The technology guru's are more interested in designing the products that people want. People mostly don't care much about music these days, it's abstracted to the point where any old crap does. I'd be happy just to go back to CD quality music FFS!
You don't need to go back as far as vinyl to see the difference - hell just grab an analogue to digi CD, like Angel Dust, or Ten, and you can hear so much more than modern CD's or MP3's or anything - we need to get that back, and we do not need anything more than 44khz IMO
Pono and the other options are a way to get music sounding as good as it did 20 years ago, there is really no such thing as progress in music technology, Apple has killed any desire for producers to strive for audio quality - there is no point concentrating on the finer points of music production when it's compressed to hell and practically thrown at consumers anyway.
We should have never stopped buying CD's - the 90's was the last great decade for music. Anyone remember when music was a part of their life, not just a random shuffle of a billion half-assed tracks with no character. I will never buy a Pono because it's too expensive, and frankly I still have my CD collection - I'd rather buy a new Hi-Fi - they look like nice devices, but to me they solve a problem that should never exist in the first place. Audiophiles, fans, and musicians need to enforce the quality that was so easily attained decades ago without needing more technology to do it. Or did we lose a war? - the problem is not the format, the problem is in the production.
I'm sick of hearing musicians bitch about the industry they happily helped destroy - I've been a PJ fan since day 1, and I'd give my right testicle to hear the last 3 albums at the same quality as the first 3. The remastering of Ten is a prime example of the state of affairs - the original Ten sounds better and has infinitely more character. Buying Pearl Jams latest album used to be something I look forward to, all the artwork and photography and that fascinating detail - especially with No Code and Vitalogy. Nowadays I just download and don't even feel like I should have to pay for them, I no longer absolutely have to have the new PJ album the second it's available... it makes me depressed and nostalgic and I wish there was a way for me to happily pay money for music worth paying money for.
Old man walks into a electronics store and asks about the music players - the clerk explains that one of these tiny devices can hold their entire music collection.
Man replies, ''No way! - that's amazing! - this little device can store 8 albums?"

I love how Neil plays his own music as a sample for Pono.

Eddie and Uncle Neil are enjoying the pono digital experience. Daniel Lanois could show Eddie all the possibilities for Pearl Jam.

Why in the world would you want to hear a pindrop on the back in a record? If the production and mix are good, I dont want to hear anything else that takes away from the organic character of the record.
One exception for me is All things must pass by George Harrison. The latest mix lets you hear more and I liked it because I just dont like the wall of sound of the original.

Shows what you know. Eddie Vedder is timeless. The fact that you had to edit that comment screams douchbag.
