as a "sexy latina" one of the shittiest things about this stereotype is how it creates an excuse for sexual harrassment and sexual assault. it also reduces our emotions: it's like when we're mad about something our points aren't fully conveyed bc people won't take them seriously. one is usually called "sassy" and that's about it, we're not really heard.
I hear you. If it makes you feel any better that's applied to all women. Anger is only an acceptable emotion in men. For the women it's so often: I bet she's on her period / just needs an actual man to f** her right. It's an idiotic stereotype. The only "good" thing about the spicy Latin stereotype is that it's accepted to display anger. Yes, it's not going to be taken seriously. In black women for example the mere display of anger often gets viciously ridiculed and punished. That also applies to all women but due to the Jezebel stereotype people get irritated with black and women super quick. Of course this way neither Latin nor black women can learn to express our deal with anger in a healthy. It sucks.
100000000000000 kabillion percent. My other Latina best friend and I, were are constantly sexually harassed. We're both Caucasian Latinas, her having SOME mestizo in her lineage, but as stand alone people we constantly get mistaken for Italian or French or Jewish or possibly Greek. But when she and I are together but alone, the sexual harassment was always constant. Dangerous and aggressive. And she'd ask me, "Nati but WHY ALWAYS US? I have tons of gorgeous friends and it's never as bad when I'm with them!" And I explained, "it isn't about HOW HOT we are. It's about HOW we are HOT. Gorgeous lovdlt short gamine small breasted bright eyed little pal? What a cute girlfriend she looks like she's make. 5'10, blond blue eyed dramatic body type other gorgeous friend? Wow what a stunners a model. But 2 super curvy waspt waisted huge boobied and butted Raven haired loud mouths who like to dress up an dance? The culture has instructed men to consider that an open invitation to sex. It's also bc FOR REAL FOR REAL? Our body type are NEVER seen anywhere other than porn or rap videos. Ever. Actresses, Models and musicians are TINY. Body positivity movements have finally made bigger plus sized girls' beauty more mainstream.... But where do you ACTUALLY see the women 5'2-5'7, sizes 4-8, lets say. Where? Literally only porn.
I think that can also be something that can oftentimes extended to women in general when we're mad, because a lot of ignorant people love to dismiss an angry woman as simply being hormonal.
I'm so sorry to hear that, that must be the worst feeling. Not to downplay your experience but a lot of women of other races can experience this as well when voicing complaints. Black women immediately receive the "loud angry black woman" label. Girly-girls who aren't imposing or intimidating are considered "whiny and annoying" or "weak." Hot white girls are brushed off as "crazy." If you don't deliberately put in effort to come across as calm and rational, society will always want to dismiss you as a joke. It's not cool when it happens to anybody and I'm so sorry you have to experience that.
What’s also frustrating is how often people assume Latin = Mexican. Just like Asian = Chinese/Japanese. Or how people refer to Africa as if it’s a country and not a continent. Intersectionality exists and one person of color will not have the same exact experience as another, even in the same race/ethnicity, due to other factors, like age, gender, religion, etc. The world is full of diverse languages, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds, and people should not be reduced and pigeonholed into one single identity and experience.
It's because the United States trains its citizens to only think in black and white - both figuratively and literally. Ethnicity is so much more important than race, because that's where your culture comes from, and with the age of the Internet, lots of racially and socioeconomically diverse people are coming together to share ethnicity. It's really beautiful; and sad that bigots are too proud to be a part of it.
Mexico use to be the film capitol for Latin America, even Spaniards traveled to Mexico to be famous like Rocío Durcál. Mexico is influential to Latin America for better or worse.
And not all Latinos are even PoC - there’s tons of white Latinos, exactly those who’re in spotlight in Latin American novelas and movies and when come to the U.S are often counted are “diverse”. Example: Henry Zaga, a white Brazilian, who was cast as Sunspot on the New Mutants movie, a character who was originally black Brazilian (therefore, whitewashing amongst Latinos). Besides most of Latin American elites are still very white. Therefore I mean: there must be more diversity of Latinos in general, including regarding race/ethnicity since, contrary to the gringo stereotype, it can’t be itself considered “a race”, but a very broad cultural identity.
"It is all about containing her. She is to be tamed by an alpha white man." This gave me chills. Most of the times that movies portray strong women, they end up showing exactly this. Boys end up thinking they want a strong girl, but they truly fantasize about breaking her.
