- On August 31, 2014, I took New Jersey Transit out to Princeton Junction for a few hours of railfanning. With the school year rapidly approaching, and with the HHP-8s and AEM-7s not around for much longer, it seemed like an opportune time. The trains were rapid-fire and plentiful!
Train 1: NJT Commuter Train - 8/31/14 11:32 AM
- NJT ALP-46 #4650
- NJT Multilevel Cabcar #7055
Train 2: Amtrak Vermonter #57 - 8/31/14 11:40 AM
- Amtrak AEM-7AC #948
This next train had the first ACS-64 I had ever seen! Notice how I panned the camera not on it, but on the train's Heritage Fleet dining car.
Train 3: Amtrak Long Distance Train - 8/31/14 11:51 AM
- Amtrak ACS-64 #603
Train 4: Amtrak Northeast Regional - 8/31/14 11:56 AM
- Amtrak ACS-64 #601
Next up was the first of several meets I saw, most of which were, unfortunately, blocked by people on the platform for some reason.
Train 5: Amtrak Keystone Service - 8/31/14 12:06 PM
- Amtrak AEM-7AC #935
- Amtrak Metroliner Cabcar #9640
Train 6: NJT Commuter Train - 8/31/14 12:08 PM
- NJT Multilevel Cabcar #7015
- NJT ALP-46 #4628
Train 7: Amtrak Long Distance Train - 8/31/14 12:10 PM
- Amtrak AEM-7AC #942
I did cut out many of the NJT trains I saw, as well as all of the Princeton shuttles I saw, to keep the pace of the video moving.
Train 8: Amtrak Northeast Regional - 8/31/14 12:33 PM
- Amtrak AEM-7AC #927
I was very surprised to see this triplet of work diesels on the NEC!
Train 9: Amtrak Light Power - 8/31/14 12:43 PM
- Amtrak GP15D #572
- Amtrak GP15D #576
- Amtrak GP38H-3 #527
Train 10: Amtrak Acela Express - 8/31/14 12:55 PM
- Amtrak Acela Power Car #2004
- Amtrak Acela Power Car #2018
Train 11: Amtrak Northeast Regional - 8/31/14 12:57 PM
- Amtrak ACS-64 #614
Train 12: Amtrak Northeast Regional - 8/31/14 1:10 PM
- Amtrak ACS-64 #606
Train 13: NJT Commuter Train - 8/31/14 1:13 PM
- NJT ALP-46 #4660
- NJT Multilevel Cabcar #7025
After this was an awesome and perfectly timed three-way meet with a longhood-forward Geep and an interesting deadhead move!
Train 14: NJT Equipment Move - 8/31/14 1:32 PM
- NJT GP40-2 #4300
Train 15: NJT Commuter Train - 8/31/14 1:32 PM
- NJT Multilevel Cabcar #7002
- NJT ALP-46 #4600
Train 16: NJT Commuter Train - 8/31/14 1:33 PM
- NJT ALP-46 #4621
Train 17: Amtrak Keystone Service - 8/31/14 1:50 PM
- Amtrak AEM-7AC #928
Train 18: Amtrak Long Distance Train - 8/31/14 1:59 PM
- Amtrak AEM-7AC #918
Train 19: Amtrak Northeast Regional - 8/31/14 2:02 PM
- Amtrak ACS-64 #615
Train 20: Amtrak Acela Express - 8/31/14 2:10 PM
- Amtrak Acela Power Car #2030
- Amtrak Acela Power Car #2031
Up next was the second unfortunate blocked meet.
Train 21: Amtrak Keystone Service - 8/31/14 2:15 PM
- Amtrak Metroliner Cabcar #9649
- Amtrak AEM-7AC #934
Train 22: Amtrak Northeast Regional - 8/31/14 2:16 PM
- Amtrak AEM-7AC #920
And after a few cut NJTs was the third and last one.
Train 23: Amtrak Northeast Regional - 8/31/14 2:57 PM
- Amtrak AEM-7AC #916
Train 24: Amtrak Northeast Regional - 8/31/14 2:58 PM
- Amtrak ACS-64 #611
After switching sides to catch my inbound train and call it a day, I managed to catch another meet involving an NJT deadhead --- with the same exact Geep I had seen earlier!
Train 25: NJT Commuter Train - 8/31/14 3:02 PM
- NJT Multilevel Cabcar #7045
- NJT ALP-46 #4647
Train 26: NJT Equipment Move - 8/31/14 3:02 PM
- NJT GP40-2 #4300
Train 27: Amtrak Long Distance Train - 8/31/14 3:08 PM
- Amtrak ACS-64 #605
Finally, my train came. But the railfanning would not end there!
Train 28: NJT Commuter Train - 8/31/14 3:13 PM
I managed see an HHP-8 for the last time, stopped at Newark Airport. The 655 would be gone by late October.
Train 29: Amtrak Northeast Regional #194 - 8/31/14 4:09 PM
- Amtrak HHP-8 #655
This was a great trip. I got a huge amount of trains, and in addition to other nice catches I saw many AEM-7s and even an HHP-8! I will have to go back to Princeton Junction soon, before the last of the AEM-7s are gone. - Авто та транспорт
those old AEM-7 "toasters" will always have a favorite place in my heart
R.I.P. Amtrak AEM-7
Uou probably remember the E60s, too? NJT had a few holdovers...
