    Get rid of that huge bloody Tesco store where the north station should have never been knocked down, re-instate the station and tell the idiots in charge to get on with bringing back the railway. Haverhill needs it ASAP, the town is getting bigger and bigger.

      You’ll also need to demolish a few houses that are now built on the old track!...

    So sad that this has gone. Many happy memories of travelling along this line. Very nostalgic.

    Nostalgic journey...In 1967 I had 9 years old and I loved railway journeys. In those days we had only steam trains in our country . I miss them....

    In 1958 I walked from my house to linton station with my sister and mother to collect our brand new scooters which were coming by train from Robert style in Cambridge, never ever been so excited, seeing that train coming into the station, then watch the uniformed man un load the parcels and our scooters, and we used to go to Clacton on the train too, fun happy days, such a shame all those lines were closed, the roads would be so decongested

    My parents were the tenants at the Railway Inn Pub (adjacent to Pampisford Station) at this time. My Father took my brother and I on one of the final trips before they closed this line. Excellent to have found this.

      Thank you for watching and commenting. There have been many calls for the line to be re-opened but those in power don't hear them.

    What a thrill to find this - thanks for posting - I was born just too late to have a trip on the line (we lived at Long Melford) but I've been so interested in the story of its demise since my parents told me about it when I was young - this interest spurred me on to become a railwayman in 1981 and after 33 years I'm still enjoying it - the last station manager to be responsible for the line (Michaell Goddard) was made redundant from the post of Station Master at Whittlesford in early 1966 and was based at Sudbury - he continued to live at Whittlesford for the first few months of his new appointment used to cycle to Pampisford and travel to Sudbury by train - he will love to see this - thanks again

      What interesting comments. Thank you. Perhaps Michael Goddard can identify the conductor and perhaps also the driver (though only the back of his head can be seen) of the train. Please keep us informed, and many thanks again.

      The station worker briefly seen before the conductor was seen in Haverhill was Horace Eves, I believe he was a councillor on Haverhill Urban District Council!

    Thanks for posting this piece of railway history. So many line lost,so many mistakes made? Can you imagine all these lost lines being reinstated...then we would have a railway. I bet Mr Beeching and Mr Marples would`nt agree though?

    • @simonjames3845
      @simonjames3845 Рік тому

      WTF? Beeching wrote a report in 1963, Labour took over later the same year, did they cancel the report? NO, did they commission their own report? NO. They continued the closures, most carried out by Barbara Castle.

    One day people in charge will realise what damage has been done,by putting car`s before rail? So many great lines gone....its all about the MONEY folks??

      Many lines like this still remain in the Czech Republic, the service is often operated by 4 wheel railbuses. They will soon experience a similar fate, I suspect.

    You can just make out the bridge across the cutting as the train leaves Linton - about 1:30. I used to go and play on it as a kid back in the 80s! Unlike the now filled in bridge nr Cardinal's Green I think its probably still there.

      I agree. However, I deserve no credit for making the film. When I saw a copy of it in our village archives I contacted the late owner's family to ask for permission to post it here. They kindly agreed on condition that I would not mention names.

    would love for it to be rebuild and reopened

    • @rosmarinusofficialis
      @rosmarinusofficialis  7 років тому +1

      There is no chance of it being rebuilt and reopened. It would not be cost-effective. The deep cutting between Bartlow and Haverhill has been used as a landfill site and trees been planted on top.

    Hello i am a West Suffolk College student about to do my final project on my media course, i am making a documentary film about the Colne Valley Railway from the past to the present day showing how it has progressed and changed in its years of operation, will it be ok to use this footage for my project? to explain how Haverhill was the station that connected to the Colne Valley. full credit will be given to you for this, i also volunteer at the railway myself and if the project becomes good enough it may even play in the museum centre of the railway :D thankyou very much, kind regards Samuel Beamon

      I am sorry for not writing to you sooner, but I have been on holiday in Canada and only recently come back. I have now written to the owner of the original film to seek his permission.

      Hi I have a similar request I'm currently putting together a TV show about the recent renovation of the Bell Hotel/Pub in Haverhill and we have a section on the history of the town - would you be able to put me in contact with the owner of the footage to see if we could use a few seconds of in our show - neil.g@property-tv.co.uk. Many Thanks

    They should still operate a service OUT of Haverhill . They'd be plenty of customers wishing to escape to freedom

    Maybe not THE last train. The last train from Haverhill was mean't to be the 8.32pm to Sudbury...it ran late & it would have been very dark! Many thanks for sharing this. Do you have any more films of this line???

    • @rosmarinusofficialis
      @rosmarinusofficialis  9 років тому +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting, Robert. Unfortunately I have no more films of this nature. This one, taken by the father of the boys, is in our village archives, and I had to ask for permission from one of the "boys" to post it to youtube. I did not give it its title. Perhaps it was the last train from Cambridge that terminated at Haverhill? I did not live in this area then, but now I am not far from one of the bridges shown in the clip.

      We will never know I guess. I've been asked, who are the boys in the film? are they still local?

      WashingtonRobert Having attended the meeting in March in Haverhill about the problems of the A1307 I am aware of the attempts to re-establish the rail link. The four boys are still all resident in Cambridgeshire. Unfortunately I was asked not to mention their names. Sorry.
