    you have to consider the one offs as well. I put my son in for a 4th choice hunt in NM for the SW region. he was granted a Youth hunt in unit 15 which is considered high demand. now remember high demand youth is not available to out of state residents, he was drawn and he harvested a nice 8 point. He is an AZ resident. if you would like pics I will send. Was the best time we have spent together, only problem was we had 8 days for the hunt and he harvested on the second afternoon. was 60 deg during the day had to leave that day. would have loved to spend the rest of the hunt hanging out with him. Semper Fi!!

    You should really add South Dakota to the mule deer and antelope hunts. Archery is over the counter for both with lots of public hunting areas for both species. Also good chance for rifle after 3 years for both. Now elk the only chance an out of state hunter has is the habitat hunt raffle for one tag.

    As a resident of one the western states Randy listed, I think it’s funny that people think that these videos reduce the chances of a resident drawing a tag in a premium hunt or that they increase non-resident hunter numbers (overcrowding). Those numbers are determined by the state wildlife agency, not by nonresident applications. I also find the “in-your-face” “they’re our elk too” attitudes of a lot of nonresidents amusing. As Randy has pointed out on numerous occasions, the game animals belong to the residents of the state, so our game agencies have every right to restrict nonresident hunting for the benefit of residents. To be clear, I’m not against nonresident hunters. I know you guys put a lot of money in state coffers to make hunting better for us all and I thank you and hope you have a great hunt.

      I think the issue that a lot of people are having these days is that 15 years ago, the hunting out west was either all OTC or the tags were extremely easy to draw. (I don’t know that for sure since I’ve only been hunting out west for the last 9 years but I have been told that by some friends that are residents of Arizona). Since the UA-cam personalities like Randy and others have come along and educated the entire country on how easy it is to go hunting out west, hundreds of thousands of new people have now started putting in applications over the years in every western state, thus, making it harder to get tags, point creep is high, etc. The number of applicants have gone through the roof but the animal population has stayed the same and the tag numbers have to stay the same or decrease in a lot of cases.
      So we all know that the states issue a determined amount of tags. That’s not the problem. The problem for some is that they use to get a tag every year and now they are getting tags every 3rd or 4th year.
      Personally, I like that more people are hunting. I just think that if there are going to be more hunters, then states should work to increase the resource so that more people can hunt.

      I totally agree with you, but as someone who has a 'secret' family spot in Idaho as a utah resident, that has slowly gotten more roads and people over time, (we really were the first people hunting in that area) its just ridiculous that residents are so entitled to there spot. Same with a spot in Wyoming, this guy said "those are my mountains" (not in a hostile way) and I told him look, my great-great grandpa has been ranching sheep here for over a hundred years, dont be like that.

      @@shanedupont9116 You're correct. I'm from AZ and I think the game and fish department needs to come up with better strategies for applicants. Something like once you draw a tag you should have to wait a certain period to reapply for that hunt. It's kind of ridiculous that in an Antelope hunt I apply for there's over 5,000 applications for 30 tags. I've been applying for over 23 years and have a total of 25 points and haven't been drawn and I'm a resident!! I know it's rare but I know of a guy who's drawn this tag 3 times in 6 years. Tyler you're not wrong, but where I live the guys smashing the UTVs through the forest to try to round up a bull aren't nonresidents. The guys shooting past other hunters to beat them to a shot aren't nonresidents. The guys setting up camp weeks ahead of time to claim public land ahead of time aren't nonresidents. The guys who get their tires cut, who look out for one another and share information usually are. Now where I used to live the sense of entitlement was extremely high among the out-of-state guys, so I know it happens.

    Good video for diy guys on a budget. I think it's also worth mentioning that if someone only wants to hunt out west a handful of times in their life, they should consider an outfitter. I know, its expensive. But it is doable for a blue collar guy that can save money. It streamlines the process, and a general or low point tag in a so so unit, can become an awesome hunt on privately owned/managed land. Many people don't realize the additional costs of going diy on public, not to mention the work it takes. However, it is very rewarding when it comes together. Thanks Randy

    • @lukedavis8912
      @lukedavis8912 2 роки тому +2

      Gonna call BS. public will always be cheaper then private. I know some amazing guides, and that private land, high price tag stuff just isn't it. It's too easy and at the point your dropping 15k for an animal, you've lost what hunting's all about. When you do that you've lost every aspect but putting a trophy on the wall and looking good. I stand by the fact that it's the guides animal- they are out there scouting 24/7 taking notes, doing the work, just for some rich dude to move his index finger. I don't have a problem with private land hunting, I just think you couldn't actually kill a wild animal if you tried. And I have nothing wrong with guides either. But when you throw it all together, its just like "dude, WHY are you hunting? Is it an ego thing? Cause if anyone who your trying to impress will know you full of crap. And it sure as heck aint a meat thing. And I don't think its a nature thing, your staying at a 5 star 'cabin' closer to a Trump Tower then an actual cabin." And I know this is pretty long, and I know this is a stereotype, as some people who hunt private really can know what they're doing. But its just not it

My question is why is the hunting out west for these animals seems so crazy with a much land is there and less population of people? I get you on the trophy thing. I have private places I can hunt here, but I only go a few days a year. I spend most of my time on public land in Georgia instead because a trophy there is harder earned. If I wanted meat or antlers, private is the way to go. It does make a man wonder sometimes what am I doing. I just wonder what you out west hunters would do with a challenge of a public land whitetail in the piedmont of Georgia, prolly lost like I would be there, but your shot here late season will prolly be 30 yards or less and that open range just seems like if you can't kill something there, you can't hunt.

    the thing about Utah is 1) more than half the state is LE Elk, which is why its so hard, BUT we pull the some of the biggest bulls every year. Its what you get for the wait (possibly) 2) Only a tiny part of the state is LE deer, and we have a 'rut' limited entry muzzloader hunt in all the general seasons. Also since the hunts are broken down to archery, muzzloader, and rifle, you really can draw good deer as a non res.