Yes, I call this the taming of the Shrew. A strong, powerful woman who goes against the expectations of society is "tamed" by our boring male lead to fall into the expectations she once rebelled against. It often comes from the fact that men have been routinely taught to go after women who don't accept their advances. Thus, if she does not fall into gender based expectations, she's just playing hard to get. However, the same men who go after such women have no interest in her actual ideas, they still want her to fall into her gender expectations
You also need to dig into why Latinas in the media are almost always portrayed looking like Jennifer Lopez or Sofia Vergara--even though Latinas come in shades that range from J-Lo's color to Lupita Nyong'o's, and with hair textures that range from straight to afro.
So true I was born in Colombia and a lot of americans don't understand that Im black and latino and look nothing like Sofia Vergara JLO Shakira or Eva Longoria.
I'm Puerto Rican. I was walking in Seoul, Korea one day in 2010 and some random Korean guy yelled at me in English, "You look like spicy girl ;D" I remember thinking at the time, "What, like food?"
Sofía Vergara's career has been framed by this Trope: she had to dye her hair brunette (she's blonde) because in casting they were looking for a "real latina", and she uses a stronger accent for her parts.
@S Meza I now, watching some of her interviews that's the only way she could get a role, as the sexy latina with darker skin, strong accent and dark hair. That's the way it is, no shame for that.
@S Meza the problem with using hate is that the person, Luis, takes away the humanity and individuality of Sofia and her decisions with out framing the person. Ironically this is what using stereotypes is doing so blaming the person rather than the reasons as to why they had to use the stereotypes to succeed.

As a latina I hate this stereotype sm. There are latinas with every type of personality. Being latina doesnt mean you are loud, horny all the time, rude, crazy etc
I am latina and I am horny all the time. I was not aware that was a bad thing. And yes, my laugh is usually the loudest in any room, somehow 🤔 I attract all kind of people from all backgrounds, cultures, education. Sexual orientation, etc. I never felt different to anyone.
@@melsis2785 It's not a bad thing, and itf that's you there's nothing wrong with it. The problem is when people assume all latinas are like this and treat them as such.
@@fernandaespinola8183 I have no idea where you live, but I have never been faced with "when people assume" kind of mentality. maybe its because of what I have stablish in previous post. I DO NOT ATRACT IGNORANT people. Maybe you should revisit who you represent, as for me, I am very happy being Latina!!!! whatever that means to all of us! who do you attract?
As a man who dates exclusively fiery Latinas & loves it... Hey if that's not you, cool. But no need to get mad at Hollywood for showing that personality type more often. That's because it's interesting. You don't suppose we figure that "all men" are action heroes? Anywho, is not like they're just making it up. These personality types DO exist, & in powerful numbers.
I agree, I adore that they actually take the viewer's suggestions into account when making their videos, which is more reason to adore this channel! 🥰💖
They totally do! Stick any suggestions under their own comment in the comment stream and they totally look at it. I've seen them action 5. They also totally improve the suggestion. Make it more tactful. More respectful.
This is why having charachters like flora winx club are so important, having a cottage core sweet feminine latina/afro latina charachter that wasnt aggressive
Not really ....many of these latinas are white women themselves. Sofia Vergara for example is fully European on both sides of her family. Just two white cultures mixing. Yes "Latino" culture is largely white with many other distinct practices but it is largely based on "Latin culture". Which is found in southern Europe.
@@jamiemohan2049 we are talking about culture here, for the most part there is absolutely no difference in the culture of white latinos and other latinos, unless they are of recent immigrant stock. And even then, latin america unlike north america is very homogeneous in terms of culture, it is very conservative and they are not very politically correct, they will pressure you into following their culture and most descendants of immigrants will. For this reason a lot of their immigrants are people from other catholic and Latin speaking nations. So yeah, if you meet a black and a white latino from the same country. Latin america did not go through segregation, and because of this you have people of all races that have had to interact mix and share with eachother for generations. So it is nowhere near as divided, or tribalistic as it is in the US where each race developed in completely different circumstances
@@TuAmigoElMorrocoy I wouldn't consider Latin America to be homogenous, many people are mixed with native indigenous south Americans and whites. Many others are also mixed with Africans. Large populations are also fully white and native in some parts with no admixture. So I'd say south America is very diverse lol. Just that a good few of the women in the video were white, others in the video were not white.
I also feel like they are only interested in the tropical Latina type. They do not know Chilean, Argentine, Peruvian or Bolivian women (and so many more).
