You're doing a great job! Rooting them in a bucket or wet newspaper before planting will greatly speed up their growth. The ones you planted in the big pot is definitely overcrowded. Sugar cane puts out a massive root system and needs a lot of room and water if you want big fat stalks. You probably planted enough cane in that 1 big pot for 4 big pots! A 4-6" piece of cane would need a 5 gallon container minimum, and it will outgrow that after the 1st year.

Thank you for the feed back. That's great information. Have you grow sugarcane before? Did you grow them in a container or in the ground? Ho long does it take from planting to harvest? Thank you

@@GardenloveHomestead Yes, I grew sugarcane for years in the ground, and then transplanted them into containers when I redid my garden space. I've rooted them many times to give away to friends. I eventually got rid of them to make room for other plants. The final plant was a 1ft section I moved from the ground and put into a 25 gal fabric pot. It was very difficult trying to keep it watered enough. I did a very heavy pruning of the roots during the transplant and it still managed to fill half the pot in 1 year.
From planting to harvest, it takes over a year. Depending on variety and local weather. Sugarcane likes hot and humid weather. They will finish between 12-18 months. They'll let you know because the constant green growth at the top will stop and the leaves will start to dry up and go brown. The stalks should be over 5 ft tall by then. They need lots of water, and often! Water them at least twice as much as you would any other plant. 3x isn't out of the norm either. They decline quickly if exposed to drought conditions.
One other reason I got rid of them is because they attract termites (who love to build nests up inside the stalks). Make sure you sprinkle some insecticide granules around the perimeter of your sugar cane beds. Don't plant too close to fruit trees or your house.
They also attract aphids like no other! Those sweet green blades of grass at the top of the canes can get completely covered in aphids and mealybugs if you don't spray often.
