I was an upset youngster that day, but what a game. All these years later and Gonzaga is a #1 seed and in the title game. I remember people laughing wondering who was Gonzaga going into 99 tournament. what a team and what a run they made.
@@SpacelySprocketz ah that's awesome! Yeah, it's been a long time coming. Personally tho, Id put my money on UConn for this one. You guys have been winning by such a large clip and not sure if Gonzaga's defense is gonna be up to the challenge.
The yukon team that started this dynasty we have today in 2024. 6 titles in 25 years, Damn thats nearly 1 every 4 years., Dynasty like NE pats or Bama crimson tide. Incredible.
I remember thinking, “We’re finally a lock for the final four”. I had never heard of Gonzaga. What an incredible game and what a program The Zags turned out to be..GREAT MEMORY.
This was the game that started it all. For nearly a decade Jim Calhoun was regarded as always the bridesmaid never the bride. He got shit for years for never getting to the final four. Fast forward a decade after this and 3 national championships later he goes down as one of the top 2 or 3 college basketball coaches of all time.
@@TheWakeup011 he coached until he was in his 70s. Certainly not a spring chicken. He also coached at Boston University like 15 years before he took the UConn job.
At the time, I remember rooting for Gonzaga really hard, thinking….wouldn’t it be amazing if a mid-major like Gonzaga made the Final Four?! Since then, we’ve had several mid-majors make the Final Four like……James Madison, VCU, Butler (twice)…..and Gonzaga (twice)…..which isn’t really considered a mid-major anymore. Having said all that, I suppose Butler might not be technically a mid-major any longer by being in the Big East….but I think they still are.
Man he had homeboy on the side for the three. And with the way Zaga was clicking, it would have went in. And if not, still time for a tap out or a quick put back. Either way, Uconn was obviously better and was the only team to be able to put away Duke that year (And they did, thank god)
24 years later, history repeats itself 🎉🎉🎉

Congrats from a UConn Fan! I hope Gonzaga cuts down the nets Monday night!!!!!!!!!
Great Game! and a really great tournament that year.
24 years later....
2023 elite eight rematch. We still owe them one. Let's do this Zags!
U. C. O. N. N, UConn, UConn, UConn!
@@itsjustacomment454 haha it's gonna be a fun rematch all these years later
@@knp33 no doubt. If you guys beat us, i hope you win it all. You will have earned it after all those years getting close.

The game that started it all was more than a decade before this game, you doofus
@@ejflor1313 actually it was the first time he got over the hump after a decade of near misses you inbred fuck. Can’t you fucking read?
Definately doesnt get the credit as a Knight, or A Dean Smith etc, but his national titles speak volumes.
Definately top 5 of all time in Ncaa Hoops.
I thought he would have coached longer @ UCONN. He would have dominated this era.

Game on. Go Zags.

I was PRAYING THE Zags would pull this off, knowing UCONN was the only team that could (and eventually would) beat Duke.
i was upset that gonzaga lost to uconn. gonzaga could won the whole thing if they win vs uconn
This was basically, the National Title game because Gonzaga lost by only 5 and Uconn went onto win the National Title this is my opinion however.
Do you know who UConn played in the national title game that year? I'm pretty sure that team that UConn played would have beaten Gonzaga as well.
No, they played a way more talented Duke team in the national championship and only won by 3
lol what a dumb statement.
Gonzaga would never have beaten Duke.
Wouldn’t have beaten Ohio State either.