Finally! Also in those countries theres a lot of mixed ethnicities because of immigration waves, so a lot of Argentineans, chilenas, etc. look European
Exactly! There are some Chilean and Argentine latinas/latinos that live in the actual snow and mountains (beautiful places like Patagonia, Los Andes in the south of Chile and Argentina) but Americans are not ready to talk about it...
Something curious I noticed about the Latina trope when I was little: only the lighter skinned ones are used for the stereotype. Not the darker-skinned ones or those with African descent. Edit: I'm Latin American and lived in Latin America for some time which is why I'm quite aware of this.
V Nha The interesting thing is all the white people you see in telenovelas aren't even Latino they are usually Spanish or French but they will move to Mexico to get those roles, you can also notice a bunch of white washing in Bollywood films it's sad how common this is
I’m a big telenovelas fan, and as a black latina I have never watched one with someone like me. When I was little I thought there weren’t darker people in Mexico...
@V Nha Mexicans with considerable or even noticeable African descent are very rare. When a Mexican person has dark skin it usually means that they have a lot of Native ancestry, not African. source: im mexican
As a white Latina, I feel like men only treat me normally when they don't know what I am. When I tell them I'm Puerto Rican, that's when they start to fetishize me. It's weird as hell!
Same girl, sometimes I even hide that I'm Brazilian because when they know that the think I'm a slut or a whore that they can easily have sex with me. By the way I'm not exaggerating one time a guy though that I was a prostitute just because I was Brazilian 🙄🤬
Thanks for sharing that! I'm half Colombian, and my last name is Welsh so I don't think that it's always immediately apparent that I'm half Hispanic/Colombian. I'm pretty sure my last ex-boyfriend fetishized me, and it was a really awful experience. Of course there was no way of hiding my ethnicity, because a boyfriend has to sooner, or later meet the parents. I think what really creeped me out was the fact that most of his exes were half Latina, and half Anglo-American. The worst part of the whole experience of was the fact that he turned out to be a narcissistic abuser.
Same!!!!! The moment One of my ex boyfriend’s ( who was white) found out I was half Mex he said he thought it was sexy how he has a “exotic” girlfriend, but still white enough to not upset his racist ass family 😶 I left right after that comment.
Yes please! Just in general, Slavic women too - either shown as servants (e.g. Dorota in Gossip Girl (...just so many stereotypes in that character alone)), armcandy airheads (e.g. flatmates/models in New Girl), oversexualized criminals (e.g. Katinka in Zoolander), brutally/aggressively sexual (Xenia in GoldenEye, and that Polish girl in E1S1 Skins). Some of those are almost parodic examples, but that's where the stereotypes can be seen in extreme. Not a good look tbh.
Yes, Almost every men that I came across said to me that they have fantasies with slavian women, that's why there are so much human smuggling around there.
Crazy thing: I'm black and I don't speak spanish, but I'm still latina. I am brazilian and I really hate this stereotype. Latina women are just women, normal people.
Nope. I'm a Latin man, and I by no means think German, American or English women are remotely as sassy, passionate, femminine, and sexy as Latin women. There is no point in denying a clear behavioral average. Not everybody is the same, but there is a clear difference
honestly i hate the spicy latina trope as a latina because i'm neither sexy nor "feisty", which already deems me unattractive to society's standards whoever made this mf trope is catching these hands
Agree 100% I always say this cause people seem disappointed when they know I'm from Latin America or even here in Latin America I'm insipid just because I don't fit in this fucking stereotype as if being Latina means just a couple of things
Honestly “feisty” is such a shitty word. What comes to mind when you think of the word “feisty”? Someone or something who’s only PLAYING at being tough and strong. A barking Chihuahua, a little girl with a bad mouth and it’s certainly not a word most people associate with strong men
According to Hollywood, there's only four types of roles for Latin American actors: Spicy Latinas, Maids, Violent Thugs or conversing solely in Spanish! 🙄
Always remember, latino is not a race A blonde woman from Argentina is latina A black man from Haiti is latino A ginger girl from Brazil is latino An indigenous woman from México is latina A brunette boy from Quebec (yes Quebec) is also latino IT IS NOT A RACE
No estaría muy segura con el último ejemplo, pero todo sería más fácil si todo el continente pudiera referirse a si mismo como americanos, ya sabes, como el nombre del continente.