Love the noise the rails make as the train approaches
I love how AEM-7 928 has the old numbersign font and on the other side is the newer font
use to go train watching at Princeton the Sunday after thanksgiving with my father. moved to Oklahoma.miss going train watching with my father
8:03 what the hell! That is rare!
Also the HHP-8's are by far my favorite regional train locomotive. I only saw one once.
They became an endangered species very quickly. Before the ACS-64s were coming, I used to think of them as getting in the way of seeing AEM-7s, haha. But they turned out to be the first to go.
+Amtrak706 boy I would give to spend the day at that station just waiting for a train to speed by. How long did it take to make this video?
+JoeyLovesTrains (NorthShoreLine) It probably took about 5 hours of editing.
I will never forget you, Electric Toaster.
Nice video;excellent panning and zoom work! One of the best PJ videos I've seen!
Thank you!
I remember a time when this train station was so tiny, the trains had to make more then one stop to let all the people out. Only 2 cars at a time could fit on the platform. Then the train would move up, let the next 2 cars unload & so on until everyone got off. This was back in the 70's.
8:04 Where are those Arrow III Going?
In reference to your question, I read that the Arrow III's or some of them may be given an overhaul.
8:45 ALL ABOARD! LOLOLOLOL I S*** MY PANTS LAUGHING.
BNSF 8010 LAMO XD
BNSF 8010 lol funny noise
Let us have a moment of silence for all the ALP 44s, HHP8s, Arrow IIIs, and all Comet cars pre V versions that will be soon laid to rest...
Connor Callahan When are the Comets and Arrows going?
Amtrak706
Well the Arrow IIs that started service in 1974 were all decommissioned in 97 so best guess is that the Arrow IIIs which started in 77 will be retired soon (within the next 5 years from now). The Comet IV series will still be around for a while (At least 5-10 years before the number of them dwindle(I think that the old NJT comet livery was the best)) but Comet III will be going out within the next 5 or so years. Numbers of all those railcars are dwindling as the delivery rate of the newer version increase and as the bi level cars are becoming more popular. By the way great video! Subbed.
Also the AEM-7s I miss those things.
@@connorcallahan1915 It was quite interesting to see the predictions of a rail fanner from 6 years ago. Arrow 3s are still going strong. Comet 4s are still going strong, comet 3s are retired and comet 2s are still doing fine too. Most trains are also still not bi level
i love the trains :D
8:45 your friend yelled "all aboard" at the right moment. Screamed it like any foamer would.
That was the conductor.
100th Sub! Great videos btw!
AcelaBoy2151 Thanks! I'm happy to finally have 100 subscribers.
Amtrak706 Anytime. Keep up the good work!
Toasters!!!! Nice video Ben!
Thanks
Amazing 👌
loooool how the hell did I miss that dip in the catenary height for all these years =P
fan railer is you? O_O
@@cataleyasestakova7704 yes he is
most awesome vid
Most Awesome Vid!!!!!!!!!!!!
ginantsfan5 Thanks!
Nice catches, dude. Why the heck did you not upload for 2 years?
lmao those NJT ALP-46 looks like some kind of DB train
BistroOfDoom Well they basically are. The ALP-46 is based on the German DB Class 101.
@@amtrak706 oh ok. thanks for the info.
How fast were the am trak were and the high speed ones
Track speed through Princeton Junction is 135mph for Acela, 125mph for Amfleet and Viewliner II, and 110mph for Heritage and Viewliner I.
Interesting that the pantograph was not raised on 2018 when that Acela went by.
Adam Newton Yeah that is interesting. I hadn't noticed that!
Excellent. Anything from Metropark?? Live in the UK, but have family in NJ and used to use Metropark. Hoping to do a model railroad based on US lines.
Lachie Tod Thanks! And I haven't railfanned there, but I've been through it on the train many times. Track speed is a bit lower there, 90mph I think.
OK, good to know. Funny how in the US it's called 'rail fanning' and over here 'train spotting'. Lol.
Keep up the good work, really interesting. Thanks
how come the NJ transit at 2:50 passed the station
BNSFrailfan 9371 Either an express train or a deadhead.
Is there an under pase to get to the other said
MARC still runs its last remaining HHP-8"s
NJT the ALP44s are gone, too.
Never see them on these videos. AEM-7s were nicknamed "meatballs."
cool one
Nice
amtrak should use there superliners on the nec
***** Superliners are too tall for many of the tunnels on the NEC, namely the tunnels into New York Penn Station. That's why Amtrak uses single level stuff and NJT uses single level and special clearance multilevel cars. Also the Superliners are limited to 100 MPH.
Jmream2 Jmream There’s a video floating around UA-cam of a superliner equipment move through the NEC. Couldn’t find it now though.
is that newjersy ?!!!!!
SirPrice yes
What is going on with the train at 7:20?
They are lining up with the narrow temporary platform extensions as seen at the end of the video.
Soon, PRR/CN/Strasburg Railroad #1223, 7002, & 89 will reach 150mph in Princeton junction in New Jersey and their restoration will be completed in 2019 and 1223 will have a new top speed up to 140mph and it will have a lighter boiler and 7002's is 145mph and 89's is 150mph and they will all have the lighter boilers at the biggest British steam engines and they will reach 150mph every field day when I'm in turn of river middle school, and they will travel from strasburg to new haven, CT
i love newjersy so is my mom
I'd hate to say it,but I will curse Amtrak for the rest of my life for getting rid of their AEM-7ACs.
Dude!! Right????? Now down in Cali, they're soon getting rid of the surfliner locamotives, those are fantastic, and should be left alone
