Thanks Randy and Gohunt. I like how he broke down seasons for each category per state. That really helps and opens my eyes a little more. Now time for one covering Pronghorn hunts. My goal is to hunt them in every state that I can DIY style.

Being new to hunting (2 years) and living in TN, all this information makes my brain hurt. I am sure once I get into Insider it will all clear up some.

i felt the same way, wasn't until i committed to an elk hunt in Sept that it started to come together. I put in for Wyoming, if i dont draw then i'm going to get an OTC tag in CO

Love the first part about every hunt you learn something quote. Fred Eichler said that every hunt is a success. Just depends on your perspective

If all you're concerned with is hunting every year, Oregon is an option. If you want to see or kill elk, not so much. But you can hunt unsuccessfully every year!

NV short-term seems to mostly be dumb luck for both residents and non-residents. I got extremely lucky and drew a resident rifle bull tag last year with only 1 point. With a 7 year wait now, I really appreciate the information as I'll be looking to go out of state in the near future. Thanks, Randy.

Other than otc, you’ll need to to add b/w 4-10 years to each of these (if you’re just starting out)

Thanks Randy....nice to have someone break it down cause it can get frickin confusing when you look at new states!! I am thinking a few years out as my $$ situation should allow it by then!

Ok. So, I have a question. What's the difference between bonus points and preference points?

I wonder when their going to start adding states where elk are being reintroduced like Kentucky and Michigan? It would help back off the pressure that the animals face in the western states as well and might even lower non-resident tags but my first choice is Colorado since I'll be moving there and will be a resident so my odds would be different.

And we wonder why point creep is so bad

  • @elkhunter9244

Question: If you are working towards a long term plan in any of the points systems and you draw a mid-term unit or a short term unit, you will likely lose your points and have to start over towards the long term hunt....correct? I know here in UT if you buy a leftover LE tag (which there aren't ever any) or a 2nd choice hunt you forfeit all your accrued points. So, a person would have to draw a mid-term plan hunt as their second choice in a state that does not take your points away for doing so.

Much appreciated Randy and Team!!! I am a sub of GoHunt & Randy Newberg (and others) in an effort to learn as much as possible and try to put notes together and all that. I'm hopeful that one day I'll be able to go west. I'm a "meat" hunter and would be more than blessed to harvest a cow. I've had the opportunity to try elk for the first time. I grilled it and WOW, very flavorful. I am used to whitetail here in my state of VA but elk is riffriggindiculous!! If you don't mind me askin. When applying for a state for elk, is there anything (categories, season's) that would up my odds to draw for even an elk tag? Or are OTC (Do I actually need to be physically there to purchase) the way to go. Jus tryin to figure it out. Always appreciated sir. Have a great wknd.

Sorry. My mistake. "When applying for a state for elk, is there anything (categories, season's) that would up my odds to draw for even an elk tag? " I meant to say cow tag not elk. Thank you.

@@VAHunter20120 Hey Scott! Good question. If you want to check out your odds for drawing a Cow Elk tag in CO, just go to the INSIDER section of goHUNT, click on Draw Odds, and then you can take a look at Cow Elk hunts and see the odds. As a member, you probably already know that we have the most accurate draw odds out there, and you can check out antlerless hunts in any state through the Draw Odds system. If you have any other questions please drop us a line at insider@gohunt.com

Or marry a girl from the mountain west so it's an easy sell. My wife goes and visits family in Utah or Idaho while I go hunting. It works out pretty well.