    • @jcarry5214
      @jcarry5214 2 роки тому

      It's half LE and entire units are private/CWMU. I like our general spike/bull unit system though. I also really like the weapons breakdown for all species. I think it's a great way of managing opportunity within the insane habitat we have, which is . It confused me to death when I first moved here but I think it's an excellent way to manage the weird, broken up habitat we have.

    • @lukedavis8912
      @lukedavis8912 2 роки тому

      I really like are weapons break down too. I think it’s something Utah does great. But more then half of “viable elk hunting units” take forever to draw. A bunch of the general tags are beyond shiz (Henry mountains) or large amounts of private (chalk creek? I think it’s that one) or 300 elk for in 1,000,000 acres because the farmers in Wyoming can’t stand the elk wintering in there fields (north slope). But I’m serious at least 2 or 3 units have so little success it’s a joke, like box elder

    • @jcarry5214
      @jcarry5214 2 роки тому

      @@lukedavis8912 Yeah reading the hunt planner descriptions for some of the units is pure comedy. as in "there are only 30 elk in this entire unit on a good day. often there's zero. Do not bother hunting this unit, we're not sure why it's even a thing we're discussing. population objective = zero."
      I just downloaded the 2022 application book, I forgot how maddening it is that we can only apply for one LE hunt. Not getting to apply for at least 2 is so dumb. Nonres can collect a point in each species every year and they only get 10 percent of the tickets, why can't we earn points? I guess we need less of the points so we're supposed to just apply to a different species during the waiting period? I dunno. It's a strange way of managing opportunity fairness. So what if I get all 3 in one year and have to hunt general only for at least 6-7 years, that's a me problem.

    • @oakleylarsen3480
      @oakleylarsen3480 7 місяців тому

      As a Utah resident, it’s very much so resident oriented. Resident wait times are 1/2-1/3 of the non resident. The thing about the general tags is that they aren’t meant to be good hunts, they’re designed to control units with poor populations and genetics, or units that aren’t supposed to have any elk that now do have elk. The spike tags are a lot of fun and limited entry your walking away with a good bull, but OTC takes a lot of scouting.

The decent units take 10 years at least, and the 2 or 3 premiums take 20. My cousin drew a Henry mountain tag at 16 with 2 points though, so there is that luck factor sometimes.
    Edit: added the word deer. And the likelihood of a resident or non resident drawing a premium tag is closer to 5 percent. My dad who is a resident has put in for 1 of 3 premium hunts, depending on the health of the unit, for 18 years. He has something like 19 or 20 points from just buying a couple points. He still hasn't drawn, I expect him to draw in the next year or two though. 20 years to draw is exactly 5% success.

      @@lukedavis8912 shit I haven't even drew a general season tag in 2 years. And I never said there aren't big deer on general units, but they are harder to find. In the he southeast unit we used to hunt before we had to draw, and before they cut up the units, it's full of big deer. Consumers canyon was where we usually went, but down by Monticello was always great. The biggest deer I've ever actually seen were in the backcountry areas between scofield and price. But then we had the freedom to hunt any of that area, it's harder when you have so many units and are constricted to a smaller area. If just means a lot more hiking for me to get away from the damned people. But a sure bet for a resident nonresident who's not paying someone to do everything but aim their gun for them is a limited unit, they will see world class deer, and not really have to work so damn hard to do so.

There's other spots in those units you can hunt. And yes OFC you have to get off the road. That's a given. Its a shame that more and more of the tags in many states are getting to 10 plus years. And with them being 10 plus years now most applicants with none or some points will never catch them. I have a unit in WY that I have been applying for the last four years, started just one point behind and now I'm 1.5 behind.
    Ive been in the non res point game for fourteen years now and in the last few years the point creep and applicants increase has never been seen before.
    In most cases if you are just getting started look at units that take 1-3 points. Those are the units you will be chasing to draw and will never catch the ones that take 5 plus. That is the current trend

    Idaho calls it a controlled hunt because its a controlled number of tags. Its not a general or unlimited tag hunt. It makes a lot more sense than calling it a limited entry hunt. They aren't limited on the amount that can enter the draw. They are limited on the amount that can draw. They should be called limited draw not limited entry.

    Randy the information is good, but I’ll be the first to say is that as a Non Resident thinking about putting in for NM elk, your statement that you’re only investing $65 is a very big misrepresentation when in reality you’re also fronting the $548 for a Standard hunt or $793 for a Quality/ High Demand hunt when you apply. For the blue collar DYI hunter who more than likely will be putting that on in a credit card to not tie up his well earned money regardless if they hold out until the March 16th deadline. They won’t get confirmation until late April and within 10 days of a rejection notice will be refunded minus the $13 application fee. Those that have saved up and/or can front the $600-$800 can avoid the interest they’ll be racking up during that month or more they’re into the draw cycle. So it’s not as simple as you make it sound. You may want relate a little more to your audience. I understand it’s not an issue for most but it’s a big deal to others in the DYI hunting community that can pick and choose where to devote their time, money and energy.