@@rubyrose6460 Latin america can also be taken in a very literal sense: people born in america with latin roots. Note here that latin can mean spanish but also portuguese (brazilians) and french (quebecois) since they are also languages rooted in latin. People from the rest of Canada and US are anglo saxon, thus not latin americans. It would indeed be easier to all be called American, as these labels really don't take in account the very wide cultural differences between the communities themselves.
@@BehBehniche Si, eso está muy claro, un brasileño es latino más puede no ser hispanohablante; aún así, referirse a alguien como "latino" es muy genérico, por eso en Latinoamérica solo somos específicos en el país de origen y ya.

I have been reading comics at webtoon, the female asian characters are always weak and submissive with low self esteem but latinas are portrayed as strong and independent women. I think asian women should be seen in the same way. All asian women that I have met are strong, funny and adventurous.

Let's also talk about the amount of white men who come to Latin American countries and think they're entitled to grab and harrass latinas because of the stereotypes they've been fed by media about us being oh-so-sexual. Also, not directly related, but it'd be nice if Hollywood realized that latinx does not equal Spanish speaking. Us Brazilians exist (millions of us!) and are as much part of Latin America as our Spanish speaking neighbours.
It's because there is so much confusion between the terms Hispanic and Latino. There is still a lot of people who think they mean the same thing but one has to do with the Spanish language and Spaniard ancestry (Hispanic) and the other is geographic location (Latin America- latino).
@@damndanim I’m Guyanese but even though we’re South American we don’t really classify ourselves as Latin American. A big part of it is us speaking English (or Dutch for Suris, French in French Guiana) and identify more with West Indian/Caribbean culture than Latin American culture.
This trope is so dangerous because when Latinas visit foreign countries we often face that stereotype and are expected to be like that: jolly, sexual and loud
@@Alias_Anybody No, being Latina I always believed that Americans were the noisy ones (so dramatic in the movies). Obviously when I grow up I realized that these are just silly stereotypes.

Im brazilian and I grew up and live in brazil, ive never been through your experience and im sorry for all of that shit. This stereotype and sexualization of us latinas has to stop💔
Are you going to tell me the scots were on average as energetic, passionate as the Brazilian men?. It goes both ways. Stereotypes are just average behavioral averages, not everybody is the same, but there is a clear archetype
I loved that movie growing up (Fools Rush In), and always genuinely saw it as a movie about accepting and embracing different cultures. The greatest love of my life is a Latina/Black woman and being a part of her family taught me so much about embracing and understanding the differences in familial culture that exist in the world. To be fair, I'm not a boring white guy, more a gender fluid boi!!! HAHA.
To be fair, I personally know lots of Latin women (including my mother) who end up with a boring white guy (my step-dad) because they've been burned by the passionate, short-tempered, unfaithful and economically unreliable Latin men (my father, uncles and most of my male cousins). So this stereotype comes from a place of truth. But I also yearn for the emotionally stable, level headed, and sometimes even neurotic Latin characters (I refuse to use the term "latinx," created by gringos).
Let me get this straight: You comment something that is unrelated to the fact that I have two DANGEROUSLY DASHING girlfriends? Considering that I am the unprettiest UA-camr ever, having two hot girlfriends is really incredible. Yet you did not mention that at all. I am quite disappointed, dear maria
It's so interesting for me how in most portrayals of latin women they are shown as very sexual beings, while in our countries, mostly Catholic and very conservative it is almost the contrary, in wich sexuality is taboo, and a lot of families ar really really traditional, basically almost the opposite of the portraits. For us (talking from stereotypes ) people in united states are more open, because our main reference are spring breakers.
Totally agree i believe latinas we grow up in a kind of irony when from media we are expected to be seen as sexy voluptuous women. But at home and in our latinos households we must be a virginal, humble women.
@@ChantelCarter-cc7cu Of course, I hadn't heard of the last two you mentioned, but yes Gina Torres and Christina Milian. People also forget that there are blonde, blue-eyes Latinas and Black Latinas. Latino is not a race. Being Brazilian, I laugh everytime an American says something like "White people can't dance" or "You don't talk like you're Black". Like, really? Maybe White AMERICANS can't dance and maybe I don't speak like a Black AMERICAN lol. Even the minorities are exceptionalist in America.
Yep. being from Argentina and seeing so many white people who are still Argentinian, a lot of Americans wouldn't understand. Latin America is just a all-continents foreigners who had children with native people and with other foreigners, and Hollywood only cares for those who have white features and darker skin.
In Argentina a lot of people are descendants from Europeans meaning a lot of them are white and we have a strong european influence in our culture. But we're still Latin American.
