- Arcteryx Beta Lightweight Review NEW for 2024 - vs Beta AR
The updated Arcteryx Beta Lieghtweight is an excellent, packable hard shell that features the new ePE WPB tech and has a trim fit.
I compare it to the tried and true Arcteryx Beta AR for your sizing and feutures benefit.

Super comprehensive review with a bit of fun thrown in! Love it
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind note! 😊
Great review as always. I picked up one of these Fall 2023 (I think it's the same one you are reviewing?) and use it as my backcountry shell, since it is so light and clean. Love it. And I loved the comment about the Arcteryx designers - my goodness no one's shells fit me better - unreal. Take care, glad you are back out there!
You are ahead of me on this and I love that! Glad to hear it’s been a great backcountry shell for you. Hope to see you out there!
I believe it is slightly different, the Fall 2023 did not have the new epe environmentall friendly goretex membrane.
awesome review.. thank you for posting. Like the comaprison with the AR as well.
Thanks for watching! Really appreciate the kind comment!
Your reviews are some of my favorite. Keep it coming. Unfortunately, this jacket wetted out on me in 15 minutes of light drizzle. Super disappointed, wanted to love this jacket and wear it to death.
Thank you for the nice and helpful note. Major bummer on it wetting out. That is incredibly disappointing. I wonder if it’s a bad batch? Or the dwr failed? Whatever it is, it stinks. Sorry buddy.
Arc hits it out of the park with their fit. I'm 5'10" and between 230 and 245, and their XXL "fitted" allows me to wear my cerium or atom lt under my beta lt. I wish more companies understood that people around our size might actually have triceps and delts.
@@BigFuzzyGuy11 just ordered xxl, seems like it will be the right size for me too thanks
Already got mine before watching this video, but i totally agree with all of it. Great videos sir
Than you VERY much! I appreciate the kind note and I am thrilled that you have the jacket and agree with this. Happy adventures to you, Sir!
Great video. Noticed any differences with the new membrane. Also the ar has a drophood and not storm hood
Thanks! I have not noticed any difference in waterproofing. I did notice it is less noisy and more pliable. Which makes me happy. Good call on the Drophood. I missed that. I suppose that is due to the collar that is built in. Thanks for catching that!
@@Engearment good to know about the membrane thanks. And in all fairness they do make an ar with the storm hood now.
do you think the lightweight will be durable enough under a pack?
What trousers are you wearing?
Outstanding review. Would love your thoughts on stormhood vs drophood. I don’t wear hooded mid layers but the collar looks nicer on drophood and I rarely have my hood up, unless it’s raining. Curious if you’ve had a chance to compare them. Thanks.
Thank you so much! Really appreciate that. I don’t have any complaints about either hood design. I saw some discussion on Reddit, but I think it’s a bit of splitting hairs. Take care!
@ thank you!
i wonder is that better than previous beta LT, iam pi for my father as brithday gift
I tend to sweat a lot during ski touring. I’m looking for a base layer that will keep my warm but wick sweat the best. What base layer would you suggest ?
I feel you on that! I run very warm. I use 200 weight merino, yak or alpaca wool. Not too hot, and regulates temps very well.
will you be doing a beta SV review? im interested to see if it's something I can wear in the summer in rainy environments
Ohh that is a good idea. I do not have hands on the SV, yet. Let me see what I can line up. Thanks!
Good review ! I almost bought the lightweight but decided on the straight beta version......interesting thing is with the new membrane the beta actually has a 80d all around fabric rather then 80 and 40 that the beta AR has. Ultimately the beta was cheaper then the beta ar and should be more abrasion resistant than the lightweight option so I think I chose the right thing! Oh also can you do a review on the northface summit series superior wind jacket? Just saw it today and it looks pretty sweet
Hey! Thanks for the fun note! I had not had hands on the regular version of the Beta. That is fascinating to know that it is 80D. I did see that is less expensive than the AR. Sounds like you chose wisely!
I can ping our contact at North Face and see if we can get that lined up. Thanks for the idea! Take care
@@hanwagu9967 In the USA the prices are Beta - $400, Beta Lightweight $500, Beta AR $600. Not sure if the prices are different in others areas of the world. Perhaps I dont have all the info for other regions. But you are spot on with the material differences. Personally, I like the lighter weight and less noisy Lightweight version. Take care!
Great review. Any concerns about the DWR efficacy on this new Beta Lightweight? Quite a few reviews out there stating that the face fabric is simply not as effective at shedding water and can wet out pretty quickly.
Hey there! Thank you for the nice note! I have not had issues with DWR on ePE pants and jackets that we have tested over the last year or so. I am not sure what products or the situations of the other reviews, so I can not honestly speak to their situations. But it has been fine with the Patagonia, Gore, and other brands we have used. I know some people will be reluctant to try the new WPB membrane, and for them, the Gore-Tex Pro shell is still available. Which has a proven track record with waterproofness and durability. Hope that helps!
I bought the new one. The dwr suckssssss man. I work outside for a living so my rain jackets get tested in the rain all day long. The new version wets out so fast it’s not even funny. The beta LT did not give me these problems. They still have the beta LT versions out there right now. I would pick up one of those instead if you’re looking for one.
A rain jacket review should address whether the jacket is actually waterproof and breathable as it claims. I’m still looking for someone who reviewed this jacket and said something other than it has zippers and a hood. Not a single review has gotten the jacket wet. WTF. The Arcteryx website has more information stating it might wet out more easily than other Goretex jackets. I generally find the reviews on this channel thorough and informational, but a review of a rain jacket needs to address getting it wet. Otherwise this a clothing review for thinking you look cool around town in gorpcore.
Hmm. I hear what you are saying, but I would also like to point out that we tested the jacket in snowstorms, winter camping, rain and everything in between. It has been used for splitboarding as well as just dog walks in the rain. I read your comment and the artist in me just wants to ban you from the channel. So, I give you one more chance to be of use or I will happily kick you and your opinions out of here. I dont need more numbers. I only do these reviews for real people who actually care about how the gear works and where we test it.
Wetting out and even leaking on a 30 min bike ride through town
Ever used the kuiu ridgeline jacket? Curious the comparison between that and the Arc’teryx
Hello! I have used (and really like) many KUIU clothing but have not used the Ridgeline. Sorry I could not be of more help!
Do you recon I get this or the beta lt for going to school and obviously hiking aswell but will be used for school what would you recommend???
Yes, I would recommend this as everyday use as well as hiking and adventure. It looks really sharp and can play nicely in urban settings. But is capable! Take care
The new Beta Lightweight is a downgrade to the LT. Not as breathable and the ePE wets out a lot faster compared to legacy non PFC free goretex/dwr.
Speaking from experience or from what you read online? I ask because I have not had wetting out issues with the newer goretex over the last few years of testing. At least here in Colorado. I would love to learn more about your experiences with this WPB membrane.
Caveat emptor!!!! I purchased 6 Arcteryx shells. All of them fell apart. All of them. I gave one as a present, it fell apart. All fell apart at the seams. They supposedly were using incorrect glues.
The company does help with repairs , or money back. The price of these coats has gone through the roof. the company only reimburses for their failures at about one half the current price. I could argue their strategy either way, but i am not sure over all that it is a fair policy!!! I would buy a different brand if I were you.
Hmm. That is quite unusual. Sorry you have had the experience on several occasions. We have always had good experience with repair or replacement. In fact, one of our writers works at the arcteryx shop that does repairs. Just want the viewers to know how we have worked with them before. Hope you have better experiences with other brands.
