember the year. I think it was their last tour before John died. Was it the stadium or the Amphitheater? .
+Bob Kerbs Ya know, I don't remember, but I do remember people tossing cherry bombs and there was a ton of smoke...by the time I got out to the parking lot I threw up outside the car...I didn't partake of anything because I pregnant but it was an awesome concert! I was almost 23 then...aaahhh the good old days.
Timing and Plant. This was in the grunge era so a lot of the big rockers from the 70s and 80s were immediately less relevant. This dovetails into why they only toured Japan. I've read accounts they did some testing for US shows and the sales were sluggish. Then Plant got dropped into it with MTV wanting to do the Unledded thing and Plant called Jimmy and that brought Coverdale/Page to a formal close. I'd have taken Coverdale/Page 2 any day of the week over the awful Unledded. I still can't believe Jimmy went along with tearing apart Kashmir and in the finale of the song adding the Black Dog riff. Still makes me vomit just a little. Kashmir was vibe art not tear it to pieces because you can.
Welllllllllllllll, at the beginning, Jimmy Page does all but come out and say "screw that uninspired hack" lmao. That was a rather tumultuous time in the plant/page relationship.

"Shortsighted." Jimmy being subtle. That might define how he feels about Plant since 1980. I'm sure there are a few other choice words in there too which he's struggled to keep out of the public arena. I did like the one where he said just in the last 5 years he was sick of Plant playing a reunion question ("I have nothing to do") in the media and getting tongues wagging when Jimmy knows damnwell Mr. Ego is just stroking the public's affection for Zeppelin when he had zero interest in anything more with Page or Jones. It's actually hurtful to Jimmy. Plant is the ex who keeps you just close enough just to wound you. The guys an asshole under the charm.
They are both a bunch of assholes who know how to do business and keep Zeppelin albums selling. Still love them, they wouldn't be where they are right now if they didn't know how to stay in the game. I just wish Robert wasn't such a dick to David, who was obviously honoured to work with Page and all of this was special to him. You make a great point - Robert wishes to keep Jimmy to himself but doesn't want to reform Zeppelin and doesn't want Jimmy to collaborate with anyone else.
@@andreparoni Clarksdale was a sad offering. More of soulless Plant offering. All the things that make Jimmy the musical wizard, Robert made him leave out. In short, Clarksdale is a Plant solo LP with Jimmy guesting.
As a lad who was born and bread in Redcar . Where did David Coverdale get that posh Home Counties accent.. ?? One of the best Rock/Blues vocalists .. But well up his own arse to the point of comedy.. And his treatment of John Sykes after writing 1984 . Was nothing short of SHITE !!! You may have gained way more respect David , If you kept it real.. Little Lord fonteroy.. Clearly talented. However your treatment of your fellow musicians was appalling... One swallow does not make a summer...
David's copying Richard Burton's accent. I think his reference was listening to War Of The Worlds. A world away from that guy who drawled about swallowing flies on The California Jam in a thick Yorkshire accent. Nothing wrong with improving oneself, but his accent is affected.
Envidioso Robert? No, celoso quizás. O Plant o nada. Es lo que hay.
Well, in hindsight, Coverdale has ALWAYS been a good guy & a professional. Page went after Coverdale because, I think at the time, Plant & Page weren't really on good terms . I think it was probably a "ha! well then, watch this Robert!" . I can only imagine the conversation btw Page & Coverdale . Perfect plan at the time . Page certainly needs to do something before Christ comes back, though......
I'm not sure if this was still the period where jimmy used to do very heavy drugs, I mean, he stopped a while ago but I'm not sure exactly at what age he stopped. Probably they where so used to this that kinda became an attitude of them. I don't know, but I like when they do this. It's cool

Robert was jealous cause page forced his hand and deep down he knows coverdale can sing as good as him
Nope.
zjimmy the master
Who s that weird interviewer
An alien from outerspace
Pagey's last great album.
No love for page and the black crowes ?
Bobby Dean last great album of new material. Agreed.
what about Walking Into Clarksdale?
and Coverdale's

DON T FORGET DARIE BOUTBOUL AND JIMMY PAGE AND DAVID COVERDAL
David's copying Richard Burton's accent.
I think his reference was listening to War Of The Worlds.
A world away from that guy who drawled about swallowing flies on The California Jam in a thick Yorkshire accent.
Nothing wrong with improving oneself, but his accent is affected.
Coverdade, Page & Cláudio Cavalcante
The next project
Take me 4 a little while
Envidioso Robert? No, celoso quizás. O Plant o nada. Es lo que hay.
Were they stopped by burocracy ?
Well, in hindsight, Coverdale has ALWAYS been a good guy & a professional. Page went after Coverdale because, I think at the time, Plant & Page weren't really on good terms . I think it was probably a "ha! well then, watch this Robert!" . I can only imagine the conversation btw Page & Coverdale . Perfect plan at the time . Page certainly needs to do something before Christ comes back, though......
@Garegh62 You lost me at "Robert Plant clone." Are you THAT musically uneducated? Or do you like holding Plant's water?
Reminds me of Dukes of Hazzard when the main characters were replaced with look alikes....
Que hermoso hombre ,, David Coverdale,, l love him
WOW THEY ARE FINE LORDY LORDY LORDY THANK YOU FOR GIVING US LADIES THE MALE SPECIES ✊🏾
have a drink EVERY time they fiddle with their noses
(can you guess WHY?)
They don’t seem coked up at all.
I'm not sure if this was still the period where jimmy used to do very heavy drugs, I mean, he stopped a while ago but I'm not sure exactly at what age he stopped. Probably they where so used to this that kinda became an attitude of them. I don't know, but I like when they do this. It's cool
They don't seem coked up at all here, Coverdale is talking in a wonderful manner and so is Jimmy.
LISTEN TO DAISY CHAINSAW's "ELEVENTEEN".... when Robert Plant was asked if Zep were as good live as ppl say, he said they were as good as DAISY CHAINSAW!
Coverdale is speaking received English?!! 😮
Just proper English. What does "received English" mean anyway?
That was a fine album these guys did together. Bit unnerving they seem to wearing so much make up in this interview, but there you go...
That's tv for you 😃
@@juliestrauss5988 Yup. MTV era through and through.
Everyone in the business wears makeup, and that is not a bad thing. It just helps incase the lighting is not right and makes everything look good on camera.
Love David's voice And Jimmy's guitar playing but to be honest not a fan of Robert plant
Beautiful!
technically Jimmy owns Led Zeppelin and he shoulda reformed the band with David as singer, Coverdale coulda easily pulled off the vocals
Never. Jimmy only want Plant. Its Led Zeppelin.
How many court cases did these two have ?
Did the interviewer turn into transgender during the show. First there was a blonde with long hair then a short hair brunette shows up on camera.
@1.20 Wtf!
Look like 2 old women off Dynasty.....
Best guitar player David ever worked with was Ritchie Blackmore. Sorry Page😁