Yeah, that always shocks me and annoys me from USA. All this whit people do this, or black people do that, or you act like white... What is that? I never talk like that. I don't understand how having a specific tone of skin can affect the way you talk, act, dance, whatever. Your culture, your upbringing, your personality, those things can affect you.
We need to talk more about Afro Latinas. There is this perception that Latinas look a certain way, but what many don't realize is that we come in different shades and races. Latin and American media are to blame for all the stereotypes.

I will say, in regards to Latinas being susceptible to poor body image, a good deal of that pressure comes from Latin culture in general. My family will constantly talk about weight, and have very sneaky ways of covertly calling you fat. It’s weird too because it usually coincides with a strong emphasis being put on food and eating. It’s... a complicated dynamic.

This is the issue with all tropes and stereotypes, they're so limiting and annoying. I’m Latina and I get so mad when I see this stereotype on movies and shows. And how they sexualize every Latino character. Latinos are so different, we can be shy and we don’t have that shitty accent.
Add the fact that non-latinos want to date latinas 'cause "they will treat them like kings, will cook for them" and stuff. No, we're still fighting everyday in our own families and countries to be respected and be seen beyond housewives, we're not only looking for a man to serve.
Yes as Latina. I’m sick of this. My personality is very much passionate, mischievous, hot tempered, etc. But I’m tired of those traits being the default for all Latina women. It’s fetishization of our race as some sexual objects. Men too. It’s sick and we’re past this.
But there is some truth to this....I see that in school the latinas are always the least interested in studies....and more interested in getting a boyfriend

And another problem is that this stereotype becomes internalized by latinas, usually on social media. Lelo pons literally grew on popularity because of perpetuating this "toxica" stereotype and then other latina influencers followed.
And Lele doesn't even speak Spanish correctly all the way. She has done interviews in Spanish and she sounded worse than a one year old. Lele was never funny and all she did was stereotype Latinas. We don't claim her in the Latin community.

Omg when I say I'm from Colombia people say I don't speak "colombian" because I'm from the coast and we talk differently than people from telenovelas and movies
I´m brazilian, sometimes I just don´t understand Sofia, I love Modern Family and I really like her she is a really funny comedian but some jokes about Gloria and latinos in general bother me( mostly in the first season) like when they are seen as criminals or theives, I think if was a brazilian character I woud be offended, I don´t know so much about Colombia or how colombians see that but Sofia seems ok with these jokes and I think I can´t judge her for it.
There's also lots of discourse within the Latino community about colorism in who is accepted & celebrated in the media. So many Latina stars are white-passing or lighter-skinned, as opposed to being indigenous or afro-latina. In a way this underscores the racism present in Latin America. Although, in the US, we sort of view Latinos as a monolithic group, just as in America, there was slavery and colonialism so that those descended from Europeans are typically the most well-off and the most accepted.
I agree and so many aren't white-passing (as in mixed that looks white), but just white Latinas (as in just or overall of European descent, just like a white gringo), like Lele Pons or Ricky Martin or Lauren Jauregui or Gisele B. I think is rather problematic the way the U.S generalize us all as POC because, like you said, racism is pretty much real in Latin American countries as well and each country has its particularities. And in the U.S Latine community a lot of times we don't talk about how racism is an issue, not just colorism - since thinking of Latinos as a race is problematic because it erases this diversity and all the racial injustice that happens in Latin American countries too (especially to indigenous and black populations).
@@mauriciomontiel280 Lol this. People forget that Latin American people can be of any race, including of course white. There are plenty of European descendants in Latin America who obviously are white and yet for some reason Americans don't consider them white just because they speak Spanish of Portuguese.
I also dislike when people assume that speaking Spanish is sexy before they even hear you speak. Like, have you heard my Argentine high school's Math teacher speaking spanish? Mmm clearly no, cause that wasn't sexy at all.
@Carlo Santana no languages don’t come from one fixated and specific origin. Origin of languages lie in years of change, mixture of cultures and people and new dialects being born. All Romance languages are is languages that can trace their roots to a common language and that is the Latin Germanic language.
As awful as the tropes are, it isn't like they have been given many options when it comes to characters, they are the symptom of the problem, not the problem itself
This always makes me roll my eyes. This archetype is always in the "not a girl, not yet a woman" age range: young enough to be believably earnest and "worthy" of help but old enough for the male protagonist's implicit romantic attraction to her to not be creepy. She's usually sympathetic and mature/bright for her age (hence her emotional connection with the protagonist) with wide round eyes so that white people can feel comfortable watching her. I can't even think of any examples off the top of my head; I just know I've seen them too often. Hell, I've been that girl on occasion. TL;DR I feel you.
