We have a 15.4 channel Definitive Technology Dymension Series speaker system in one of our new premium Cinema Demo Rooms. The projector is JVC's NZ8 and the receiver is Denon's new A1H 15.4 channel receiver and wow we are loving this Home Theater demo room!!
Hi there - great questions. I've been looking through my notes and I don't see too many specifics, unfortunately. However, for the demos in the main theater room without subwoofers, the speaker system was DM-80s for the mains, the large/active center channel, DM40s for the wides, four DM70s for side/rear surrounds, and six DM-95s. The receiver was the Denon A1H, and correction was performed with Audyssey limited to 300Hz and below. I'd assume the same correction was applied to the main theater room system when the four subs were added, however I didn't note the crossover points.
That is a pretty good size center channel flagship! I have a custom center speaker that is even larger if you can believe that! It is 64 inches wide 10 inches high and 18 inches deep and weighs 110 pounds! It has 8 inch woofers, four of them 6 inch midranges, four of them as well and two tweeters! It is my pride and joy and is my favorite custom speaker in my 5.1 set up! I also have towers for the front left and right and a 15 inch subwoofer that’s about 150 pounds.
Great review Todd Anderson. I believe you had a great experience in listening to the DM80’s both in Cinema and Music setup. I’ve been a great fan of Acoustic Research (AR TSW 610 & 910) speakers and ever since they stopped production is when I stepped into the Definitive Technology from their BP2000 till the BP9080x. Even now I am using their PF18TL subwoofers. As you mentioned the sound experience from these speakers are astounding and mostly value for the money invested when compared to other brands that are devilishly overpriced just for the same of brand name. That said, I had a few things to inquire with you. From your review, I’ve noticed that the components used in the Dymension series; are they designed and engineered by Polk Audio, especially the newly designed Aluminum oxide domes? Does it mean that Polk Audio and Definitive Technology use the same speaker components made by Polk Audio? I was of the impression that Def Tech had their own R&D for their speaker components. Appreciate if you could clarify. Secondly, if you could share which of the Marantz or Denon amps were used for the DM80s both for music and cinema? I have also noticed that the demo rooms were equipped with Classe power amplifiers. Are they also used for powering the DM80? I am currently looking forward to the launch of the DM80's in the UAE to purchase it. Once again thanks to you and your team for the great review. Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks !
Hey Todd, Great content! have the BP 9060s and dual SVS PB 2000 pros. If I wanted to direct the bass to my subs but also the powered subwoofers in the towers, what would be the best settings in terms of small vs large? Or do you think it's best to set all speakers to small to let the subs handle all the bass? Thanks in advance?
If these are anything like every other speaker (with a powered woofer) that definitive technology has released previously, it's only a matter of time before the plate amps give out and you'll be chasing replacements. So far, I've had the Bp8009 (failed amp), supercube iii subwoofer (failed amp) cs8090 (failed amp), BP9060s (failed amps on both channels). See a pattern? Definitive technology refuses to acknowledge their design flaw and don't take care of their customers. By far the worst customer service as they'll just keep sending you amps and tell you to do the swap yourself. Such a shame because when their speakers work, they sound amazing. At this price point, I'd look into other brands like svs. They have amazing customer service. My advice for anyone considering def tech, run the other way and don't look back. They don't deserve your hard earned money. P.S. if you don't believe me, go read the reviews on Amazon for the 9000 series. Or read some of the comments above 💩💩
Here's a question....how does it compare to Arendal or Perlistens? Def Tec has always been my favorite, but now they have some powerful competition don't they?
Arendal or especially Perlistens would absolutely blow Def Tech’s out of the water. But, they really shouldn’t even be compared because they are completely different price points. They aren’t direct competitors. Perlistens, if you can afford them, are absolutely the way to go.
Yeah it is very disappointing that they have regressed in those areas to further cut costs, their previous SuperCube subwoofer models had rigid cast aluminium baskets & gold plated speaker terminals, on their latest Descend subwoofer models are now stamped steel baskets with nickel plated speaker terminals :(
Yea. Since being bought out by Sound United, they are attempting to squeeze every penny out of their customers that they can. The speakers are getting cheaper and cheaper to produce, and they’re selling them for more and more $. Not to mention they have basically completely dismantled their customer Service section, destroying the good will and loyalty that they had curated for many years. Very sad and disappointing. Also, haven’t had a chance to look at the dymension series amps, but at least with their 9000 series bipolar towers, they were STILL slathering evil yellow glue all over their amps, virtually guaranteeing that the amp wouldn’t last longer than a few years. The yellow glue breaks down and turns brown and not only does it become condictive, it also becomes corrosive. So it will either short out whatever it’s touching, OR, it will corrosively eat through the legs kf the components it gets on. There is literally nothing else to call it other than planned obsolescence. Blatant planned obsolescence. I’m stunned they haven’t had any class action lawsuits. You can find dozens of thousands of people with dead def tech amps out there. They’re everywhere.

What Atmos speakers are using
Hello. Can you tell us how the speakers were setup, as in large/small,crossover settings etc?
Great content
Thank you

Hey there… missed your questions. Will circle back around when I get on a laptop!

Great review. Can you tell more about the DM30, like the sound and the power.
My DM30 center speaker was ordered today and I'm trying to find a review on it.
Hello master, is it Klisch, B&W or Definitive in the home theater system?

@@kilgoretrout4461 LOL...thanks for the quick response.
I have the bp 9060s.
For a 2500$ speaker, a stamped basket for the sub is a bit disappointing.
I agree with you 100% WAY overpriced!!!
Right.. classic def tech

Avoiding DefTech....my DN8 stopped working in just one year.
