It impresses me how good of a communicator Adam is and how good he chooses his words. It really shows that he put hard work in his craft and research, that he knows what he is talking about and that learns new knowledge every time he can.

This is my favorite conversation around AI and music out there. Nuanced and thoughtful, thank you gang!

this finally showed up in my recommended! I recently learned the word "Philistine" and to me, that seems like the best word to describe all of the people making these things and also the people using it and thinking that its "art"

Ben could make his own quasi-evangelical soap labels, and have JC distract the cashier while he sticks the new labels onto the soap bottles. As long as you get the scan code right, and get the color and layout close, then it should work. Returning customers probably will just think Dr Bronner is revamping his soap cult philosophy.

An important merch trend might be some form of collectible like literal trading cards, I've already seen that

22:18 In regards to music, this isn't entirely true, but even where it is, it's only been true for a couple of generations. There used to be A LOT more houses with musical instruments. Until a couple of decades after affordable home stereos became a thing. But some of us never stopped.
For pros, you seem to be squeezing out the middle class... So, you get the big money big league musicians, and then the minor leages of musicians just scrambling to get by, many with day jobs. But views and clicks and signature model subsidizations, and all that, are coming from people in the beer leagues, who are making music because it's more fun than TV, or whatever reason - to play around a campfire, or to get laid. So, when you imply that doesn't exist, I'm like hey, wait a sec... maybe YOU don't exist! But not really, because I'm not serious about identifying as part if a group.
I think there's a stereotype that people who make music either are pros or failed pros, who practiced a lot, but couldn't cut it, for whatever reason. Well, there's a ton of us who never practice, but we still make music whenever the opportunity presents. And practice makes perfect, so we're not charging for tickets, but... TONS, I'm telling you. And I mean, even in addition to all the people who make generative bleep bloop as a meditation, or folks copying loops into a DAW in the bedroom. Tons of people play and instrument, and play together, but don't really practice. It's not some all or nothing endeavor.
Therefore (finally get to the point) I think there IS a real parallel with sports. Physical sports have seen a decline in social leagues. Instead of cheap music playback, it was video games that redirected peoples' gaming time and budget. More people are more obese... but there are still tons of people who play sports for fun... and they're going to be much sloppier than the pros, because they hardly practice. But that's okay, they do it for fun - like with the musical connection, the feeling is worth it even if you're not in the upper echelon of people doing it.
If someone who's never made music wants to try, I'd recommend either a guitar that's tuned to an "open tuning", or a keyboard, and at first, treat it as if there are two entirely separate keys - either play only the black ones, or only the white ones. If you do the guitar, strum the strings without pressing anything, then press with your finger across all of the strings just behind the 5th fret up the neck, and then just behind the 7th fret. Then, no matter which instrument you picked, spend the rest of the day trying out different rhythms, and then trying out some different note orders - which notes ypu play when. I guess that sort of thing can be called "practice", but it's not what serious musicians practice. Luckily, I think most people aren't serious about it. And just as luckily, a few people are, and they'll keep amazing me. Many more than a few, but still dwarfed by the number of duffers. Sorry, if that bothers purists, that so many people don't care about avoid notes, or cringe. Eh, you know, deal with it.
Or pick up a stinky hippy handpan, as long as the other people can tune their instruments to you. That's for when you're struggling with rhythm because you're worried too much about hitting the right notes. You can set a MIDI pad controller like that, so that every pad plays a correct note for that key.
I mean, if you want to be in a cover band, then learn songs. My suggestions were for someone who wants to make music but never has... it might seem as if generative AI is the only thing that person could do right now, without lots of practice, that could be musically satisfying in some way. So, I thought of 3 other options that don't involve trivializing the process entirely. I didn't mean to write so much🤣.

Tl;DR - I don't think there's "very much a dividing line" in music. There are plenty of beer leaguer pianists who will never be on the level of Hiromi, for example, but we'll still go down to the bowling alley every week, metaphorically. It doesn't have to sound great. If you're playing with others, sometimes it can seem to sound much better IRT than later on, when you listen to what the recording captured🤣. So, it's okay if the local jam musicians aren't JD and Domi connected... as long as they're not there to get seen, or something along those lines. As far as AI, that doesn't really compete with us. Maybe it'll be useful for some jamming purpose.
