      REUSE is the BEST way to live a more low waste lifestyle!!! I preach that on my channel too. There are too many zero-wasters out there buying things and things and things and that is not necessarily low waste! It can be, but I think reuse is better :)

    So nice to see a table set with some mismatching plates. I think a huge part of our waste issue is linked with our ego. So as soon as one plate breaks and we can’t set a whole table it’s time to throw the whole set out and buy a new one!
    This reasoning is just ridiculous and we can do so much better if we just have fun mismatching plates from different sets that we find in the thrift store!

    • @kyleeburgess2420
      @kyleeburgess2420 3 роки тому +15

      I love the idea of this but I really love when plates and bowls stack nicely in the cabinet. If they stack nicely and store efficiently I'm totally down for mismatched dishes!

    • @SaveMoneySavethePlanet
      @SaveMoneySavethePlanet 3 роки тому +17

      Kylee Burgess that makes sense! I’m a big believer that none of us have to be perfect but rather all of us need to be a bit better. So maybe I buy less dishes, you eat less meat and someone else composts a lot. Together, we all contribute a huge amount to the movement and help the environment even though none of us is becoming a hermit.

    • @carnamilinga
      @carnamilinga 3 роки тому +15

      My kids taught me, that it's better to have a lot of mismatched dishes instead of having to buy matching ones over and over again, because things sometimes break just by a child looking at it. Almost everything in our cupboards is mismatched, thrifted or from my late grandparents. I surely won't spend money for anything new as long as my two boys are not 14+. It would be a waste of money and resources.

    • @TheSimpleEnvironmentalist
      @TheSimpleEnvironmentalist 3 роки тому +12

      the EGO! YES! I know so many people who don't want to have mismatched anything, but it is my aesthetic haha. I thrifted mmy dishes and they are ALL over the place but I love them :)

    • @Gittemary
      @Gittemary  3 роки тому +22

      I 100% agree, but mixing and matching plates and cutlery is so beautiful I think, and you'll never have to discard plates that don't fit, it's a win-win! My glasses, tablecloths, socks.. lol all look like that 🙌

    tip about wrapping paper (giftwrap)! if you're someone who loves wrapping presents the traditional way, just re use the wrapping paper from gifts you have received! just open presents carefully when they're given to you and 90% is good to use again. also always save colourful and pretty tissue paper from packaging for the same reason!

    • @carnamilinga
      @carnamilinga 3 роки тому +34

      That's what I grew up with. Every birthday and Christmas we would open our presents really carefully and fold the papers and ribbons afterwards and put everything in a bag, that we had for storing wrapping stuff. Also we didn't use sticky tape (because it was too expensive back then), so most of the paper was in a really nice condition and the ribbon was often made from fabric or it was just a simple cord, that could be reused and still looked good after using several times.

      I grew up this way too ( parents experienced the Great Depression of 1929) its a running joke in my family that we have reused the same brown wrapping paper for presents for the last 17 years !! Its so cool seeing it go backwards and forwards to family menbers each Christmas Eve , and it has little comments and dates from the years we have used it. We jokingly call it the family relic , but each year is a challenge to regift or make sinething fit our existing piece of brown oaoer lok . Its a case " of cutting your garment to fit your cloth " or in our case giftwrap! ( a well known idiom ) i love to think we have saved a few trees too ...
      I love GM idea of wrapping in cloth teatowels = a fantastic idea , sooooo useful ( & can be used as duster cloths , table spills , picnics , in your bag to wipe down a rained on bike seat etc ) simple yet brilliant !

Great video and super helpful, easy swaps. Thanks for this one Gittemary.