I’m surprised you didn’t include Salma Hayek’s “Frida”, since that was a passion project of her’s and at least partially intended to broaden the way Latinos were portrayed on screen. While it does endorse the spicy Latina trope to a degree, it shows that Frida Kahlo had real reasons to be fiery and assertive, and basically tells the artist’s story from her own perspective.
Frida is one of my favorite movies. I usually watch it just after Halloween, around Dia de Los Muertos, though I haven't watched it yet this year (2020). Mentally I compare Salma Hayek's Frida Kahlo to Winona Ryder's Jo March: feisty artistic women.
No this goes against the narrative they are trying to tell. They want Latina's to be portrayed as white women. Basically folks want to get rid of all stereotypes despite some having merit and truth and want everyone to talk and act like California white people. ...so if Frieda is remade expect her to sound and act like she is white.
This is part of why I loved Roma. All of the Latina women that are casted are usually fair skinned, curvy, etc. My skin ranges during the year but I’m obviously not white. My features are more indigenous and I don’t consider myself to be really all that curvy. Yalitza was the first time that I saw someone who was closer to me and she wasn’t sexualized in Roma. She was who she was, vulnerable, strong, beautiful in her own way, things I wish I saw more of.
That's a very good take. I'm from South America and the trope in local soap operas of the spicy latina is that of an unobtainable woman of fantasy. The local "Vedette" are more close to that... In fact, our Vedettes ARE our manic pixie dream girls!!
I would honestly love it if you go over Adam Sandler movies. They’re so so so so so so sexist. Some people may say “Oh but they’re just jokes. It’s comedy.” And stuff like that, but those types of movies normalize this kind of behavior. Plus he always has these gorgeous women as love interests and he is mediocre looking at most. I have never met anyone who has a celebrity crush on Adam Sandler. I really don’t want come across as mean or hypocritical, but I just really don’t like his movies. (I would say hate but I don’t like that word)
No that much. There's an episode where they portraited Brazilian as Very beautiful, sexy, gourgeus and perfumed criminals. It was so disappointing for me as Brazilian because I love the show. And Diaz is portrayed almost as an angry Latina woman. Not that revolutionary
Agreed. But the Eastern Europeans are portrayed as cold and conniving, more cerebral. Whereas the latinas are so emotional and impulsive they can’t control themselves
The "chill" personality thing (minus the evil part) is kind of realistic, at least for Russians and Ukrainians. But that goes both ways, from their perspective US-Americans are hyperactive stepford-smilers.
this is interesting, the video shows a hollywood view but usually in México the protagonist is a white skin, virgin inocent, girl, and the villian is a sexy woman or an evil creepy guy , but the lack of diversity in skin shades and body types remains on tv and films
Beatriz, the dark skinned is usually the villain in telenovas. Interesting how LatinX elevate fair skinned gringos, i have also seen Afro latinas being portrayed as villainous maids on TV . The story of the blonde and blue eyed beggar in Mexico comes to mind. this was from a few years back.
@@PHlophe i cant remember dark skinned villians in telenovelas in mexico, i only remember the dark skinned ones have the role of maids or serving people
I don't even speak Spanish but have seen colorism in Mexican shows where the dumb comedic character is the one with a very indigenous look and a sing songy accent, the light skinned are the heroes. It's that obvious.
Well everything depends on where you live. In Europe people who speak a language with a Latin origin are latinos/Latinas. (Spaniards(+ every other country that speaks Spanish)Italians, French(+ every country that speaks French,Portuguese (+ Brazil), Romanians, etc ) In North and South America we refer to people from Latin America as Latino/Latina. Sometimes Brazilians are excluded and there are people who think French speaking countries like Haiti should be included.
The girls from Spain are Europeans, neither Hispanic or Latino, languages are. The tropes confusing languages with race or ethnicity are all made in the USA.
It’s not just women of color, but also non-American white people. Being a Slavic girl myself, even thou we’re technically white, in the media I’ve never seen a Slavic women in a role where she isn’t a prost*tute or a stone cold b*tch that will do anything for money and has no morals whatsoever. That is very insulting. And growing up I never understood why they portrayed us like that, when it couldn’t be further away from the strong and compassionate Slavic women in my life. And don’t get me started on the Slavic = Russian issue, lol.
