    I just wanted to say that this is probably my favorite jump tutorial ever. It is a little long winded, and the calculations are kind of hard to follow, but when you start to just explain how it feels to you that really unlocked something in my mind. My jump shots got so much more consistent after watching this! Thank you! You're my favorite billiards channel by far!

    It took me less than a day to learn how to jump from looking at videos and ive never damaged a table. I think some pool halls are worried about the hard hitting pool players damaging equipment. If you are a good player and know how to hit with speed and not hit hard you shouldn't damage anything well jumping.

    • @stevenclark5173
      @stevenclark5173 5 місяців тому

      This makes no sense. Hard is speed and vice versa. Kinetic energy is simply mass times acceleration so how hard you are hitting is entirely dependent on speed since the mass is constant if you hold the cue correctly. The pool halls are worried about miscues causing damage to the sticks or table. The probability of a miscue is much higher with an elevated cue.

    This was a really good tutorial. I always thought you have to hit the center of the cue ball(center when looking at the cue ball horizontally) so I would try to hit the center even when elevated which now I found out will give unwanted backspin to the cue ball and make the shot difficult. After this, I tried to aim through the center of the cue ball and was making jump shots after 3-4 tries.

  • @Trinitronlicker
    @Trinitronlicker 5 місяців тому

    Good tutorial. The extra distance from the jump cue is mostly because of the additional stiffness so less energy is lost from the cue bending and oscillating. You can see the blur from the cue moving in your slow mo shots, that’s where the energy is going, along with some to compressing the cue and tip. This is assuming cue mass is the same; more mass will obviously let you transfer more energy from the inertia.

      World of Pool and Billiards Well it probably would damage “FELT” but only if done wrong, to hard or to less of an angle into the “felt”. Now If your playing on a home table or a tournaments table then more than likely you will be playing on a “CLOTH” table. Cloth is another level and the only thing any player worth his salt should be playing on and on cloth I would agree with ya, it would be very rare to see someone damage it by just learning to jump or masse. My local pool hall gives a 4x4" patch of felt along with the balls when you rent a table. Is that so you can protect the table cloth when you practice jump shots? I've never done jump shots and I want to practice but I'm afraid to practice on equipment that is not my own. Does giving players patches of fabric mean they are telling people it's ok to practice jump shots on their tables?

    • @WorldofPoolandBilliards
      @WorldofPoolandBilliards  2 роки тому

      I would simply ask one of the employees. Generally it isn't recommended to practice them unless you ask for permission. In the middle of a game however if the shot comes up and there are no signs saying no jump shots it is generally accepted that you are allowed to shoot that shot without asking for permission. If they hand you a 4x4 patch of felt it may be for jump shots, but it is more likely to protect the table when you are breaking. I would just ask for permission before practicing them.

    • @WorldofPoolandBilliards
      @WorldofPoolandBilliards  2 роки тому +1

      What I mean by the center of the cue ball is center from the angle of the cue , not center as viewed from plane of the table, but from the angle of the cue into the cue ball.

    • @myblacklab7
      @myblacklab7 2 роки тому

      @@WorldofPoolandBilliards Interesting.
      Going frame by frame at around 0:51 I see that you initially hit the ball slightly above center at an angle that would bring the cue nowhere near the center of the ball, but on your follow through this changes.
      Forgive me if I'm being dense, but do you mean to say:
      1) You're aiming at the center of where the ball touches the table, or
      2) You're aiming for your stroke to stop its downward motion when it reaches the "middle," meaning the center of the line that would go straight down through the cue ball, but not actually the center of the cue ball, or
      3) None of the above (LOL).
      I had a similar issue with people who say "swing down at the ball" to hit home runs. I'd swing down and smack the ball into the ground every time until I realized that they meant something different than literally "swing down at the ball."

    • @myblacklab7

      It depends on how stiff the shaft is and how hard the tip is. The harder and stiffer the better. Its possible to jump half a ball with most shafts, but there isn't much you can do with that cue to get better results than that. With a standard cue, you have to hit a lot harder and require a lot more room between the cue ball and ball you are jumping over.
      If you have a break cue, you might get better results using it to jump until you feel ready to go out and purchase a designated jump cue.

    that was good and i appreciate the tutorial. i'm decent at jumping, maybe 90% hit the object ball clean and 50% make a relatively easy shot.
    one thing....given that you were willing to do a deep dive into geometry, why didn't you make that one last, and probably easiest and most useful, calculation and instead of instructing to calculate the angle from top to bottom, convert that to inches, or balls? i'm not going to calculate the angle every time i'm 10 inches from the ball in my way, but i certainly would benefit from a chart of angles based on say, 6 inches, 8, 10 12 14 inches and so on. that's much more likely to be used by your audience. actually, i think i'll make that chart.
    again, nice job. impressive.

I've tried holding the cir and hitting the cue ball at the same angle etc but I just put insane backspin on the cue half the time. And when I lift the angle higher I just fire the ball across the table. Soo frustrating

    I really like your videos, but the physics lesson was serious overkill and totally unnecessary. All people need to know is where to hit the ball and and what angle, and how the angle affects how far and high the ball will go. It’s a matter of feel and muscle memory after that. There’s no way someone attempting a jump shot will be trying to estimate the speed of the ball and what that means for the path of the cue ball.
    With all that said, I love your shot recreations. Always good stuff!

    This is what I hate about watching pool jump tutorials; almost every tutorial video contradicts the other. One will say hold the cue firmly, the next will tell you to use the lightest grip you can. Another will say follow through the cue ball, and the next will say a quick poke with very little if any at all follow through. Who's right? Maybe they all are?!

      I think people recommend whatever tricks helped them overcome problems in their stroke. For example if someone is struggling to draw the cue ball, it often is because someone tightens up their back hand and that lifts the tip upwards a little bit, causing you to not hit low enough. So a loose grip solves that problem. But it's possible also to draw with a tight grip, and maybe for one guy, tightening it up solved some other problem he was having. So you'd get different advice from those players.
      At the end of the day you just need to elevate enough to clear the ball, hit hard enough, and not let it get trapped or miscue.

    Why is it illegal to scoop jump a ball? For one, it’s way easier then coming straight down, two, it is way less risk of damaging the felt then coming straight down on to the table. I feel like some jag off created the rule because his buddy was better than him at it, so he had to invent a rule to make it more difficult. I don’t even play pool, but when I notice dumb things in life, I often wonder why.
    If you have good hand/eye coordination and good judgment you can scoop jump the que ball with great accuracy, you can get a good angle/height, and save the felt all at the same time.

    • @WorldofPoolandBilliards
      @WorldofPoolandBilliards  2 роки тому +1

      In my opinion it is because you are only allowed to contact the cue ball with the tip of your cue, and you are only allowed to contact the cue ball once. When you scoop, the cue ball kind of rides up the shaft for a second and is then launched. This means you are either pushing the cue ball or touching it twice, both of which are fouls even on regular shots.

    • @garydelong7750
      @garydelong7750 2 роки тому

      @@WorldofPoolandBilliards thanks for the explanation, I always wanted to know why, and that makes sense. Although, I would argue the side of the que tip is still technically the que tip (they screw on right?) and as far as a double tap, or ride up the shaft, in my opinion, that would only happen to someone who didn’t execute it properly. I still think it’s a lame rule, but I really do appreciate the insight. I probably would have never known otherwise. Thanks