    • @marycharlebois6627
      @marycharlebois6627 3 роки тому +3

      @@Daphnaee Hi, I’m from 🇨🇦, out west in British Columbia. In the grocery stores the use of reusable tote/grocery bags at the checkout has just recently been permitted once again in most stores, however, we are still not allowed to use our produce bags. The bulk sections have been completely shut down in most major grocery stores since March. In smaller stores such as health food stores the bulk sections now pre-package everything in small vacuum sealed bags which, imho, completely contradicts the reason for having bulk bins in the first place. Our local health food store owner said she is not going back to “open/self-serve” bulk bins, even after the pandemic is over, because the single-use vacuum sealed plastic bags are easier, tidier, and it stops kids from reaching into the bins to have a free snack. As I’m sure you can appreciate, this really upsets me!!

      I ask the bagger for NO bags, to just throw everything in the cart/trolley. Then when I get outside, I put it in my reusable bags. They don't get in trouble, and I don't end up with more plastic bags.

    I would love it if you could make a video on sustainable house plants! I always love the plants in your background and love all of mine. But especially since keeping house plants is becoming more and more popular a lot more people don't think about where these plants and all the other stuff they use, comes from and how bad it can be for the environment.

    • @siljatusa3434
      @siljatusa3434 3 роки тому +4

      I only have a couple of "normal" house plants (and I got them second hand) and the rest are grown from food! I don't think most of them will produce any fruit because I live in such a cold and low light place, but it's so much fun watching them grow, especially because all the plants are different and you never know what each seed will end up growing into. It also means I don't have to buy plants in those plastic containers they come in, and it's soooooo much cheaper. Another fun and sustainable way to do gardening is to graft your plants and swap them with your friends 🌱

    • @coralovesnature
      @coralovesnature 3 роки тому +3

      I really love plants and gardening. To me, I think one of the biggest/ most important factors is selecting the right plants for your environment. For example, at work I have a golden pothos, which requires little natural lighting and little water/ care. I water mine ~once every 3-4 weeks and it has flourished over the past 2 years and is still growing crazy new vines. I even neglected it while I was working from home for several months due to Covid and it rebounded quickly upon my return. I think the same plant will last me many more years. At home I have an aloe plant and miniature cactus garden, which require little water also. I have had the same aloe plant for 3 years now and it has grown massively and is flourishing. I also have a miniature rose, which does pretty well in my sunny window. A lot of people neglect to research the plants they are getting and end up mis-caring for them, causing them to go through many plants since the improperly cared for plants will die quickly. Before getting a plant, I always do a lot of research about the conditions it needs to thrive to determine whether it is the right plant for me. For outdoor plants, I am very much an advocate of wildlife and native plant gardening. I think a good non-food garden, once established, should mostly sustain itself with little human intervention because the plants in it are properly suited to the environmental conditions of the garden and it is made up of perennial plants.

    • @Marie-hu7xd
      @Marie-hu7xd 3 роки тому +2

      @@coralovesnature Completly agree! I also think there are a lot of cheap and sustainable ways to grow plants. Like getting pots second hand or even dumper dive them (from a grave yard for example), getting cuttings from people near you instead of buying plants which have been grown in wasteful green houses and shipped for long distances. Or getting soil from your local compost facility and make your own fertaliser from foor scraps.

    If you ever want to cover up leftovers in the fridge, you can get silicone bowl lids with different sizes. That way, you don't even need to buy any containers!

    I was watching this video and I told myself I need to get that mimikaki stick thing, I look for it online to see where I can buy it and I REALISED I ALREADY HAVE IT!! I have a personal care kit that I mostly use to cut my nails and pluck my eyebrows but there was a piece in it that I never used because I never knew what it was for and it was the mimikaki stick!!! THE MORE YOU KNOW

    Hey love your videos!!! I was wondering if you could do a video about the steps people around the world have taken to fight climate change, deforestation, etc. I think the media and internet solely focus on things that are wrong with the world but what about the good? Plus I think we all need the mood lifter! Thanks and love ya gurl!🥰❤❤

      Yes i thought about that too! I saw it on an instagram of "Ecoyou" where they share positive environment-related "news" or Informations on mondays. They call it "positive monday" 😊
      I would love to see such thing here as well 😍🌱