I know we are not women of colour, but even us Italian women suffer similar stereotypes: hypersexual, volatile, always angry and spoiled, stubborn, always screaming for some reason, talking broken English with a super thick accent. Especially when I worked in America, men were like "Reeeeeeally, you're Italian uh?" as if I was supposed to jump in bed with them. UGH. Why do Americans see everybody through what they're portrayed like on the screen?
Also, latinas come in many shapes, sizes, colors and facial features. The stereotypical latina and latino that is portrayed in media are usually darker european types, but completely misses the fact that there are lighter european latinas, indigenous/native latinas, black latinas, and east/southeast asian latinas. and, latinos and latinas can be a mix of some of those or all of those!
True! All the latinas in media have an european-ish face.. they all forget about the real faces of most of the population... mostly indigenous people or with indigenous roots, I've never seen a face like mine in media besides maybe Yalitza Aparicio with a more real look of a real latina (in specific Mexican)
one time a guy I was seeing got mad at me because I DIDNT start screaming and throwing plates at him when I saw he was texting some other girl. have in mind it was our third date too. he told me "isn't that how you show you care?" I told him to leave my apartment, hope that was spicy enough for him.
As a latina, I never thought to much about this. I started noticing it when this guy I just started seeing called me "latina" when we were having sex and I straight up told him not to say that cause it made me uncomfortable. Ever since then I've tried to pinpoint why it made me uncomfortable and I never really understood why until y'all put it into words. Thank you for showing me this perspective, I really appreciate it
Something I hate so much about this stereotype is that is so specific, as a latina, you should know how to dance, and flirt, you have to be loud and your skin has to be tan. But there is more, starting for the fact that latinas are from diferent countries (not just Mexico), we are smart, sensitive, some of us are shy, we're not always screaming, and our lenguages are beautiful, (spanish and portuguese ).
me, an intense but quite social akwkard and introverted latina : finally something i do have a say on. I live in mexico so i can't speak for all other countries, and i can say while there are agressive and loud women and girls out there, it really depends of the person and how they were raised. I´m glad tv is playing more with the stereotype , in brooklyn 99 Amy does have quite a temper but is not sexualized and ,sad as it sounds, it was the first time i actualy kinda related with a latinx character and to put this in context: i started whatching B99 in 2017 and i´m 23 ,thats 20 years without seeing another latina and say "i can relate to that" since all them were too sexual , don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with sexy women but when sexual desire pretty much shapes a character ´s identidy is kind of frustrating. Edit: you pronunce "Moreno" really well ,most english speakers can't say the soft "r"
It’s crazy that the spicy Latina archetype has similar quality’s to the “angry black woman” or “Jazabel”, but because of her proximity to whiteness she is desired and gawked over. Latinx characters are seen as different enough from white people to be exotic but close enough to whiteness where we can be loved and accepted smh Edit : I also wanted to add that the above mentioned phenomena has to do with the whole archetype that Latinos are Eurocentric, tanned, dark haired mysterious people with amazing bodies aka curvy or masculine. It further perpetuates their whole complex of Latinos being desired by non Latino white people, more specifically white Americans.
Please do a trope on bullied characters ending up a destructive such as Joker (Arthur Fleck), Stephen King's Carrie, and Vanya on The Umbrella Academy S1. PS. Idk if there's the right name for this trope.

Orange is the New Black also has a variety of Latina characters that most of them avert the stereotype. Like the nerdy anime loving Dia, team mom Gloria, Emo styled Flaca. Euphoria's Kat loves fanfiction, is overweight, good at school, cool headed and not the stereotypical olive skinned Latina.

Not trying is kind of insulting, We get that some sounds are hard to pull off, like the hard long "R" and the Emphasis and it's sometimes weird rules. But if you guys try Is more than OK. The narrator has some knowledge of how it goes, but it's hard to get it right when English is your native language. We also struggle to get some English pronunciation right, so we are in this thing together.
true but it's different when you show a series with very different characters inside of it (all latin), than showing a tv show with all white characters and just one volatile latin. it not only gives the latin stereotype more focus, but it also forces her to play a singular role when multiple latins are playing different roles in a telenovela.
Yeah, but since all characters are latinos in there, you have the shy cute innocent FL and the spicy loud villian, while in USA you only have the loud spicy latina being the only latino character in there.
