IELTS British Council vs. IELTS IDP: Which one to choose?

- Many IELTS aspirants go through the dilemma of choosing between the IDP and the British Council and we know you are also facing the same confusion, that’s why you are reading this post. Right?
There are facts and opinions about these two organisations and we’ll delve into both facts and opinions, to help you make the right decision.
So, let’s begin!
IELTS is jointly owned by three companies:
· Cambridge Assessment English
· British Council, which is a UK based organization.
· and IDP (International Development Program) which is an Australia based educational organization.
The IELTS exam is put together or written by Cambridge Assessment English and is conducted by IDP and the British Council.
Now, in some parts of the globe, the British Council is in charge of IELTS exams, in other countries IDP runs IELTS exams, and then there are countries like India where both the entities conduct the exam, this means a candidate who wants to book the IELTS test will have two different choices, this confuses many candidates as they are not sure which one to choose: IDP or British Council.
Well to answer your question, “Where to take IELTS: IDP or British Council?”, you can take IELTS from any of these two agencies.
Like I mentioned earlier, these two agencies conduct the test, but they do not write them which means you will get the same test no matter which agency you choose - the format, the questions or content, everything will be the same.
For instance, if on a particular date, student A is taking IELTS with British Council and student B is taking the exam with IDP, both the tests will have the same content or questions. No difference at all!
So, you can take the IELTS exam conducted by any of the agencies. It’s just a matter of availability of the test date, for instance, if the test dates offered by British Council are more suitable to you than the ones offered by IDP then go with British Council.

Is idp will provide the hard copy of result sheet or not? 🤔
Hello! Yes, IDP does provide you with a ahrd copy of the result which is known as Test Report form (TRF). This is generally printed after 13 days of the test day. You can collect your TRF from IDP IELTS offices.

Do your exam at British Council, If you booked IDP, it will take 3 months to issue results. they are 3rd party so they still have to submit your papers to British Council and wait in the queue.
Totally agree, I did my written exam on 30th of october and already been 15days and no clue about speaking test. Phone lines are not answered and customer service is minus. They didn't know how to talk to the customer. Highly dissapointed. Because of their delay my documentations went upside down.
So sorry to hear this and I can understand that you were upset about the delay.
Some people wait for their results to be delivered to their physical address instead of tracking their result online. This might be because you don't know how to check or doesn't know you can check online👌
I attended all the test on 21st August 2021. It has been available online since 5th September (15days only) and you can print it if you want. I went to the centre where I took the test to receive the Test Report Form(TRF) on 9th September 2021.
There was this misconception that BC are even strict with their markings😂

Just opt BC instead of IDP because marking in BC is very lenient whereas IDP usually gives very low scores in one module so that the test taker re-appears in test and by doing this they earn more money and make fool of people trying to crack it in one go.
They do same thing with me also 😭

But I heard currently they accept only if bank above 6..

Stay out of BC.. Examiner behavior is very adamant and rude as part of speaking. I would like to file a complaint on BC for playing with our time and money

UPDATE August 2021 - There are no options now..IDP has taken over BC so the only option remaining is IDP.
Thats true for Indian students. Outside India, BC and IDP are still two different entities.

I took ielts academic in august and September through British council and IDP .
Exams are same , there is absolutely no different
I’d prefer prefer british Council because of the
following reasons :-
(1) Easy to apply online
(2) they will give your result which test form results ( hard copy for free ) while idp doesn’t give it hard copy anymore since February 2020
(3)Idp gives us only soft copy of our results
For bc and idp u got same question paper or diff questions