That's not fair at all. I'm not defending telenovelas, they're bad on other levels, but to say that telenovelas cultivate the spicy latina role is wrong. That's like saying that tv in India cultivates bollywood tropes in the US. Obviously telenovelas have outgoing and emotional characters, why wouldn't they? It's not a stereotype because these characters aren't there for the pleasure of white people to see them as "exotic", they are there to further the plot and are written as people and not caricatures.
Oh my God, finally! Thank you! Been waiting for this! Latin women are more than what media portrays. They’re capable of many things beyond seducing men and are more intelligent, creative, and funny than how they’re shown in television and movies. And special kudos to those who are multilingual! It’s hard to speak one language, let alone another!
A lot of my mom’s Latina friends married white men, including my mom. Some men, like my dad, embraced the Latin culture while others didn’t want to have anything to do with it. They just wanted their wife transported to their American lives. I bet the phrase, “she’s one of the good ones,” even crossed their minds. 🙄
my mom married a white man who wanted nothing to do with the Latin culture so I never grew up knowing about my heritage, let alone the language. It really is sad that some people don't take the time to learn about their partner's culture.

The reason why there are so many Russian baddies in Hollywood movies is because of the Cold War, which established the Muscovite accent (or rather a very bad imitation of a Muscovite accent) as inherently terrifying. The funny thing is that most Russians I have met don't have that accent!
@@jared1964 Doesn’t mean we should be stereotyping an entire nationality of people, though. I’m surprised Jane the Virgin wasn’t included in this. I would say she’s a very modern complex picture of a Latina woman that I related to a lot. Great video however! Appreciate the analysis.
When I moved to the US, and American men would describe me to myself as “spicy”, I had no idea why the heck was I being compared to food. I never got it, I never liked it. Now that I understand the origin, it makes even less sense because I was shy and quiet. That’s how pervasive a label is, that it overrides who the person truly is. Labels are toxic. They deny identity, personality, devalue and diminish who someone actually is, beyond the way they look. Like I hate with a passion being called Spanish by Americans. It’s so disrespectful. Grab a map and learn where Spain is.
Ugh, I remember my past "boyfriends" (they were really looking for something casual and led me on) would fetishize me for being Latina and expect me to be spicy when really I am introverted, cerebral and softhearted who's only "spicy" when people disrespect me and expect things out of me that I can't or don't want to give
This is why I love Atlantis: The Lost Empire; I think Audrey Ramirez gets clocked as a Spicy Latina, but I don't see it (she's not sexualized because A. she's a mechanic, and B. she's 18 and the "baby" of the crew). She's a bit outspoken and brash (not overly volatile), but she's still got some depth. That movie is tragically underrated.
It's hard being an introverted Latina. Non-Latinos sometimes look at me like I'm gonna put on a show when I'm mad.

AAHHH SAME!!
as a "sexy latina" one of the shittiest things about this stereotype is how it creates an excuse for sexual harrassment and sexual assault. it also reduces our emotions: it's like when we're mad about something our points aren't fully conveyed bc people won't take them seriously. one is usually called "sassy" and that's about it, we're not really heard.
facts
I have tons of gorgeous friends and it's never as bad when I'm with them!"
And I explained, "it isn't about HOW HOT we are.
I completely agree. I’ve read some of the comments and even in this section people generalise and mostly say „Mexican“
(And I agree with you, just adding).
"It is all about containing her. She is to be tamed by an alpha white man." This gave me chills. Most of the times that movies portray strong women, they end up showing exactly this. Boys end up thinking they want a strong girl, but they truly fantasize about breaking her.
...
It is absolutely horrifying in every way possible this awful fantasy is something protrayed way too normally and it is unacceptable
I think it’s hot but of course feminists will eat me up here

Something curious I noticed about the Latina trope when I was little: only the lighter skinned ones are used for the stereotype. Not the darker-skinned ones or those with African descent.
Edit: I'm Latin American and lived in Latin America for some time which is why I'm quite aware of this.
It's not that curious. "Familiar with extra spice" or "Exotic" has more appeal than "Blatantly Foreign".

Are you sure? Do you really know how Hollywood works?
There's also lots of discourse within the Latino community about colorism in who is accepted & celebrated in the media. So many Latina stars are white-passing or lighter-skinned, as opposed to being indigenous or afro-latina. In a way this underscores the racism present in Latin America. Although, in the US, we sort of view Latinos as a monolithic group, just as in America, there was slavery and colonialism so that those descended from Europeans are typically the most well-off and the most accepted.
You have a beautiful smile sorry if I’m awkward 😞
